category and number from the jeopardy screen and learn about different identifications
and characteristics of rock.

Activity
The students will be playing a jeopardy game to assess their
level of understanding when it comes to characteristics of
rocks (cleavage, streak, luster, hardness, color, and fracture)
and identification of rocks (igneous, sedimentary, and
metamorphic).

The students would have prior knowledge of how to identify

rocks and minerals as well as what each of the characteristics
mean and how to describe them.

Before the game starts, the teacher will explain what the game
is and how to play, for any of the students who have not
played, and or not familiar with, jeopardy. The rules will then
be explained (only whispers between group members during
the “discussion period” is aloud and no outbursts or
distractions when a representative is up at the board. All
Pedagogy

students must play fairly and nicely if the game is going to be

played). After the students are made aware of the rules, and
what is expected from them, then the game can begin.
The class will be split into two teams and occupy their
respective sides of the room. With each turn, a representative
from the group will walk up to the white board and choose a
category and number. They will then report back to their group
and after 30 seconds of discussion will stand up and give the
groups answer. If the answer is correct, they receive the
points. If it is not correct the question goes to the other group,
and they have an opportunity to “steal” the question. If the
other team gets the question right, they “steal” the other
teams’ points and can send their representative to the board
to choose another category and number. If the other team gets
it wrong, then the teacher will discuss the correct answer with
the class and no team will get the points.

The teacher will also be taking note of what areas students

have the most trouble with and will make sure to reinforce it in
the next lesson.
