1.1) What are two advantages of using CMC in your everyday life?

(a) In terms of communication Computer-mediated communication (CMC) provides

easier, faster, and more effective communication. During this time of the pandemic, the
CMC gives benefits to all people especially the students since people are prohibited to
go outside. Communication between teachers and students is an excellent example.
Students would be thousands of kilometers distant from their professors during the
lockdown. However, if the need arises, students can readily contact their instructors via
email or, more simply, Facebook.

For the same reason, many professors are using Facebook to interact with their students.
In this case, CMC has no time or place restrictions when compared to face-to-face
communication. This implies that communication can take place at any time and from any
location. It is not necessary for two communicating persons to be accessible at the same
moment in order to communicate. They don't even have to be in the same spot. And I
think that this is one of the advantages of CMC in our daily lives.

(b) In comparison to face-to-face communication, CMC allows users to reach out to a

large number of recipients at the same time. This is very beneficial when informing a big
number of individuals about the same thing. For instance, if the professor wants to make
an announcement, it is preferable to use Facebook rather than word of mouth. It can
reach a big number of students at the same time.
1.2) What are two disadvantages of using CMC in our everyday life?

(a) We are all aware that communication is more than just text and words. It is vital to
express emotions when transmitting messages to others so that others may easily
understand what we are saying. I believe that Computer-mediated communication (CMC)
is associated with a lack of socio-emotional and nonverbal cues. For example, one person
may crack a joke, while another person on the opposite side may interpret it as
fact. Therefore, miscommunications may occur as a result of incorrect interpretations of
the tone and meaning of words.

(b) The cost of communication is another disadvantage. Communication through

computers, phones, tablets, and other devices is costly due to the multiple cost involved.
Electricity, phone and data charges, and computer system maintenance fees are among
the expenses. When these gadgets are connected in, they consume a lot of electricity,
which must be paid for through bills. To make calls or send messages, phone users must
pay loads, airtime, or call minutes.

1.3) What are two good things or positive changes you experienced with yourself
since the time you began using CMC?

(a) My life has become much easier since I began using CMC. I was able to communicate
with my family in other countries at any time. It also helps me accomplish my school tasks
because sometimes I forget the instructions of my professor regarding the assignment. I
often used Facebook Messenger to re-ask my professor or classmates and in this way, I
was able to finish my homework on time.

(b) I thought I would not be unable to continue my studies because face-to-face classes
are prohibited due to the pandemic. I am thankful for the technology because of its
positive impact on everyone’s life. I was able to continue my studies by taking online
classes using a personal computer. Teachers may easily engage with students and have
a productive discussion about the topic. This positive change in my life as a student allows
me to continue my education in college.

4) What two difficulties or problems do you encounter yourself as a user of CMC?

(a) I know that many people have experienced poor internet connections. And this is one
of the problems that I encounter as a user of CMC. Because my internet connection is
not always consistent, I am unable to understand what my relatives in other countries are
saying. As a result, the important message I want to convey to the person I'm speaking
with is compromised. My internet connection was also lost several times during the class.
Every time I run into this problem, I instantly send a message to our group chat on
Facebook using free data and notify them about it.

(b) Another issue I run into is unexpected brownouts. Because the personal computer is
powered by electricity, I am unable to participate in my online class if there is a sudden
brownout. The modem or router is powered up too, which means I won't be able to
connect to the internet.

5) Based on your own experiences or on what you have heard from others, what is
one detrimental or harmful use of CMC, and what is one wholesome or beneficial
use of CMC?

(1.a) unhealthy or harmful use of CMC – Computer-mediated communication has the

ability to influence social, mental, and emotional health, as well as physical health. People
are less active today where everyone has a cell phone and a computer. I feel technology
discourages us from getting out and exercising, which is not healthy, especially for kids,
because it can create a variety of illnesses if students are always in front of a computer.
Students' social skills are also affected because there is no face-to-face interaction
involved.
(1.b) healthy or helpful use of CMC – I feel that one of the most beneficial uses of
computer-mediated communication, particularly during a pandemic, is the ability to
communicate with friends and family members who are separated due to quarantine.
CMC allows people to spend time together without being in the same room and risking
infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. In fact, CMC was found to
have a good influence on people's well-being during contact limitations, and spending
time with family through media was connected with less depression.
