Cecil the lion, who was killed on 1st July, 2015 in Africa, was labelled as one
of Africa’s most famous lions and was something of a celebrity at Hwange
National Park in Zimbabwe. The 13-year-old black fringe maned animal was a

and approximately 100,000 Asian elephants. Now
that elephants are considered endangered, there are
about 450,000-700,000 African elephants and 35,000-
40,000 Asian elephants left. Approximately 96 African
elephants are killed each day. Typically the largest
adults, with the biggest tusks are poached - putting
the matriarchs of elephant herds at the greatest risk.
In 2011 over 23 tons of ivory were confiscated. This is
equivalent to at least 2,500 elephants. Ivory is carved
into jewellery, cutlery, religious figurines and trinkets.
Tigers are primarily killed to supply underground black
markets with their organs, pelts, and bones. These
items are highly valuable in eastern medicine.
As the data above show poaching is one of the most
serious threats to the survival of the animal population.
There exists an international market for poached wildlife
and well-organised gangs of professional poachers
who hunt. The problem of poaching can and should be
addressed with a three sided approach:
1. Stopping the killing.
2. Stopping trafficking.
3. Stopping the demand.
Raising awareness is also an important issue.
Several organizations campaign against illegal
hunting and trafficking. There are some world famous
environmentalists who are highly passionate about
nature and preserving animal species and consider it
their mission to let the world know about their findings.
One of them was Joy Adamson. She is best known
for her conservation efforts associated with Elsa the

the publication of the book “ Born Free” . The lion cub
didn’t have a great start to life. Her mother was killed
by Joy’s game warden husband George, to stop an

and her siblings in, keeping Elsa and sending the
others to a zoo. The young lioness lived the life of a
domesticated pet, but Joy was determined to give her
a life in the wild, gradually introducing her to the world
of game reservations. She spent many months training
her to hunt and survive on her own. The attempt was in
the end successful, and Elsa became the first lioness
successfully released back into the wild and the first
lioness known to have cubs. The Adamsons kept their
distance from the cubs, getting close enough only to
photograph them. Elsa had three cubs, who probably
became fully adjusted to their life in the wild. Elsa
unfortunately died early to a tick-born disease. George
Adamson and his scouts fired 20 shots over Elsa’s
grave at her burial.
Using her own notes and George’s journals, Joy
Adamson wrote Born Free to tell the lions’ tale.
Published in 1960, it became a bestseller, spending 13
weeks at the top of The New York Times Best Seller
list. The success of the book was due to both the
story of Elsa and the dozens of photographs of her.
Joy Adamson spent the rest of her life raising money
for wildlife, thanks to the popularity of Born Free. The
book was followed by Living Free, which is about Elsa
as a mother to her cubs, and Forever Free, which tells
of the release of the cubs Jespah, Gopa and Little
Elsa. Adamson shared book proceeds with various
conservation projects.
Another well-known environmentalist is Jane
Goodall. She is an English primatologist, ethologist,
anthropologist, and UN Messenger of Peace.

The terracotta warriors and horses, a huge collection
of sculptures, depict the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the
first Emperor of China. Their purpose was to protect
the emperor in the afterlife, and therefore the figures
were buried with the emperor in 210-209 BCE. The
terracotta sculptures were discovered in 1974 by local
farmers digging a well in Xi’an, Shaanxi province.
When the excavation began, archeologists found that
an entire necropolis had been built surrounding the first
emperor’s tomb. The necropolis consists of offices,
stables and halls placed around the tomb mound. The
terracotta army figures are life-sized. Their appearance
is quite diverse: eight different moulds were used for
their faces, but individual facial features were done
with clay. The army held more than 8,000 soldiers (just
imagine making all those faces!), 130 chariots with 520
horses and 150 cavalry horses according to a 2007
estimate. Non-military sculptures (officials, acrobats,
musicians) were also found in other pits. Originally,
the figures were painted bright pink, red, blue, green,
black, white, lilac and brown with a lacquer finish
increasing their realism. A small part of the terracotta
army travelled to Europe and North America and the

give way to a different experience towards the Middle
Reaches. Fengdu Ghost City is a town of tombs and

The Silk Road is an ancient network of trade routes
connecting the West and the East from China and
India to the Mediterranean Sea. In 2014 UNESCO
designated the Chang’an-Tianshan corridor of the
Silk Road as a World Heritage Site. The Silk Road
derives its name from the silk trade, being the major
reason for the connection and extension of trade
routes. Nowadays, there are many tours (starting from
Beijing, for instance) exploring the routes of camel
trains, Buddhist temples, ancient architecture and the
mysteries of the historical road.
All these sights and attractions, however significant and
famous, are just a glimpse of what a traveller can find
on a trip to China. Ancient history, a diverse and spicy
cuisine, modern architecture and breathtaking scenery
are all part of this rich picture and probably everyone
can find something to be enthusiastic about.

three office workers have felt physical pain
in the last month. The results also showed
that the major part of the participants had
felt pain in their lower backs, while more
than 50 percent in their necks, 38 percent
in their shoulders, 33 percent in their
wrists and 31 percent in their upper backs.
... but what causes all that discomfort? From
smart phones to computers and iPads, our beloved
electronic devices are crippling our posture and
contributing to weight gain, back pain, and also joint
problems. Sitting may actually cut years off your
life! Reducing the average time you spend sitting to
less than three hours per day could increase your life
expectancy by two years! So, what to do?

Fortunately, the main factors affecting posture are
completely controllable and are not difficult to change.
A basic remedy is to simply get up! If you’re on your
backside for long hours during the day, it’s important
to give your body a break by standing up. When
standing, distribute body weight evenly to the front,
back, and sides of the feet. Pause to stretch every 30
minutes to an hour.
Any prolonged sitting position, even a good one, can
be tiring, so when you are sitting, make sure to park
yourself at your desk the proper way!
Support your back
A correctly adjusted chair will reduce the strain on your
back. Your chair should be easily adjustable so that
you can change the height, back position and tilt. Have
your knees level with your hips.
Adjust your chair
Adjust your chair height so that you can use the
keyboard with your wrists and forearms straight and level
with the floor. Your elbows should be by the side of your
body so that the arm forms an L-shape at the elbow joint.
Rest your feet on floor
Your feet should be flat on the floor. Don’t cross your
legs, as this can cause posture-related problems.
Place your screen at eye level
Your screen should be directly in front of you. Place
the monitor about an arm’s length away, with the top
of the screen roughly at eye level. If the screen is too
high or too low, you’ll have to bend your neck, which
can be uncomfortable.

A father and daughter have transformed
a horse box into a “Gin Tin”. “The Gin
Tin” is a mobile bar, established by
father and daughter duo, John Shanks
and Anna Shanks, and family friend Chloe
Davies. Offering a bespoke service with
more than just gin, this charming bar was
transformed from a traditional horse box
in just eight weeks.

The trio, who had always wanted to venture into
events, worked together to turn the 10-year-old Rice
Beaufort horse box into a beautiful mobile bar. Anna
explains that they were lucky enough to purchase
the first horse box they viewed, and in February
2015, the green trailer was towed away to her
new home. By April 2015, the conversion process
was underway. Over the next eight weeks John
replaced horse hair and hay with pine worktops
and a handmade bar. Anna says that watching her
dad turn a horse box into a bar in eight weeks was a
phenomenal achievement to witness.
“It was like wow, we actually did it. We had often
spoken about starting a business together and, aside
from our love o f gin, this was born from a desire to
try something completely different to what we do
in our day jobs. I have often worked in the drinks
trade and when I saw a mobile bar at a wedding last
year I knew I had found a concept that tic k e d a lot
o f boxes for me, it was a chance to get back into

Have you ever seen that scruffy face on Burt’s Bees
hand salve? The man depicted in the logo of the
brand is Burt Shavitz, the reclusive beekeeper who
co-founded the company. The face of one of America’s
best known and loved natural brands has died at 80.
“Burt Shavitz, our co-founder and namesake, has left
for greener fields and wilder woods," the company
said in a statement posted to its website. “We
remember him as a bearded, free-spirited Maine man, a
beekeeper, a wisecracker, a lover o f golden retrievers
and his land. Above all, he taught us to never lose sight
of our relationship with nature. Thanks for everything,
Burt. You will live in our hearts forever. ”
Born in Great Neck, New York, Shavitz was a news
photographer who came upon his first bees swarm ing
around a fencepost after a rainstorm. “The year
before, a guy that I’d been buying honey from, who
was a beekeeper, had given me everything I needed
to be a beekeeper except the bees - a hive, a mask,
gloves, a smoker, a hive tool, everything,” Shavitz said
in the documentary Burt’s Buzz. “So, there was this
fencepost, and I said, ‘My lord, this is an act o f God! I
can’t turn this down.
Shavitz, being terrified of growing old in a dingy
apartment, headed to the country, grew out his hair and

beard and eventually settled in Maine. After discovering
beekeeping as a source of income he met Roxanne
Quimby. The local single mother was hitchhiking, Burt
picked her up and this chance encounter led to the
birth of their company. They became friends (and more)
and Roxanne started making candles with unused wax
from Burt’s beehives. Within a year, they made $20,000
and it was just the beginning.
Roxanne and Burt incorporated the company in 1991.
Burt, who was content selling just enough products
to keep his simple lifestyle, never shared Roxanne’s
passion fo r business growth. But he agreed to
become the face of the company, appearing in print

the professional sports league with the fourth-highest
attendance in the world.
People often say football is the most
popular sport in the world. However,
they often forget that different parts of
the world sometimes have their very own
versions of football or other unique ball
games. For an outsider, these “other”
footballs can be just as exciting as they
are strange. Let’s see what there is to love
about some of these different cultures'

Unique Traditions
The AFL doesn’t only hand out rewards for wins.
The last team in the league also receives a “ Wooden
Spoon” award.
Indigenous Australians play an important role in
Australian football. While only two per cent of the
Australian population are Indigenous, nine per cent of
AFL players belong to this group.
Australian football might sound violent, but players
wear almost no protection at all. They play in shorts
and sleeveless shirts called guernseys.
The AFL has also grown to be a symbol of patriotism .
The matches played on ANZAC Day (a national holiday
celebrating the Australian and New Zealand Army
Corps of World War I) each year attract the most
supporters apart from the Grand Final. For the first
ANZAC Day clash in 1995, that meant 94,825 people!
There is an ANZAC Medal awarded to the player who is
the best example of great skill, courage, self-sacrifice,
teamwork and fair play: that is, the ANZAC spirit.

Gaelic Football
If you say “football” in Ireland, it can easily be
understood as Gaelic football. Gaelic football is the

In Ireland and Beyond

counties, which is also why
the most prestigious inter­
county competition is called
the All-Ireland Championship.
These games, organised
in the summer, are usually
cheered on by more than
80,000 fans! There are also
competitions for women, with
slightly different rules. Ladies
Gaelic football was started
in 1974, and today there are
over 1000 clubs for women in
the country.
Just like hurling, Gaelic
football is also played
around the world by Irish
communities. It also shares
a lot of similarities with
Australian football. Beginning
in the 1960s, Australian
teams started visiting Ireland
to play Gaelic football against
Irish teams, and they were
tough competition. Then,
in 1984, International Rules
football was created as a
mixture of the two sports.
International Rules “tests”

every year. They are wild and

km/h, and a well-struck ball can fly as far as 80 metres!

Hurling
If you think European football (association football)
has a lot of history, you probably haven’t heard about
hurling yet. Hurling is one of Ireland’s most popular
ball games besides Gaelic football. It has been played
for over 3000 years, and it is part of ancient Irish
mythology. Today it is often said to be the fastest field
sport in the world. It is not only played in Ireland but all
over the world by communities of the Irish diaspora,
from the USA to South Africa or even Argentina. Hurling
is only played by men, but there is a similar game,
Camogie, for women only.
Local Pride
The biggest games in hurling are played between
different counties of Ireland, but local rivalries are
also incredibly competitive. It is a great honour for
local players to be selected to represent their county.
All players must live or work in the county that they
play for. In a curious instance in the 1900 all-Ireland
semi-final, Kilkenny defeated Tipperary, however, the
losers complained that five players from the winning
team were in fact from Tipperary. Kilkenny were then
disqualified, but their five players played in the final...
for Tipperary, their true local team.
Hurling is an amateur sport, so no players are paid, but
players often practise as much as professionals, and
support is also huge. In the last all-Ireland championship
final in Croke Park in Dublin, Kilkenny defeated
Tipperary to win the title before 82,000 supporters.
This year’s final will be played in September by
Kilkenny and Galway.

Speed and Skill

In hurling, 15 players (or “ hurlers”) on each team use a
wooden stick (“hurley” or “caman” in Irish) to get a ball
(“sliotar”) in the opponents’ goal. There are multiple
ways to score, however. If the ball goes over the
crossbar, the team gets one point, and if it goes under

Fear is a basic human emotion. Fear helps protect us, it
makes us alert to danger and prepares us to deal w ith
it. When you sense danger, your brain reacts instantly
and the signals cause physical responses, such as a
faster heartbeat, rapid breathing and increased blood
pressure. Sometimes fear is trigg ered by something
that is unexpected, even if it is not dangerous.
Almost everyone has an Irrational fear of something.
Some get nervous at the thought of spiders and other
insects. Others shriek at the sight of a mouse. Still
others g et w o ozy when they look down from tall
buildings. For most people, these fears are minor. But
for some, these fears are so severe that they cause
trem endous anxiety and interfere w ith normal day-
to-day life.
When fears are irrational and disabling, they are
called phobias. A phobia is an intense fear of

Having a phobia can interfere with normal activities. A
person with a phobia of cats might feel afraid to walk
down the street in case he or she sees a cat on the
way. Someone with an elevator phobia might avoid a
trip or a chore if it involves going on an elevator. It can
be exhausting and upsetting to feel the intense fear
that goes with having a phobia.
Some phobias, such as fear of flying or driving, are
so common that there are therapists who specialize
in their trea tm en t. The number of treatments you will
need depends on the severity of your phobia, but
exposure-based therapy is typically brief. Phobias that
are limited can often be treated in as little as two to
four sessions. Sometimes a single, long session is all
that is needed.
Besides the more common phobias there are many
that affect only a small number of people. Fear of long
words, fear of the number 13, fear of puppets and fear
of objects with holes are some of these rare phobias
that can be equally severe and life-altering for those
suffering from them.

There are four general types of common phobias and fears:
Animal phobias: Animal phobias are fears caused by an animal or an insect.
Examples include fear of snakes, fear of spiders, fear of rodents, and fear of
dogs.
Natural environm ent phobias: Natural environm ent phobias are fears caused
by objects found in nature. Examples include fear of heights, fear of storms,
fear of water, and fear of the dark.
Situational phobias: Situational phobias are fears triggered by a specific
situation. Examples include fear of enclosed spaces (claustrophobia), fear of
elevators, fear of flying, fear of dentists, fear of driving, fear of tunnels, and fear
of bridges.
Blood - Injection - Injury phobia: Blood-injection-injury phobia involves fear
of blood, fear or injury, or a fear of shots or another medical procedure.

People with phobias experience many anxiety-related

situation they fear. The symptoms are both emotional and
physical. The symptoms of anxiety and fear can range

attack. Typically, the closer you are to the thing you’re
afraid of, the greater your fear will be. Your fear will also be
higher if escape from it is difficult. Phobia is not the only
thing that can provoke fear. Having nightmares can be very

Gerund és infinitive
alakok használata
Először is tisztázzuk, hogy mi micsoda, így talán
könnyebb lesz megérteni a szabályokat, és megtalálni a
logikáját annak, hogy mikor melyiket kell használni.
INFINITIVE
Az „infinitive” magyarul főnévi igenevet jelenet. Az angol
nyelvben két formája létezik a csupasz, azaz „bare
infinitive”, illetve a „to infinitive”, amely - ahogy a neve
is mutatja - felveszi maga elé a „to ” szócskát.
Nagyon fontos, hogy nem egyezik meg (teljes
egészében) a magyar főnévi igenév használatával, így
amikor el szeretnéd dönteni, hogy melyiket használod
egy adott mondatban, akkor ne a magyar nyelvből
indulj ki.
Az „infinitive” alakokat használjuk szótári alakként
is. Mi a „to ” szócskával ellátott formát szoktuk a
szószedetekben használni, de sok (főleg egynyelvű)
szótár a csupasz alakot tünteti fel.

GERUND
A „gerund", mint szófaj nem létezik a magyar nyelvben,
talán ezért is okoz legtöbbször nehézséget a megértése
a magyar nyelvtanulók számára. A legtöbben „inges”
igének szokták hívni, ami helytelen, hiszen a „gerund"
önmagában lehet főnév, melléknév, határozói vagy
melléknévi igenév, de ige soha. Hogy ez világosabb
legyen, nézzünk egy példát.
1) You’re learning English at the m om ent. - Te most
éppen angolul tanulsz.
Itt a „gerund" egy Present Continuous igeidőben
képzett állítmány (are learning) része, ami ugye áll egy
megfelelően képzett „be” létigéből és egy „gerund"-ból.
2) Learning English is fun. - Az angoltanulás jó móka.
A „learning" szó ebben az esetben egy igéből képzett
főnév, tehát gyakorlatilag főnév, magyarul „tanulás".
3) She im proved her English, learning 50 new w ords
every day. - Naponta 50 új szót megtanulva fejlesztette
angoltudását.
Ebben az esetben a „learning” határozói igenév
(megtanulva), amely szófajhoz a magyarban a -va,-ve,
-ván, -vén végződésű szavak tartoznak.

brother. - A biciklizni tanuló kisfiú az öcsém.
Ebben az esetben pedig folyamatos melléknévi igenév
(tanuló) lesz a „gerund”.
A melléknévi igenév az ige egyik személytelen alakja
(a főnévi és a határozói igenév mellett), amely a
mondatban általában melléknévi szerepet tölt be. A
melléknévi igenév az ige és a melléknév tulajdonságait
ötvözi. A mai magyar nyelvben háromféle melléknévi
igenevet szoktunk megkülönböztetni: a folyamatos
(egyidejű), a befejezett (előidejű) és a beálló (utóidejű)
melléknévi igenevet. A folyamatos melléknévi igenév
képzője az -ó/ő, a befejezetté a múlt idő jelével
többnyire megegyező alakú -(o)t(t), a beállóé az -andó!

RÖVIDEN A HASZNÁLATÁRÓL
Mielőtt részletesen megnéznénk, hogy mikor melyik
alakot kell használni, röviden, nagy vonalakban
összefoglalom a legfontosabb tudnivalókat.
„G erund” (azaz „inges”) alakot használunk:

- bizonyos igék után: I enjoy cooking. - Szeretek főzni.

- prepozíciók után: She drank a cup of coffee before
/
leaving. - Ivott egy csésze kávét, mielőtt elment
(„elmenés előtt”).
- amennyiben az ige(név) a tárgya vagy az alanya a
mondatnak: Swimming is a great sport. - Az úszás
kitűnő sport.
„To+infinitive” alakot használunk:

- bizonyos igék után: I decided to quit. - Úgy

döntöttem, hogy kilépek.
- számos melléknév után: It’s difficult to get up early. -
Nehéz korán felkelni.
- célhatározói mondatokban: I came to England to

How to do a monthly budget
Developing a monthly budget can help you get out of debt and build wealth.
Starting a budget requires a lot of work and self-discipline, however. You
should gather together all your financial statements for the past 3 to 12
months to form the most accurate budget possible. After sorting through
these statements, you must determine your income and expenses. Among
your expenses, you must be prepared to make viable cuts that you can stick
with in order to make a difference to the overall state of your finances.
Check your liquid accounts. “Liquid” refers to any account from which you
can immediately draw money. Look at savings, checking, and investment
accounts. Make a note of how much money is in each account, as well as the
interest rate and expenses attached to each account.
Calculate your monthly income and factor in other sources of income. Other
income includes any money you receive regularly that you do not work for,
such as alimony.
Calculate your total monthly debt payments. Find out how much you owe
per month on car loans, mortgage, rent, credit cards, student loans, and
any other form of debt. Mark down each figure separately, but also total the
figures together to determine how much you owe.

The Route of the Orient Express
The train inaugurated in 1883 by the Belgian entrepreneur Georges Na-
gelmackers has become the most famous in the world. Its history and
the story of its many different routes fill whole books, and even before
its resuscitation by the American entrepreneur James Sherwood in
1982 it had become a byword for all that was most intriguing, romantic
and mysterious about long-distance international train travel.
The original Orient Express ran between Paris and Istanbul, but new
routes (and variations on the name) were developed. In its pre-war
years at least, it was also associated with elegance and luxury and
culinary excellence, and it is these qualities that characterise today’s
private train, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.
Appropriately enough for a train steeped in romance, its principal
routes link three of Europe’s most beguiling cities, London, Paris
and Venice. The chocolate-and-cream British Pullman train departs
from London Victoria and glides through Kent, the London-bound
commuters waiting on station platforms looking on enviously. In France
the royal-blue train with brass insignia, lined by uniformed and white-
gloved attendants, is waiting to take you through the most fought-over
acres of France to the capital, while a four-course dinner is served.
In Paris the train uses the same station from which the first Orient
Express departed on October 4 1883. The sense of dinner-jacketed
style is enhanced by the contrast with passengers milling about on the
platforms, the bar car’s piano and period tunes a world away from the
iPods of today’s Parisian commuters.

Average your monthly utilities and grocery bill. Utilities include any monthly
service you pay someone else to provide, and usually cover bills for water,
electric, gas, phone, Internet sen/ice, cable, and satellite.
Look at your past cash withdrawals to determine how much was spent on
necessity versus want. Decide how you want to keep track of your budget.
You can use pencil and paper, standard spreadsheet software, or specialized
budget software. Software may make it easier to calculate and alter as
necessary, but you may also find it convenient to write your budget out and
keep it by your checkbook or credit card to serve as a constant reminder.
Organize your budget. Separate your budget into two basic sections: income
and expenses. Fill in each section with the information as you calculated it
above, marking down a separate entry for each individual source of income
as well as each expense. Subtract your total expenses from your new
income. In order to save up money, you must have a positive difference. In
order to break even, the two totals must balance each other out.
Never allow your total expenses to match or exceed your total income.
Occasionally exceeding your new income only means that your savings will
dwindle, and you can do so from time to time if needed, even though you
should not make a monthly habit of it. Your total income, however, also
includes your savings, so if you exceed it, you will go into debt.

It is likely to be dark by the time the train weaves through the hills
growing the pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier grapes that
produce the Champagne served on board. Passengers slumber
through eastern France and northern Switzerland, usually waking
somewhere east of Zürich.
The snow-capped peaks of tiny Liechtenstein are a prelude to
the Austrian Alps, as a continental breakfast is delivered to your
compartment. After crossing the border into Austria the train climbs
towards the Arlberg Pass and summit tunnel to reach Innsbruck. The
train weaves along the contours as a succession of stone castles
and impressive church towers strain skyward among the natural

A pause at the Tyrolean capital of Innsbruck is an opportunity to stretch
one’s legs before the train reverses to head south through the Brenner
Pass, its crags periodically topped by stone fortresses controlling
valleys through the Dolomites. Lunch is served as the train drops down
from the summit on the border with Italy, conifer-clad slopes giving
way to huddled villages surrounded by vineyards and orchards.
Afternoon tea is served as the train crosses the fertile landscape of
the Veneto, dotted with the vast agricultural complexes so perfectly
realised by Palladio in the countryside around Vicenza. The last
major city before journey’s end is Padua, where Galileo once taught
mathematics at the university, founded in 1222. Then, when the train
arrives in Venice and you walk out of Santa Lucia terminus, you find
yourself on the bank of the Grand Canal.

period then. It looks a real cheap way of getting
around in the town. Why don’t we try them
together? We could go for a nice ride in one of
the parks at the weekend.

WHY DO WE WORK OVERTIME?

Fear of being fired? Being worried about making a mistake? Feeling
overwhelmed by the heavy workload? Slowly becoming a workaholic?
Working overtime has many reasons. Project closure, deadlines, closing
a financial period, upcoming events... What can we do to find the balance
between work and privacy?

Unplanned or more than average num ber of tasks

There is no official work time, just tasks to be carried out - this is how you usually
THE O V ER T IM E explain when you find yourself sitting in the office in the evening. Extra working hours
have plenty of reasons. There are specific companies and roles, where the number
of deadlines gradually increase, which requires more work than usual. Elsewhere
the tasks are calculated with an optimal manpower, not counting on unexpected
situations. This occurs when a colleague suddenly gets sick and someone else has
to take the job or maybe a new project comes in with a strict deadline in the very
last moment.

Fear of losing your job

Not only ad-hoc situations are responsible for all those plus working hours. Most of
you are afraid of losing your job therefore even if official office hours are long gone,
you hesitate to go home because you would like to avoid negative judgements.
Unfortunately all the fears mentioned are true. Sometimes you can easily run into
disapproving glances and sarcastic comments if you leave the office earlier than the
others. Happily it’s not so common.

Draw the line

If you have already got used to working late, then after a certain point, it’s extremely
difficult to change your routine. As a matter of fact if you haven’t been able to solve
this kind of problem for a long time, then it might cause you stress-related health
problems. In this case you must start thinking about a major change. If you like your
job, just try to talk to your boss about these problems. If you are not fond of your
work at all, it’s never too late to find other career opportunities.

Mivel mi itt most - ahogy mindig - az
angol nyelvre koncentrálunk, akár úgy is
fogalm azhatnánk a kérdést, hogy hogyan
kezdjünk el újra angolt tanulni, hiszen
kevés m agyart találni, a fiatalabb ge­
nerációk körében pedig szinte alig-alig
akad olyan, aki ne tanult volna korábban
már legalább egy kicsit angolul. A m aga­
zin olvasói között pedig talán nincsenek
is ilyenek.

Olyan viszont sokszor előfordul, hogy valaki úgy gondolja, újra
szeretné kezdeni a nyelvtanulást. Egészen elölről, mert ha tud is
valamit, az ismeretei - különösen a nyelvtani ismeretei - olyan
zavarosak, hogy attól tart, ha valahol a nyelvtanulási folyamat
közepén csatlakozik be, akkor nem fogja tudni „rendesen el­
kapni a fonalat” , és a zavar sosem szűnik meg a fejében.
Egyénileg, egyedül vagy magántanár segítségével tényleg
hasznos lehet újra átnézni és rendbe tenni az alapokat, és úgy
építkezni tovább. Ha tanfolyamot választasz, akkor viszont
nem biztos, hogy jó ötlet ugyanazokat a szerkezeteket az
unalomig gyakorolni, amiket már amúgy is jól ismersz. Persze
az is megesik az ilyen kezdő vagy újrakezdő csoportoknál,
hogy mindenki hasonló cipőben jár, és ha a tanár is elég
rugalmas, hatékonyan tudtok ismételni és haladni is.
Mondhatnánk persze, hogy nem kell mindig „visszamenni a
kályhához” , legyünk merészebbek, haladjunk tovább, aztán
majd útközben tisztázódnak a dolgok. Végül is a kisgyerekek
is így tanulják a nyelvet. Bár ez igaz, de ők rendelkeznek egy
olyan képességgel, amellyel a felnőttek (különösen az életkor
előrehaladtával) már kevésbé, azzal, hogy jól tűrik azt, ha
nem értenek mindent, hanem a hallottaknak csak bizonyos
százalékát. Ők nem annyira tudatosan, hanem inkább ösztön-
szerűen használják a nyelvi szerkezeteket. Ha netán te is ilyen
vagy, vagy inkább a kalandokat kedveled, és nem jól tűröd a
monotóniát, akár ki is hagyhatod ezt a fázist, és nyugodtan
„beugorhatsz a mély vízbe” , választhatsz egy erősebb cso­
portot. Ha viszont a többséghez tartozol, kezdd (újra) inkább
kicsit alacsonyabb szintről, ismétléssel, de igyekezz azért
viszonylag nagyobb tempóban átmenni ezen a fázison. Azt is

figyelembe kell vennünk, hogy mivel nem olyan intenzitással
vesz körül minket egy új nyelv, mint a kisgyerekeket az anya­
nyelvűk, tényleg szükségünk van a tudatosabb rendszerezésre
és gyakorlásra is. A kettő nem feltétlenül zárja ki egymást: a
nyelvtankönyvek „száraz” rendszerezését és gyakorlatait jól
kiegészítheti a filmnézés vagy az internetes oldalak böngészé­
se, amikor nem baj, ha nem értesz mindent, de mégis sokat
használ, hogy „megmerítkezel” az angolban.
Sokkal többen kezdenek el nyelvet tanulni, mint ahányan sike­
resen folytatják, és érnek el a kitűzött célhoz - a nyelvtanulás
sokkal inkább maratoni futáshoz hasonlít, mint rövid sprinthez.
Ezért a kezdésnél nagyon fontos az, hogy megfelelő hozzá­
állással kezdjük el, ami megadja azt az alapot, hogy amikor
elfogy a kedvünk, időnk, energiánk, amikor kezd nem olyan
érdekes és izgalmas lenni a tanulás, mint a legelején, akkor se
adjuk fel. Ennek a receptnek egyik legfontosabb összetevője
a folytonos sikerélmény. Az, hogy tudj örülni annak, amit már
elértél. Ne a hibáidra koncentrálj, vagy arra, hogy mennyi min­
dent nem értesz, és nem tudsz még elmondani, hanem inkább
újabb és újabb győzelemként, élményként éld meg azt, hogy
már megint van valami, amit megértettél, valami, amit ha nem
is tökéletesen, de sikerült elmondanod a tanult nyelven.
Ha már a futással példálóztunk, egyedül futni is nehezebb,
és a nyelvtanulás is könnyebb, ha vannak társaid. Ha nincs
körülötted egy jó csoport, ahol tanulsz, különösen fontos,
hogy találj társakat, akikkel kommunikálhatsz. Ha nem vagy
olyan szerencsés, hogy vannak külföldi ismerőseid, kollégáid,
akkor az interneten is próbálhatod tartani a kapcsolatod régi
ismerősökkel vagy találhatsz újakat. Sőt, ha csak magyarokkal
tudsz beszélgetni angolul, az sem baj. Nem számít, hogy nem
mindig tanárral vagy anyanyelvűvel beszélsz, aki ki tud javítani,
ha hibázol - egy anyanyelvű, aki nem tanár, ezt valószínűleg
úgy sem nagyon teszi meg, mert ő is arra figyel, és annak örül,
hogy megértetheti magát veled. Szóval nyelvet tanulni érde­
kes, hasznos és jó. Örömet és sikerélményt élhetsz át nyelvta­
nulás közben. Ne engedd hát, hogy a kudarcok ellopják tőled
ezt az örömet!
Foglaljuk össze néhány pontban, hogy mire is érdemes figyelni:
1. Tűzz ki magad elé világos és elérhető célokat!
Ha tanfolyamra jársz, akkor ez persze könnyebb, de ha
egyénileg tanulsz, akkor még fontosabb. Hány oldal, hány
szó, hány óra - ilyen dolgokat. Jó, mondhatod, úgyse sikerül
mindig tartani magadat ezekhez, és ettől akkor csak még
rosszabbul érzed majd magad. Ne ess kétségbe ettől, hanem
figyelj inkább a következő pontra.
2. Ne arra koncentrálj, hogy mit nem tudsz még,
vagy mit nem sikerült megvalósítani, hanem arra,
hogy mi az, amit már elértél!
Az ember hajlamos elfeledkezni arról, hogy mi mindent tud
már. Ezért érdemes ismételni is - jó érzés, hogy „ezt már
tudom, ez már megy” - és ezért fontos, hogy kommunikálj
szóban vagy írásban másokkal angolul, hogy ne csak passzív
folyamat legyen a tanulás, hanem aktív élmény.
„You’re never as good as you think, bút you are never as bad
as you think, either” - mondta egyszer egy sokat tapasztalt
előadó. Mi magyarok főleg ennek az állításnak a második
feléről szoktunk elfeledkezni, a túlzott önbizalom helyett abba

a csapdába esünk, hogy túl kritikusak vagyunk magunkkal
szemben. Egy kezdő nyelvtanuló olyan, mint egy totyogó
kisgyerek. Örülünk neki, ha látjuk, hogy lépéseket próbál
tenni, és nem kérjük rajta számon, ha nem fut még úgy, mint
a nagyok, és azt sem, ha folytonosan bukdácsol is még.
3. Ne hidd el, hogy reménytelen eset vagy!
„Nekem nincs nyelvérzékem.” „Nem tudok, nem merek
megszólalni.” „Mindig elfelejtem, összekeverem, amit meg­
tanultam.” Hallottál már ilyen állításokat? Esetleg éppen a
saját szádból? Ne hidd el őket! Ha már az anyanyelveden
megtanultál beszélni, akkor van annyi „nyelvérzéked” , hogy
egy másik nyelven is meg fogsz tudni tanulni, az angol pedig,
különösen a kezdeti szakaszban, tényleg nem olyan hírhedten
nehéz nyelv. A beszédet pedig csak el kell kezdeni, ha nem
csinálod, nem fog menni, ha csinálod, akkor igen. És tényleg
nem számít, ha először még csak nyögve, dadogva, nehéz­
kesen, hibásan jön ki valami a szádon; gondolj csak megint a
totyogó kisgyerekre és inkább csak mosolyogj: „én beszélek
angolul, én, aki nem tudott, és valamit már sikerült elmonda­
nom valahogy!”
Ha pedig nagyon nem megy valami, akkor lehet, hogy nem jól
próbálkozol. Nézd meg ezért a következő két pontot.
4. Kérj tanácsot több helyről is!
Rengeteg módszer van, a nyelvtanulóknak pedig különféle tí­
pusai, eltérő tapasztalatokkal. Próbálkozz bátran, hogy neked
„mi jön be” . Ne zárd be magad „dobozokba” , ha úgy érzed,
valami nem fekszik neked, próbálkozz másképp.
5. Használj többféle segédanyagot is!
Minél többfélét, minél változatosabbat, mert a monotonitást
nem mindenki bírja jól, a változatosság pedig serkentőleg hat
az emberre. Legyen olyan tananyag is, amit alaposan áttanul­
mányozol, ami alapján rendszeresen haladsz előre, de olyan
anyagok is, amik inkább csak érdekesek, szórakoztatóak -
azok is bővítik a szókincsedet és segítenek abban, hogy kezdj
„ráérezni” az angolra.
6. Nem muszáj magolni a szavakat!
A magolás nem biztos, hogy a leghatékonyabb módszer,
igyekezz inkább konkrét helyzetekhez vagy akár képekhez,
érzelmekhez kötni a szavakat, a pszichológusok is megerősí­

7. Olyan nincs, hogy nincs időd!
Akármilyen elfoglalt is vagy, biztos van időnként néhány
perced - a buszon vagy a buszra várva, lefekvés előtt vagy
vacsora közben - tudod, már öt perc alatt is lehet tanulni...
És a sok kicsi sokra megy.
Szóval hogyan kezdj el nyelvet tanulni? Ahogy tudsz, ahogy
szeretnél, ahogy jólesik. Ne görcsölj a mikéntjén, ne azon
gondolkozz, hogy mi is a legjobb módszer. A lényeg, hogy
kezdj el tanulni, ne hagyd abba, ne add fel, és ha nem megy,
próbálkozz tovább és másképp. Kezdd el minden kudarc és
kihagyás után is újra. Végül biztosan nem fogod megbánni.
