KWAKU
A scheme of work is a plan that outlines all the learning to be covered over a given period of

time (usually a term or a whole year). A teacher’s scheme of work is therefore his plan of actions

which will enable him/her organize teaching activities ahead of time. It is a summarized forecast

of work which the teacher considers adequate and appropriate for the class to cover within a

given period. This the teacher does by using topics which are already set in the syllabus. At the

J.H.S, it takes one (1) to three (3) years. Each year is divided into three (3) term with each term

lasting for three (3) months or thirteen (13) weeks. A well prepared scheme of work should

include the following; give an overview of the total course content, provide for a sequential

listing of learning tasks, show a relationship between content and support materials and lastly,

provide basis for a long range planning, training and evaluation of the course.

Components of the Scheme of work

1. Teacher’s name

2. Subjects name

3. Class

4. Date of revision and examination

5. Syllabus topic (lesson title)

6. Number of weeks and week endings

7. Remarks

Why is there a need for a Scheme of Work?

1. It helps the teacher to know, prepare and gather teaching and learning resources or materials in

advance.
2. Guides the teacher in making lesson plan.

3. Helps the teacher to identify challenging topics so that the teacher prepares for them.

4. It checks the teacher’s pace at teaching.

5. It enhances smooth handing over in case of transfer of a teacher.

6. Helps the teacher in arranging topics sequentially.

7. It enables the teacher to budget for time wisely which enables him to give room for events and

activities which might interfere with the school calendar.
