What is Climate?
The climate describes the average
weather conditions for a certain
place over a lengthy period
(minimum 30 years).
Maritime climates, cold-dry desert
climates, and tropical climates are
only a few examples.
Climate classification maps around
the world show the wide range of
climates.
The climate is made up of various
elements and variables.

What is Weather?
The present meteorological
components, such as temperature,
wind direction and speed, amount
and kind of precipitation, sunshine
hours, and so on, make up
weather.
The weather defines a brief time
period ranging from a few hours to
several days.

What is Climate
Change?
A noticeable change in the climate
of the entire Earth that lasts for a
long time (decades or longer). It's
commonly referred to as global
climate variability when it's caused
by natural causes.
Usually refers to changes in the
atmosphere caused by human
activity.

What causes Earth’s
climate to change?
• Changes in the atmosphere
• Natural processes
• Volcanoes
• Tectonic plate movement
• Changes in the sun
• Shifts in Earth’s orbit
• Human activities – any activity
that releases “greenhouse
gases” into the atmosphere

What's going to happen now?
» Warming and sea level rise will continue, most
likely at a faster rate than we've witnessed so far.
» Even if greenhouse gas emissions are stabilized,
this is likely to continue for centuries.
» Some consequences may last a lifetime.
» Coral systems and other unique ecosystems
cannot handle higher temperatures well
» Wildfires will increase
» Up to 30% of species will be at increased risk for
extinction due to the rapid changes in their
ecosystems
