ASSIGNMENT 5 – MODULE 5

Assignment #CMT-5: PARTS AND ACTIONS Of The UNIVERSAL TESTING MACHINE

1. Select from choices in the box the parts involved when preforming the following tests:
a. Tensile - Lower Grip, Upper Crosshead, Screw
b. Compression – Lower Crosshead, Control System, Compression Plate
c. Bending - Upper Grip, Working Table, Control System

Upper Crosshead Lower Crosshead

Upper Grip Compression Plate

Screw Working Table

Lower Grip Grip Control System

2. Assuming the computer nd the printer are turned on, what will be the next step to do when trying
to perform test?
After the computer and printer are turned on, next step to do for performing a test is to load the
specimen in the machine to which the computer is connected and the initial readings are fed in the
computer software through which the test is performed.

3. What part of the UTM will you use to remove the tensile test specimen rom the grips?
The part of the UTM will you use to remove the tensile test specimen from the grips is UPPER
CROSSHEAD; it is used to hold the tensile testing specimen in place as per the requirement. This
cross head consists of jaws to hold one end of the tensile specimen at its center and the other end
is held by middle crosshead. Upper Crosshead is always fixed in its position but moves along the
lower crosshead because of the hydraulic push from the bottom.

4. what direction does the lower Crosshead move during a tensile test?
Lower crosshead is not used to conduct the tensile test specimen but it moves in the upper
direction when tensile test is conducted. The upper and lower crossheads always move together in
upward direction while conducting any test.

5. In what direction does the lower Crosshead move during a compression test?
A compressive load is applied to the specimen by a platen that is attached to the load cell. The
crosshead will travel upward while the platen and load cell remain stationary. Then Lower cross
head moves in the upper direction when compressive test is conducted.

6. what direction does the lower Crosshead move during a bending test?
Lower cross head moves in the upper direction when bending test is conducted.
