ROADMAP TO SUCCESS IN THE ENERGY & UTILITIES INDUSTRY

1. PROJECT DEFINITION: To become the Director of Energy Supply for Bahamas Power &
Light
Company Ltd.

Presently, | am the Operations Manager/Fuels Manager for the Clifton Pier Power
Station on the island
of New Providence. | am responsible for a 103 MW power plant that supplies
electricity to the island. In
addition | manage the Fuel and Lubricant procurement for this facility and all
other power plants spread
across the archipelago of The Bahamas.

My goal is to improve the operations at the the Clifton Pier Power Station and gain
experience to
become the Director of Energy supply at the executive leve! responsible for all
power facilities in The
Bahamas.

! believe that ! can improve the operations by addressing the following areas at
the Clifton Pier Power
Station:

SAFETY: Reduce Incidents. Safety is priority 1 at a power plant and | need to


ensure the staff follow
guidelines and our aware of importance as they do their daily tasks. So everyone
needs to be involved in
order for it to work. | would need training and support from management to achieve
this.

TRAINING: Build workforce capabilities. | need to ensure all staff are well trained
and refreshed on their
roles and responsibilities within the power plant to ensure we operate safely.

RELIABILITY: Operation by Procedures. Our performance is based upon keeping units


online and the
lowest costs. Operators need to follow proper procedures and identify issues
immediately. Establishing
procedures and constant checking will ensure they operate correctly.

MAINTENANCE: Improve Defect Detection, Analysis of Root Cause, Follow schedule,


Preventative, Parts
availability. Need to ensure operators detect defects so that maintenance can
repair with minimum
downtime. Proper planning and having parts available is key. Following a
maintenance schedule will
ensure no force outages occur.

HOUSEKEEPING: Keeping all areas clean, reduce impact on the environment. Operations
needs to keep
the plant free of debris. Ensure all areas are oil free and ensure all waste is
disposed of correctly to
protect the environment, Need proper equipment and training from management. Staff
must be vigilant
and take ownership of their surroundings.

Ensuring these are done will greatly improve the way we operate and the way the
plant looks today.
This will indeed be a great accomplishment while | am in this position. Some
roadblocks would be staff
buy in, management support and funding. | can continue my self-development through
seminars and
online courses such as this one. In addition the utility may offer specific
training that will help me
achieve my goal.
2. SELF ASSESSMENT: SWOT ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS: Intelligent, Fast learner, diverse background, Reliable, Hard Worker,
Ability to multitask.
WEAKNESSES: Managing time, seldom ask for help
OPPORTUNITIES: Generation expansion, Diversification, Technology

THREATS: Management changes, Storms, Accidents, Environment disasters, time.

3. GATHER RESOURCES:

Senior Shift Managers — Manage operators daily. Know facility and procudures. Will
provide support
daily.

OEM Technical Advisors — Provide a resource for procedures and troubleshooting


issues.

Department managers — Cross training or sharing of knowledge across departments.


Ensure | am aware
of all areas as | move to executive level.
