Water Features

What difference does it make?

• Wall slope toward the sump allows water to

pull away from wall and the edge wall is not
visible (more common)
• Slope toward pool allows water to drop down
face of wall

Water Features

To prevent the water

from “Hugging” the
wall, extend the lip of
the weir 2 cm

This can also be

controlled by water
flow
NOTE: A “rounded edge
will require more flow.

Water Features

Water In Transit can be defined

as any water that will leave the
pool when the circulation
equipment is off.
The total volume of water must
be raised to the expected weir
depth.
Water Features

For a 30 meter pool:

It would take Approx. 180 liters of
water to raise the water level in
the pool 6 mm.

1,000 liters ÷ 100 cm = 10 Liter/cm

10 x .6 cm depth = 6 liters
6 liters x 30 meters =
180 liters (10.8 m³/h)
Water Features

A 6 mm water depth at
the top of the weir would
provide a 1 m waterfall.

For a 2 m waterfall
increase this depth to
1.2 cm
Water Features

Flow Requirements For Vanishing Edge

120 liters per minute (7.2 m³/h)

per meter of edge for a 6 mm
weir depth for a 1 meter drop

For a 2 meter drop, 240 liters

per minute (14.4 m³/h) per
meter of edge for a 1.2 cm weir
depth

Water Features

The basin should be .3 meters wider

than the weir wall, to catch all the
water on a windy day.

1 meter should be the minimum depth

to compensate for votex effects.
Water Features
Bather Surge
The 5 cm Rule…….

Size the Basin large enough to allow for

the top 5 cm of water in the pool.

1,000 ÷ 100 (cm) = 10 liters/cm

10 liters X 5 cm = 50 liters

50 X 30 (surface area) = 1,500 liters

100 liters per bather, depending on pool activity

Water Features

For an 30 meter pool, 6 mm water

over weir:

Water in Transit = 180 liters

Bather surge = 1,500 liters

Total = 1,680 liters

Water Features

Elevated Spa - In the event of a check valve

failure, the basin would need to be large enough
to contain water from the spa.

Vortexing – Maintain a minimum water depth of

.3 meters in the basin to prevent the pump from
pulling air.

Overflow – Install a overflow line in the basin.

Water Features

The basin must

be able to hold:
The water in transit.
Bather surge.

Spa volume.
30 cm Vortex Reserve.
Water Features

1,680 liters:
1,680 ÷ 1000 = 1.68 m².

For a 3 m weir, the basin should be 4 m long.

If the basin was 1.5 m wide, that would

be a 6 m² basin

(4 m Long X 1.5 m Wide = 6 m²)

Water Features

By dividing the 1.68 m² by the 6 m², will give

you the required depth.

1.68 ÷ 6 = .3 meters deep

1 Add the .3 meters required to prevent

meter should be the minimum depth
vortexing and the total minimum depth
to compensate
would be .6 meters for votex effects.

The basin needs to be .6 meters deep

from the bottom of the overflow line.
Water Features
If the water from the basin is returned to the
pool below the water level, Install a Hartford
Loop with a vacuum breaker at the pool water
level.
Dirt and Debris will end up in the catch
basin, this water may need to be filtered
with a separate filter, skimmer system
and vacuum line.
Consider an Auto Fill Device to
compensate for evaporation loss .
