Partition/Fair

Share Strategy
Ally Williams
What is the Partition/Fair Share strategy?
- Partition means splitting a number apart into separate parts

- This strategy is used for division problems where a set number is to be shared evenly among

another given number

- Partitioning is commonly used with addition and subtraction, but breaking up the numbers helps

students then divide them evenly

- Specifically, it is used most often in division word problems to provide a visual to students when

they begin tackling more lengthy problems

Here’s a video of the
strategy in action!
- Students are less likely to guess or work too
quickly (careless mistakes)
What will this - It eliminates the fear of not knowing how to
approach a problem
method help - They can break bigger numbers up into smaller,
more manageable ones
improve? - They can use a visual to check their work and
explain their thinking
4.4 d) create and solve single-step and multistep
practical problems involving addition, subtraction, and
multiplication, and single step practical problems
involving division with whole numbers.
