Center of gravity -

We know each body is made up of small particles and each particle experience force due to gravity called weight.
And these forces (on individual particles ) are parallel and can be replace by a single resultant force called weight
of the body,
And point along which the resultant weight acts called center of gravity.

Also the sum of moments about center of gravity ‘G’ is zero.

w w Anti clock wise moments = Clock wise moment
ww W Thus center of gravity is

1. Point along which weight of body acts.

2. The point about which sum of moments is zero.

For the regular bodies the center of gravity is same as geometrical center
How to find centre ofgravity for irregular bodies

1. Suspending plumb line.

Draw lines from each vertex along the plumb line .
After drawing the lines the intersection point of these lines will be the centre of
the gravity.

2. By balancing an object –
Thus if we balance any object at center of gravity, it remain stationary .

Mass M1 and M2 are balance at their COG.

M1
M2

Now if we consider together…………………..

M1
M2

o
d1 d2
Now if they’re in balance at o. M1 d1 = M2 d2
Some interesting facts related to center of gravity .

• If the CG of the object is above the area of support, the object will remain upright.
• If the CG is outside the area of support the object will topple

There is a very famous building, balance on this principle…………………………
