I. Using The Z Table (Table E), Find The Critical Value (Or Values) For Each. (3 Pts Each)

This document provides examples of finding critical values from a z-table for various levels of significance (α) and test directions (one-tailed, two-tailed). It also gives examples of writing the null and alternative hypotheses for conjectures about population means. For each problem, the document shows the work or reasoning to find the critical value or write the hypotheses. It uses these examples to demonstrate how to properly apply the z-test and set up hypotheses about population means.

I.

Using the z table (Table E), find the critical value (or values) for
each. (3 pts each)

a. α = 0.10, two-tailed test ANSWER: -1.65, 1.65

Solution:

 1 – 0.10 = 0.90
 0.90/2 = 0.45
 Locate 0.45 in the z-table
 Hence, I got these critical values, -1.65, 1.65

-1.65 1.65

b. α = 0.01, right-tailed test ANSWER: 2.33

Solution:

 0.5 – 0.01 = 0.49

 Locate 0.49 in the z-table
 Hence, I got a critical value of 2.33

2.33

c. α = 0.005, left-tailed test ANSWER: -2.58

Solution:
 0.5 – 0.005 = 0.495
 Locate 0.495 in the z-table
 Hence, I got a critical value of -2.58

-2.58

d. α = 0.01, left-tailed test ANSWER: -2.33

Solution:

 0.5 – 0.01 = 0.49

 Locate 0.49 in the z-table
 Hence, I got a critical value of -2.33

2.33

e. α = 0.05, right-tailed test ANSWER: 1.65

Solution:

 0.5 – 0.05 = 0.45

 Locate 0.45 in the z-table
 Hence, I got a critical value of 1.65

1.65

f. α = 0.02, left-tailed test ANSWER: -2.05

Solution:

 0.5 – 0.02 = 0.48

 Locate 0.48 in the z-table
 Hence, I got a critical value of -2.05

-2.05

g. α = 0.05, right-tailed test ANSWER: 1.65

Solution:

 0.5 – 0.05 = 0.45

 Locate 0.45 in the z-table
 Hence, I got a critical value of 1.65
1.65

h. α = 0.01, two-tailed test ANSWER: -2.58. 2.58

Solution:

 1 – 0.01 = 0.99
 0.99/2 = 0.495
 Locate 0.495 in the z-table
 Hence, I got these critical values, -2.58, 2.58

-2.58 2.58

i. α = 0.04, left-tailed test ANSWER: -1.75

Solution:

 0.5 – 0.04 = 0.46

 Locate 0.46 in the z-table
 Hence, I got a critical value of -1.75
-1.75

j. α = 0.02, right-tailed test ANSWER: 2.05

Solution:

 0.5 – 0.02 = 0.48

 Locate 0.48 in the z-table
 Hence, we got a critical value of 2.05

2.05
