5.8 The student will investigate and understand that
Earth constantly changes. Key ideas include
a) Earth’s internal energy causes movement of
material within the Earth;
b) plate tectonics describe movement of the crust;
c) the rock cycle models the transformation of rocks;

In this interactive white board activity, the children will touch the board to play Jeopardy
Pedagogy Planning

in teams and learn about characteristics and facts about rocks and minerals.
Activity This activity would take place after the material on rocks and
minerals had been covered. I would conduct this review game
at the end of the science lesson a day or two before a test.
1. After completing the lesson for the day, students will
be divided by the teacher into two teams using the 1, 2
method to split the students up (count 1 or 2 for every
student going around the room)
2. 1s will go to one side of the room and 2s on the other
so they can congregate and discuss the questions with
each other easier.
3. First, the teacher will explain the game to the students.
(In this version of Jeopardy, the team choosing the
category and amount will get the first chance to guess
the correct answer. Each team will select a new person
each round to go up to the board to select and answer
the question. If they do not get it right, then the other
team has the chance to steal and guess their own
answer. If that team gets the answer wrong, then it
will go back and forth until someone gets the answer
right or if everyone is stuck the teacher can help guide
the students to the right answer.)
4. To begin, the teacher will flip a coin to see which team
gets to go first.
5. Whichever team goes first picks the category and
amount they wish to start with. As explained above, it
will start with the first team and move to the second
after each correct answer is stated.
6. The individual student should go up to the board and
use two fingers to pick their selection.
7. Once the question comes up, the student has 1 minute
to figure out the correct answer. They can use only
their teammates for help while the teacher reads out
the question and times the student, asking for an
answer when a minute has gone by.
8. The teacher should go over each question and answer
as they come up within the game, explaining why the
answer is right or wrong or asking students why they
chose their respective answer.
9. The teacher will act as the mediator and read the
questions to the respective team and individual up at
the board. They can guide the student if they are really
struggling but each person has their team to help them
so that should be the last resort if it is clear both teams
are struggling.
10. After all the questions have been answered, the
teacher can decide to give a difficult “Final Jeopardy”
question if they choose, but this is optional and
separate from the given game.
11. There is no actual prize except the simple competition,

(Even though this says 3rd grade on the website, it fits well with
the VA 5th grade curriculum and would be a good review game)
