NAME OF THE EQUIPMENT: TRANSFORMER

APPLICATION

1. Transformer is an electrical device that has both input and output. Usually, transformer
used to transfer electrical energy from an alternating voltage supply applied to the input
of an electrical load and connected to the output by changing the value of the voltage or
current.
2. There are two types of transformers:
I. Stepped up transformer
A type of transformer that creates a higher output voltage compared to the input
voltage.

II. Stepped down transformer

Another type of transformer that creates a lower output voltage compared to the
input voltage.
3. Transformer is also used to match impedance of one device with other connected devices.
4. Other than that, it’s also used to isolate a certain part of a circuit.
WORKING PRINCIPLE:

1. Alternating voltage is applied to the primary coil so that the primary

coil can produced alternating current.
2. A magnetic field is produced in the primary core because the current
is flowing through the primary coil. The magnetic field lines travel around
the iron core in closed loops hence magnetically linking the secondary coil
to the primary coil.
3. The magnetic flux that passes through the primary coil changes with
time due to the changes of the current with time. According to the Faraday’s
Law of electromagnetic induction, the magnetic flux that changes with time
will produce a self-induced emf across the primary coil. According to Lenz’s
law, the induced emf opposes the applied voltage.
4. The time varying magnetic flux, which is produced by the current in
the primary coil, flows through the secondary coil. The secondary coil will
also have the mutual induction in the secondary coil. Hence, it’ll produced a
mutually-induced emf through the secondary coil.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

There are a lot of advantage when we’re using

The transformer also has some disadvantages,
the transformer:
such as:
• Transformer can control and stabilize
• Since the core of the transformer is made
the voltage transmission.
of iron, hence there is wastage when the
• Transformer is easy to use because we current flow.
don’t have to wait when we want to use • It gives out lot of heat which requires
transformer. cooling. This creates a break in the flow
of the current.
• Besides, it is highly efficient because
transformer doesn’t require high capital
investment and has low maintenance cost.

CONCLUSION:

As we know, transformer is a device that help us a lot in our daily

life. Transformer does bring a lot of advantages for us. I hope
that in the future we can modify the transformer in order to make
the transformer more efficient and provide more electricity to the
rural areas in our country.
