2018 - 19 Semester I
Question 1
The per phase impedance of a short three phase transmission line is 0.5 < 53.15°Ω. The
three phase load at the receiving end is 900𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘 at 0.8 power factor lagging. If the line to
line sending end voltage is 3.3𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘, determine
a) the receiving end line to line voltage in 𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘
b) the line current

Solution 1
900
𝑍𝑍𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙 = 0.5 < 53.15°Ω = (0.3 + 𝑗𝑗0.4)Ω. Receiving end per phase power is 𝑆𝑆𝛷𝛷 = 3×0.8 (0.8 +
3.3
𝑗𝑗0.6) = (300 + 𝑗𝑗225)𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀. The per phase sending end voltage magnitude is |𝑉𝑉𝑠𝑠 | = 𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘 =
√3
1905.256𝑉𝑉. Let the receiving end per phase voltage be 𝑉𝑉𝑅𝑅 = |𝑉𝑉𝑅𝑅 | < 0𝑉𝑉 and 𝑉𝑉𝑠𝑠 = |𝑉𝑉𝑠𝑠 | < 𝜃𝜃𝑉𝑉
where 𝜃𝜃 is unknown. The receiving end per phase current is thus
𝑆𝑆𝛷𝛷∗ (300 − 𝑗𝑗225) × 103
𝐼𝐼𝑅𝑅 = ∗ = 𝐴𝐴
𝑉𝑉𝑅𝑅 |𝑉𝑉𝑅𝑅 |
The relationship between voltages and current is
(300 − 𝑗𝑗225) × 103 × (0.3 + 𝑗𝑗0.4)
𝑉𝑉𝑆𝑆 = 𝑉𝑉𝑅𝑅 + 𝐼𝐼𝑅𝑅 𝑍𝑍𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙 ⇒ 1905.256 < 𝜃𝜃 = |𝑉𝑉𝑅𝑅 | +
|𝑉𝑉𝑅𝑅 |
From above, |𝑉𝑉𝑅𝑅 | = 1805.329𝑉𝑉 or |𝑉𝑉𝑅𝑅 | = 103.859𝑉𝑉. Second value of |𝑉𝑉𝑅𝑅 | yields a very high
value of |𝐼𝐼𝑅𝑅 | which is impractical. Hence, |𝑉𝑉𝑅𝑅 | = 1805.329𝑉𝑉. This gives 𝜃𝜃 = 15.386°. Thus,
a) receiving end line to line voltage is 𝑉𝑉𝑅𝑅,𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙 = 3.127𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘
b) the line current is 𝐼𝐼𝑅𝑅 = 207.718 < −36.869°𝐴𝐴

90% power factor lagging. Find the voltage at the sending end by long line model.

line inductance of 0.97𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚/𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘 per phase and line capacitance of 0.0115𝜇𝜇𝜇𝜇/𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘 per phase.
a) Determine the phase constant 𝛽𝛽, surge impedance 𝑍𝑍𝑐𝑐 , velocity of propagation 𝑣𝑣 and
line wavelength 𝜆𝜆.
b) The receiving end rated load is 800𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀, 0.8 power factor lagging at 500𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘.

c) Calculate the receiving end voltage when the line is terminated in an open circuit
and is energized with 500𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘 at the sending end.
d) Determine the reactance and three phase rating of shunt reactor/ capacitor to be
installed at the receiving end to keep the no load receiving end voltage same at the
rated sending end voltage.

(d)

A 60𝐻𝐻𝐻𝐻 three phase transmission line is 250𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 long. The voltage at the sending end is
220𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘. The parameters of the line are 𝑅𝑅 = 0.2Ω/𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚, 𝑋𝑋 = 0.8Ω/𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 and 𝑌𝑌 =
5.3𝜇𝜇𝜇𝜇/𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚. Find the sending end current when there is no load on the line.
