1. Because the bridge might collapse anytime or if the water level below the bridge might

2. It will lessen their vulnerability due to the lightning rods that will divert its impact
harmlessly in the ground.
3. It will lessen their vulnerability due to its built-in firewall to prevent the spread of fire in
case it started from your house or the neighbor’s house.
4. They’re vulnerable because when there are strong rains and floods might form and also
there’s a possibility to have a soil erosion.
5. They’re vulnerable due to the active volcano that might have an eruption and can
produce heavy ash fall along with lahar and lava.

What is your OWN understanding of the word VULNERABILITY?

Page #4
My own understanding of the word Vulnerability is that it refers to how easy you are affected
and how fast or slow is your ability to cope up.

Context (Integration to Real Life) (Page#7)
I experienced the school drill whereas we were told instructions on what should we do
whenever an earthquake strikes including what to do when the earth quake is on-going and
where is the safe place to be in.

Values integration: Excellence (Respect what nature can do if hazards

are not understood properly)
Subject Integration: Araling Panlipunan (Kalamidad na hinaharap ng
Pilipinas) Page #8
I would probably panic and run anywhere might cause other people panic too. Also I might be in
a position where it is vulnerable for me to be get hit by debris from above.

Pre-Test for Hazards and Vulnerability

1. Manmade -Marawi Siege
2. Natural – Earthquake in Bohol
3. Manmade - Nuclear accident of Chernobyl
4. Natural – Tsunami impact after an earthquake in japan
5. Manmade- Wildfire in Australia

Which among the hazards have you experienced? Give a brief

description of your experience. (Page #9)

Natural Hazard- Super Typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan. It was very dreadful because the impact from
this disaster caused so many deaths and destruction of tangible materials.

Manmade Hazard- Oil spill in our road because of a truck that was in an accident. It gave off a
very foul odor and caused fear to the people in the neighborhood that it might inflict a fire
within the community.

Give 3 examples of hazard in your locality and site vulnerabilities in
each hazard. (Page #10)
Flash Floods- People who are living in low area above water level might be submerged in to
floods.
Typhoon- Houses that are made out of light materials might be destroyed due to the strong
wind.
Earthquake- Houses that are not built to be sturdy enough to withstand the impact of an
earthquake might be destroyed.

How can profiling hazard help your community in preparing for that
hazard? Share your thoughts. (Page #11)

It can help our community by looking to the previous hazard that happened and plan out the
things to do when a certain hazard will arrive.

Give the negative and beneficial impacts of an earthquake. Write your

answers below. (Page #12)

Negative- There will be many casualties and the function inside and outside of the community
will be disrupted.

Beneficial- People in the community will have the initiative to help each other or called as
“bayanihan” to cope up with the earthquake.

Practice

Vulnerability and Hazards

The illustration above are related because if you’re living near the seashore, you’re vulnerable
to storm surges and flash floods.

Values Integration: Excellence (Resilience)

Subject Integration: Araling Panlipunan (Kultura ng mga Hapon)
(Page#13)

I’m really impressed by how resilient Japan is and it managed to support over 30 countries
including the Philippines. Their practice of discipline, responsibility and accountability pays off
because the results of these actions are seen by most people in the world.

1. The characteristics I have seen in our community during a disaster are being responsible
and disciplined. Whenever a disaster comes, they are ready to patrol around the vicinity
to check if there are people who needs immediate help or got stranded while following
safety procedures.
2. These characteristics contribute to the immediate response of our community by
increasing the trust of the people to them that they can do their jobs appropriately.

Identify all the possible elements exposed to the volcanic eruption of

Taal Volcano in Batangas. (Page #18)

All of the elements has the possibility to be exposed to the eruption of the Taal Volcano in
Batangas because an eruption of a volcano whether it’s inactive or active can cause a
widespread impact in every aspect of living of the people.

Share your thoughts about the diagram from the previous page. (Page
#20)

Disasters are inevitable because hazards are always present around us, and if we are not
prepared enough to know our vulnerabilities and exposure to the hazards, we might not be able
to mitigate and avoid disaster risk.
