INTRODUCTION
Voltage regulator is a device intended to keep the voltage
constant automatically. Negative feedback or a straightforward
feed-forward architecture can be used in a voltage regulator.
It might make use of electronic parts or an electromechanical
mechanism. It may be used to control one or more AC or DC
voltages depending on the design. They are used to maintain
the DC voltages utilized by the processor and other
components in devices like computer power supplies. Voltage
regulators manage the plant's output in central power plant
generators and automotive alternators. Zener Diode acts like
a voltage regulator that helps in regulating the voltage across
small loads. The Zener Effect, which governs how the diodes
function, Since the p-n junction is strongly doped, it becomes
constrained and develops a strong electric field. When reverse
biased, this powerful electric field produces ionization, a
process in which electrons are drawn out of their valence
orbits and made free to circulate which in turn keeps the
voltage and the current constant. However, if the voltage
exceeds a certain limit, known as the breakdown or Zener
voltage, this forward current flowing can be reverted.

QUESTION AND ANSWER

1. By observing the zener voltage regulator network from your experiment

what do you think the value of reverse breakdown voltage (Vz) of Zener Diode
"1N4370A" ?and ZPD7.5 ?

By observing the zener voltage regulator network from your experiment what do
you think the value of reverse breakdown voltage (Vz) of Zener Diode "1N4370A" ?
and ZPD7.5 ?
After observing the Zener voltage regulator network in the experiment, the value of
the reverse breakdown voltage (Vz) of Zener Diode “1N4370A” is 2.3V-2.4V in the
table of our data. Then the Reverse breakdown voltage of Zener Diode “ZPD7.5” is
7.50-7.593V based on the different voltage limits tested.

2. After removing Rs from the circuit what will be the

value of load voltage(VL) if Zener breakdown voltage(Vz)
is greater than input voltage(Vi) ?

After removing Rs from the circuit there

was no more voltage flowing through our
Zener Breakdown voltage. Meaning that
the voltage limit of the whole circuit is
decreased by a lot and without the
Resistor, the voltage of Vz at 1V of Vi is 0V
and at 100V of Vi, Vz is 0V. Observing this
we can say that without a connection or a
resistor in the circuit before reaching the
Zener diode there will be zero effectivity
of the Zener diode in turn rendering it
useless.
QUESTION AND ANSWER

3. List the applications of the Zener diode.

Zener diodes are used for regulating the voltage, referencing elements, Surge
suppressors, switching applications and clipper circuits. When the load voltage
equals the breakdown voltage, the series resistors limit the current flowing
through the diode when there is an excess of voltage when the diode is
conducting. While doing so, the diode produces noise, which may be reduced by
connecting a large decoupling capacitor across the diode. Clipper circuits offer
overvoltage protection, it is used in power supplies for limiting the voltage.
Zener diodes are also used to shift the voltage in a circuit limiting it preventing it
from overvoltage.

4. Using the Zener Voltage Regulator network, what do

you think will happen to the load voltage(VL) when you
flip the zener diode vertically from the circuit?

After flipping the Zener diode vertically there is

less load voltage compared to when it was not
flipped. At 1V the voltage at Vz is 0.717V when
not flipped and when flipped vertically it dropped
to 0.67V. We also noticed that there was also
current flowing through the Zener diode itself
after flipping which is Iz.
DISCUSSION

The first thing we did was to setup the Multisim

then created a design then we start the simulation.
We inserted a resistor with a value of 1500 Ω after
first adding a direct current voltage power supply.
The resistor serves as a passive two-terminal
electrical components to implement electrical
resistance. It lowers voltage levels and reduces
current flow within circuits. Also, we insert a Zener
diode (1N4370A) and the second diode (ZPD7.5),
completing the circuit with a 3800 Ω resistor that
lines up with the negative side of the diode, before
inserting ground and returning to the power source.
Then we inserted an AC voltage ranging between
0.5V to 100V into the Zener diode regulator. When
there is no input connected, a ground keeps the
input from floating. Then we measure the asked
values and analyzed what will happen if we
configure and change some values. The simulation
was successful, and we came up with multiple data.
