I. Introduction (Day 1)

What’s New?
FESTIVAL DANCE-cultural dance performed to the strong beats of percussion instruments by a community of people sharing
the same culture usually done in honor of a Patron Saint or in thanksgiving of a bountiful harvest. Festival dances draw
people’s culture by portraying the people’s way of life through movements, costumes and implements inherent to their place
of origin.
NATURE OF FESTIVAL DANCES
•Festival dances may be: Religious Secular or Non- Religious
Religious Festivals
The Ati-Atihan Festival is a feast held in honor of the Santo Niño held annually in January
concluding on third Sunday, in the town of Kalibo, Aklan in the Philippines. Celebrants
paint their faces with black soot and wear bright, outlandish costumes as they dance in
revelry during the last three days of these two week-long festivals.

Sinulog Festival. The festival honors the child Jesus, known as the Santo Niño (Holy Child),
patron of the city of Cebu. It is a dance ritual that commemorates the Cebuano
people’s pagan origin, and their acceptance of Christianity. The festival features a street
parade with participants in bright-colored costumes dancing to the rhythm of drums,
trumpets, and native gongs.

Moriones Festival. The Moriones is an annual festival held on Holy Week on the island of
Marinduque. The “Moriones” are men and women in costumes and masks replicating the
garb of biblical Roman soldiers as interpreted by local folks – Morion means “mask” or “visor,”
a part of the medieval Roman armor which covers the face.

Non -Religious Festivals

Kadayawan Festival, The Kadayawan Festival is an annual festival of Third week of August in the city of Davao in the
Philippines. Its name derives from the friendly greeting “Madayaw”, from the Dabawenyo word “dayaw”, meaning good,
and valuable, superior or beautiful. The festival is a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of
culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living.

TheSublian Festival started by the city Mayor Eduardo Dimacuha on July 23, 1988
on the annual observation of the city hood of Batangas City. Subli is presented
during a feast, as ceremonial worship dance in honor to the Holy Cross. The
image of the Holy Cross was found during the Spanish rule in the town of
Alitagtag. It is the patron saint of ancient town of Bauan. The dance is
indigenous to the province of Batangas.

The Ibalong Festival is a non-religious festival in Legazpi City, Albay based on the
Ibalong epic held on October 25-31. The festival celebrates the epic story of
Ibalong who was accompanied by three legendary heroes namely Baltog,
Hangyong and Bantong.People parade in the streets wearing masks and
costumes to imitate the appearances of the heroes and the villainsportrayingthe
basic battles that made their way into the history of Bicol. The festival aims to express the warmth and goodwill to the people.
IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
KOMEDYA SARSUELA An art form of lyric theatre drama, comical in nature and it is incorporated with singing, dancing and
dialogue. Originated from Spain and was made popular in the Philippines in the 1800’s. It portrays the typical Filipino realities
and stories in a particular country and social relations which viewers can relate in their lives such as elections and feasts,
marriage and family, vices, and values.

Zarsuela characters and music:

The actors and actresses as they say their lines on the scene, they sing it out. There are solo
parts like solo male or solo female but there are also group parts or the choir. The music with
the lyrics enhances the mood of the story and gives emphasis to each word spoken by the
actors. The musical experience in the Philippine Sarzuela triggers the emotion of the
audience to be able to connect the message of the story. Severino Reyes wrote and
staged the Tagalog sarswela, Walang Sugat (Not wounded) in 1902.

BODABIL is an indigenized form of vaudeville, introduced in the Philippines around the turn of
the 20th century. It featured a hodgepodge of musical numbers, short-form comedy and
dramatic skits, and even magic acts, often staged inside the theaters of Manila. It was
developed because city growers wanted to uplift their emotional stability from the usual stage
acts to a stage presentation featuring comedy, musical, monologue, skits, impersonators,
acrobats, and even magical acts. The entertainers helped to make jazz and blues popular
and admired in our country.

I. Introduction (Time Frame: _DAY 1_)

The Ati-Atihan Festival is known as the wildest of the

Philippine festival. People cheer and shout “Hala Bira!”
and “Viva Santo Niño!” to encourage enthusiasm and
continuous dancing for the duration of the festival. It is a
week-long festival held annually every third week of
January that consists of a tribal dance parade with drum
music, costumes, and indigenous accessories to honor
the Santo Niño or the Holy Child Jesus. People cheer and
shout “Hala Bira!” and “Viva Santo Niño!” to encourage
enthusiasm and continuous dancing for the duration of
the festival.

The Sinulog Festival is an annual cultural and religious

festival held on the third Sunday of January in the city of
Cebu to honor Santo Niño, commemorate the Filipino
rejection of their former religious views, and acceptance
of Christianity. This festival is famous among local and
international tourists for its grand street parade which
imitates the type of dancing done by natives of Cebu
before they were baptized as Christians. The petitioners
often yell “Pit Senior!”. They flock to the festival for prayer
requests and thanksgiving while dancing, believing that
Santo Niño will hear them. Different group of dancers
dressed in colorful attire are accompanied by rhythmic
music of the drums, percussions, trumpets, and native
gongs.

The Sublian Festival is an annual celebration reflecting

Batngueños’ commitment and great love to their town’s
patrons, the Holy Cross of Bauan and Agoncillo, and the
Santo Niño of Batangas City. It was originally religious
ceremony that involves praying, eating, dancing “Subli”,
and singing verses with strict skeletal melody. The religious
commitment was translated to “Subli”, a dance local to
Batangas. Traditionally, the Subli is performed with
chanting and accompanied by drums. Subli come from
two words: (bending your body forward or downward).
Thus, throughout the dance, male dancers are in trunk-
forward-bend position to give the impression of broken
bodies.

Philippine Theater
Komedya comes from the 16th century Spanish comedia (play). It is a play written in verse which uses traditional
methods of the marcha (march) for entrance or exit, Batalia (choreograph fighting) and magia (magical effects). It is one of
the colorful theatrical traditions in the Philippines used by the Spanish as the method to spread Christianity. This theatrical form
describes the conflicts of Christians and Muslims. This theatrical performance spread instantly but was criticized of its lack of
national importance and realism.
IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Two Types of Komedya:

1. Secular Komedya - usually performed in town’s celebration. An example popularized in 1600’s is the “Moro-
Moro” that use stories that revolve around kings, queens, princes, princesses, animals, and supernatural beings.
Most of the time, it portrays the clash between Christians and Muslims. Another example is “Tibag or Arakyo”
during Santacrusan.

2. Religious Komedya - mostly performed to enhance religious festivities. It focuses on the life of religious icons.
Examples are Siete Palabras, Comedia De San Miguel and Senakulo, the Lenten presentation of Passion of Christ.

Sarsuela is an art form of lyric theater

drama, comical in nature and it is
incorporated with singing, dancing,
and dialogue. It is a play in prose.
Sarsuela originated in the Philippines
in the 1800’s. It portrays the typical
Filipino realities stories and social
relations which viewers can relate in
their lives such as elections, marriage
and family, vices, and values.
Walang Sugat is one of the most
famous Sarsuela in the country.

Bodabil is another stage shows that became popular during Japanese period based on the French Vaudeville. It was
developed because city growers wanted to uplift their emotional stability from the usual stage acts to a stage presentation
featuring comedy, musical, monologue, skits, impersonators, acrobats, and even magical acts. Different Bodabil stars are
Bayani Casimiro, Dely Atay-Atayan, Togo and Pugo, Chicahy, Rogelio Dela Rosa, Leopoldo Salcedo, and Katy Dela Cruz.

IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
I. Introduction (Time Frame: __DAY 1__)

Philippine theater comes in a variety of forms, and these includes religious and non-religious acts of production usually
shown or performed during festivals covering a wide spectrum of resources and origins. Most of which are influenced by the
Spanish and other Asian countries. Since the time of Dr. Jose Rizal, national hero, in the year 1898, Shadow Puppetry had
already been formed in the Philippines when he staged the play entitled “Carillo”. Rizal used a carton and a stick and he
positioned this at the back of a large white cloth using a candle to illuminate the back of the puppets to create the shadows.

Shadow Puppetry or Shadow Play is an ancient Art form that uses flat, expressed figures to
produce cut-out figures which are held together by sticks and sometimes threads to create to
create movement which are shown behind a thin layer of cloth or screen and alight source to
create the shadows. Shadow play is popular among various cultures and countries and has a long
history of tradition, but the known origin was from a Chinese Legend that traces Shadow Theater
or puppetry when a court magician comforted a gloomy emperor by “Conjuring up” his departed
wife.

A drama that is performs through dance movements, frequently with dialogue or

sometimes, even singing, dance drama is popular for retelling of famous, national literatures.
Actors act out scenes through a complex gesture language, which imitates actions in real life and
required rhythmic body movements as an expressive public performance. These movements are
often accompanied by other elements, such as dialogue, pamtomime, chants, and costumes.
Though the main focus of the dance drama would be the movements and gestures of the actors,
creating the right setup , props and costumes go a long way, and hust like any theater or drama
performance, visual arts through costumes and settings play a big role in creating the right “feel”
or “ambiance” to deliver the message of the story of the dance drama.

The earliest known form of organized theater is the Comedia or Moro-Moro, created by the
Spanish priests. It is usually performed during festivals or fiestas, and is performed in villages
throughout the Philippines. Each performance for each village differ from one another on how it is
treated through retelling, but all are full of romance, melodrama, and the highlight which is the
battle between the Christians and Muslim. All Moro-Moro plays follow a pattern of a love affair
between a Muslim-Filipino prince and a Christian princess. Moros were portrayed as perpetual
villains who always lost to Christians in the end. It depicts battles, in a rather comedic way,
between Christians and Moros as Muslims in the Philippines prefer to be called.

In the Philippines, the Sarswela or Zarzuela is a play with song and dances usually written in
prose, depicting the peculiarity or romantic love among idealized Filipino characters that are
often accompanied by topics of contemporary social, political, economic or cultural issues for
relevance and added interest. Originating from the Spanish form of musical-theater, the dramatic
action carried through the alternating combination of song and speech, and incorporates vocal
ensembles, various types of folk music and dance. Zarzuelas are usually nationalistic in theme and
plot and are showcased by actors and actresses wearing traditional costumes, our Filipinianas,
Barong Tagalogs and other local wear in the conventional era. Philippines sarswela depicts storied
told in integrated local folklore, projected by the actor characteristics in costumes, and traditional
Filipino inspired props. Some of these props are made out of materials made from local resources
such as capiz and rattan.

During the season of Lent, one of the most famous events that are shown is the theater play of Senakulo, usually
depicting stories and events from the Old and New Testaments related to the life, sufferings and death of Jesus Christ. It takes
IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
at least eight days to be performed, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, in different places: on the
street, on the stage, in a chapel or church. Traditionally, it is acted out on a proscenium-type stage,
with painted cloths or paper backdrops, called telon. Locals act as soldiers, with menacing painted
masksand armors, and act out scenes even outdoors. Making the costumes and props take a lot of
thought and effort, to be able to represent the characters well, and that also includes creating the
stage, when performed indoors, and what backdrops to use for which scenario. All in all, the creation
of costumes, props and setting come together to support the creation of the whole production.

Physical Fitness

Physical fitness is a state of health and well-being and, more specifically, the ability to perform aspects of sports,
occupations and daily activities. Physical fitness is generally achieved through proper nutrition, moderate-vigorous physical
exercise, and sufficient rest. Physical strength is the measure of a human's exertion of force on physical objects. Increasing
physical strength is the goal of strength training. Weakness is a lack of physical or muscle strength and the feeling that extra
effort is required to move your arms, legs, or other muscles.

Festival Dance

A festival is an event ordinarily celebrated by a community and centering on some characteristic aspect of that
community and its religion or cultures. It is often marked as a local or national holiday. Festival dances are cultural dances
performed to the strong beats of percussion instruments by a community of people sharing the same culture usually done in
honor of a Patron saint or as a thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest. Festival dances may be religious or secular in nature.

The majority of festivals in the Philippines, locally known as "fiestas", may have their own peryas (trade fairs with
temporary amusement parks). The origin of most early fiestas are rooted in Christianity, dating back to the Spanish colonial
period when the many communities (such as barrios and towns) of the predominantly Catholic Philippines almost always had
a patron saint assigned to each of them. Originally encouraged by the Spanish to coincide with Christian holy days, early
patronal festivals became vital instruments in spreading Christianity throughout the country.

Festivals in the Philippines can be religious, cultural, or both. Several of these are held to honor the local Roman
Catholic patron saint, to commemorate local history and culture, to promote the community's products, or to celebrate a
bountiful harvest. They can be marked by Holy Masses, processions, parades, theatrical play and reenactments, religious or
cultural rituals, trade fairs, exhibits, concerts, pageants and various games and contests. However, festivals in the country are
not limited to Christian origins. Many festivals also focus on Islamic or indigenous concepts. There are more than 42,000 known
major and minor festivals in the Philippines, the majority of which are in the barangay (village) level. Due to the thousands of
town, city, provincial, national, and village fiestas in the country, the Philippines has traditionally been known as the Capital of
the World's Festivities.

I. Introduction (Time Frame: _DAY 1_)

Disease is a condition that prevents the body or mind from working normally. Two types of diseases: 1. Communicable diseases
– are illness that can be transferred or passed from one person to another. Common communicable diseases are dengue,
diarrhea, chicken fox, influenza, acute respiratory infection, tuberculosis, sore eyes and AIDS/HIV. 2. Non -communicable or
chronic diseases –are non-infectious illnesses which may result from hereditary or lifestyle factors and not from pathogens.

Common Non – Communicable Diseases

1. Allergy – is synonymous to hypersensitivity, which refers to an exaggerate response to an antibody – forming substance
or antigen. Cause: Food intake, vaccine or blood transfusi on, insect sting, skin contact, or through nasal by smell. Signs
and Symptoms: Swelling of the mucus membrane, redness and itching of eyes, impaired hearing, rashes, and

the Philippines. Types of Cardiovascular Disease are: Coronary heart disease; Heart attack; Angina Pectoris; Rheumatic
Fever; Heart Rhythm Abnormalities or Arrhythmia; Congestive Heart Failure; Stroke. Signs of str oke: According to the
American Heart Association, F.A.S.T is an easy way to remember the signs of stroke. F – Face Drooping. A – Arm
Weakness. S – Speech Difficulty. T – Time to Call.

4. Cancer – caused by abnormal cells growing without control. As these abnormal cells grow, they form in masses called
tumors. Ways to treat cancer through radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy.
Tumors can either be: a. Benign – masses of cells that are not cancerous and do not spread. b. Malignant – masses of
cells that are cancerous. They may spread to other parts of the body by moving along the blood vessels or through
the lymph system. This spreading is called metastasis. Signs and Symptoms are change in bowel or bladder habits, a

diagnosed through urinalysis, urine measurements, blood samples, imaging and kidney tissue samples.
FACT FILE (World Health Organization). 10 acts on Non-Communicable Diseases
1. NCDs are responsible for 63% of all deaths worldwide (36 million out of 57 million global deaths).
2. 80% of NCDs deaths occur in low-and middle-income countries.
3. More than 9 million of all deaths attributed to NCDs occur before the age of 60.
4. Around the world, NCDs affect women and men almost equally.
5. NCDs are largely preventable through effective interventions that tackle shared risk factors, namely: tobacco use,
unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and harmful use of alcohol.
6. 5 billion adults, 20 older were overweight in 2008.
7. Nearly 43 million children under 5 years old were overweight in 2010.
8. Tobacco users kill nearly 6 million people a year.
9. By 2020, the number will increase to 7.5 million, accounting to 10% of all deaths.
10. Eliminating major risks could prevent most NCDs.
There is a need to correct myths and fallacies about non-communicable disease. To be able to treat or to avoid the disease
effectively and so as not to create panic among members in the society. It is very important also to educate the p eople to
reverse whatever myths and fallacies they have in their minds. It will be good if they listen to health professionals about w hat
really these non-communicable diseases are.
