Sajnos elérkeztünk a nyár utolsó hó­
napjához. Ha engem kérdezel, én azt
kívánnám, hogy egész évben legyen
nyár. Na jó, nem feltétlenül mindig
ilyen tikkasztóan meleg, mint mosta­
nában, de akkor is! Egy hosszú stran­
dolás vagy kirándulás után jólesik az
embernek egy kis olvasgatás a hús
lakásban vagy az árnyékban. Ebben
a hónapban is igyekeztünk érdekes
témákat találni neked, amelyek nem
csak szórakoztatóak, de hasznosan
lehet velük gyakorolni a nyelvet és
fejleszteni az angoltudásodat is.
Idén 60 éves a Guinness Rekordok
Könyve, így ez alkalomból elolvasha­
tod a kiadvány történetét, és néhány
híres rekordot is felidézünk. Egy
másik évforduló révén ellátogatunk
Salzburgba is, amely az idén 50 éves
Muzsika hangja című világhírű musi­
cal helyszíne.
Most is kínálunk recepteket, ezúttal olyan finomságokat gyűjtöttünk össze,

We are all curious, aren’t we? We want to know more and more about the world surrounding
us and with an adventurous spirit we are open to challenges. Challenges that are sometimes
silly, sometimes very difficult to meet. Some of them have some practical use; some of them
are just spectacular and have no practical significance. One thing is common in them: they are
all records of some kind and someone’s biggest achievement. We know about them because
at some point they were considered to be interesting and important enough to be included in a
book: The Guinness Book of Records which was first published sixty years ago.

criminologists, etymologists, gemmologists,

toxicologists, herpetologists, mycologists,
gerontologists etc. When writing to an expert the
McWhirters did not ask for a direct bit of information,
but stated a fact that they figured might be close
enough to being right and asked the expert to correct
it. “We found that people who have a total resistance
to giving information often have an irresistible desire to
correct other people’s impressions” - they stated.
The first edition, titled the Guinness Book of World
Records, debuted on 27th August, 1955. Interestingly
enough it had about the same number of records as
today’s volume, approximately 4,000. The book was
an instant hit. Some 50,000 copies were reprinted
and sold. Demand proved so high that the book
went through three more editions over the next 12
months. It was the first time anything of its kind had
ever been printed and no-one had any idea what a
global phenomenon they had on their hands. Over the
following decades, the book became a real bestseller,
selling more than 120 million copies in 37 languages in
a hundred countries.

Like many of the records in it, the book itself was the
result of an adventurous and daring spirit. In 1951, Sir
Hugh Beaver, the managing director of the Guinness
Brewery, went on a hunting trip with friends in Ireland.
Though he considered himself an excellent hunter, he
was unable to shoot any golden plovers. His pride
wounded, he suggested the bird might be the fastest in
Europe and that’s why he was so unsuccessful.
After returning from the trip, neither he nor his friends
were able to locate a reference book that provided the hook i
answer for them about the bird. It occurred to Sir Hugh
that there must be numerous other questions debated
nightly in the 81,400 pubs in Britain and in Ireland, but
there was no book with which to settle arguments

Georg von Trapp and Maria fall in love and get married.
Following the honeymoon, the whole family takes part
in a musical competition that cleverly disguises their
fleeing to Switzerland to avoid the coming war.
The musical is mostly based on the 1949 story written
by Maria von Trapp, although there are many changes
to suit a Hollywood movie. A visit to Salzburg is
the dream for a true “The Sound of Music” fan, but
travellers less interested in Maria’s adventures will find attachment to the von Trapp children. Later though

breathtaking Winkler Terrace. Sitting high up on
Monchsberg Hill, the terrace provides the best views of
Salzburg. The terrace is surrounded by a fortified wall
called the Burgerwehr built in the 15th century.
In the very center of Salzburg, von Trapp fans will
surely recognize the Residenz Square and Fountain
and the Baron sang “Edelweiss" in what is today the
Festival Hall Complex. Interestingly enough, originally it
was a Catholic priest who told the family to take part in
the singing competition and later became the family’s
musical director. Petersfriedhof is the cemetery where
the family hid from the Nazis, although the actual scene
was filmed in a Hollywood studio. The cemetery is
well worth a visit too: it still has a headstone from the
13th century and visitors can see the grave of Mozart’s
sister, Maria Ann.

The serene meadow is easily accessible by car or bus,
it is located next to the Schmidbachlehen Guest House.
The meadow is not the only natural backdrop that was
made famous in “The Sound of Music”. In the closing
scenes, the family looks up to the Untersberg Mountain
while singing “Climb Every Mountain” . Nowadays, you
don’t even need hiking gear to get to the top, since
visitors can ride in a cable car offering magnificent
views of the Rosittan Valley. From the cable car station
atop the mountain, you can hike to the Geiereck (1805
meters), visit the mountain climbers memorial, or walk
to the Salzburg Hochthron mountain (1856 meters).
In reality, the von Trapp family did not flee Austria by
foot. After informing their relatives and friends, they
managed to get on a train and travel to Italy and finally
to the United States, where they found their new home.
Salzburg’s history has been intertwined with the
history of music ever since its most famous son,
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was born in 1756. It is
quite easy to retrace his steps in the city as Salzburg
carefully cultivates the memory of Mozart: his
birthplace in Getreidegasse is a museum now, just like
the first floor of his second home in the city where he
lived before moving to Vienna. Famous exhibits include
his clavichord, the fortepiano and portraits and letters
of the Mozart family.
After (or before) satisfying your musical and historical
hunger, you can pop into one of Salzburg’s many cafés
and restaurants offering traditional favourites. If you
have a sweet tooth, Salzburger Knockerl is the dessert
for you. The soufflé is served with powdered sugar and
raspberry sauce and is so filling that it is also suitable
as a main course. Kasnocken (cheese dumplings)
sprinkled with fresh chives are a popular meal as are
freshwater fish, particularly trout. Wiener Schnitzel
is also available in all the Salzburg restaurants. The
meat is thinned with a mallet and fried with a coating
of flour, egg and breadcrumbs and it is usually served
with potatoes with parsley and fruit jam. If you just
fancy a quick bite with your beer, pretzel is the way to
go. Mozartkugel, this small, round confection made of
marzipan, nougat and dark chocolate, was originally
created by Paul Fürst in 1890. Nowadays, many
manufacturers produce them, and you can also buy the
original (and pricey) Fürst Mozartkugeln in Salzburg.
“The Sound of Music” locations and Mozart’s heritage
are two of the most well-known reasons to visit
Salzburg, but the city has a lot more to offer. With a
tourist-per-capita ratio higher than Venice or Florence,
the city is among the busiest places of Europe all year
round. But don’t be spooked by the flood of tourists: its
green parks, quaint cafés and the surrounding hills offer
a tranquil and refreshing experience.

For the dough:

- 500g packet white bread mix
- 2tbsp olive oil
For the filling:
- 140g carton green pesto
- 1/2 x 250g packet grated mozzarella
- 50g Parmesan or pecorino cheese, grated
- 50g black olives, sliced
- 50g green olives, sliced
- 50g sun-dried tomatoes in oil, drained

- Baking sheet, buttered

1. Make up the dough mix, following the

directions on the pack and adding the olive oil,
along with the recommended amount of water.
Knead the dough for 5-10 mins until it’s elastic.

2 . Roll dough out to a rectangle about 25 x

35cm on a lightly floured surface.

3 . Leaving one of the long edges clear, spread

the pesto over the dough. Scatter over the
cheeses, olives and sun-dried tomatoes. Brush
water along the clear edge, and then roll up the
dough towards the clear edge, pressing well
over the join.

4 . Cut the dough into 12 pieces. Place them

on their sides, so you can see the spiral
shapes and place them fairly close together on
the baking sheet, in a rectangle of 4 x 3 rows.

5. Cover the bread with a piece of oiled cling

film or a clean tea towel and leave in a warm
place for about 30 mins-1 hour or until doubled
in size and the rolls have joined together.

6 . Set the oven to Gas Mark 6 or 200C.

7. Remove the cling film or towel from the

dough. When the oven is hot, place the baking
sheet in the centre and bake dough for 20-30
mins, or until it’s an even golden colour and
firm to the touch. Slide on to a wire rack to
cool slightly. The rolls are best served warm on
the day of making.
Once cold, these rolls can be packed in a
freezer bag. Allow to defrost, then warm
through in a hot oven for a few mins and serve.

Demi Moore’s swimming pool, where he was found dead, a report said.
The 21-year-old victim had apparently drowned and was discovered

Neighbors claim that Moore’s three children have been throwing

Stacked one on top of the other, thousands of red
houses completely cover the hillside they are built
upon. Situated around 4000 metres above sea level,
these log cabins are the homes of thousands of
Buddhist monks and nuns. Photographer William Yu
spent time with them and photographed their daily lives
and their homes.
The 45-year-old said: “It’s an awesome experience to
photograph here, the landscape is shockingly beautiful
and unique. The people, most of them monks and
nuns, are friendly. It’s a remote place and tough to get
to, but worth all the efforts to be there. I wish I could
have stayed there longer. ”
William travelled to the Seda Larong Wuming Buddhist
Institute which is found in the Larung valley, Garze
Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, China, to get these

Two pilots have made history by
becoming the first father-daughter
team to fly together for their airline.
Senior First Officer Laura Elliott and
her dad Captain Peter Elliott took to
the skies together for the first time to
take passengers from Birmingham
to Tenerife. The pair, who both fly
for Thomas Cook, are now hoping to
make the daddy-daughter flight crew a
regular occurrence.
Laura said: “It’s a dream come true to be able to fly
with my Dad - even if he was still checking up on me!"
Laura, 30, from Birmingham, West Mids, didn’t plan
to follow in her father’s footsteps until Peter bought
her a trial flight for her 18th birthday. Although Laura
had joined Thomas Cook in 2009, she trained to fly on
Airbus planes and Peter flew Boeings so they never
flew together. When Laura took a career break and

Peter neared retirement, the pair thought it would be
too late for them to ever sit in the cockpit together. But
after Laura returned to the airline just a year later, and
Peter retrained to fly a new Airbus fleet, their dreams
became reality.
Laura said: “Becoming a pilot was never something I
had considered, even though Dad had been a pilot
since before I was born. It was only when my Dad
bought me a trial flight as a birthday present that I got
the bug. But I was already preparing to go to university
so I headed off to study sport and exercise science
like I’d always planned. It was only when I graduated
four years later that I considered following in my Dad’s
footsteps. I applied fora flying course and spent 14
months in southern Spain getting my license and then
started with Thomas Cook in 2009. Dad and I are
really similar - he hadn’t planned on being a pilot at
the beginning either and was an accountant before

retrained on the Airbus. It was only my second flight
back that it just popped up on the rota that we were
due to fly together, simply by chance. It was quite a
surprise because Dad’s based in Birmingham and my
base is East Midlands Airport, but when we realised I
was so pleased I’d finally get to fulfil my wish. When it
came to getting on the plane, I was really excited, but
also a bit nervous. Dad is one of the most senior pilots
in the company, and he’s been a training captain for
23 years. He kept asking if I was nervous! It is like the
feeling of having your Dad take you for a driving lesson.
Thankfully everything went smoothly and the passengers
loved it. If it ever happens again, I’ll definitely be a lot
more relaxed next time!"

Beautiful shades of blue. Sounds exciting? Sailing
can give you all. Sailing, also called yachting, has
been practised since ancient times as a means of
transport. In the modern sense, as a sport, yachting
probably originated in the Netherlands, and the word

International yacht racing began in 1851 when
members of the New York Yacht Club built
a schooner named America. The yacht was
sailed to England where it won a trophy called
the Hundred Guineas Cup. The trophy was
renamed The America’s Cup and it’s the oldest
trophy in sport.
Yachting made its Olympic debut in 1900 and
has appeared at every Olympic Games since
1908. It is one of the oldest sports on the Olympic
programme. Olympic sailing was first dominated
by bigger boats, sometimes with as many as IQ-
12 sailors. Starting from 1924 the trend has been
towards smaller boats with fewer crew members.
Learning the basics of sailing is easy, but
becoming an expert can take years. But once you
catch the feel of sailing you’ll want to learn it all.
Are you a beginner at sailing or would you like to
learn the basics now? Here are some tips for you
to follow:

1. Choose calm, uncrowded waters

If you’re just starting to learn how to sail, one
of the most important beginner sailing tips to
remember is to practise in conditions of light
winds and low traffic.

2. Begin on a boat rigged with one sail

A boat that’s rigged with just one sail will make
learning sailing basics less complicated.

3. Learn basic sailing terms.

Before you venture out on your first trip, be sure
to acquaint yourself with basic sailing terms.
Make sure you know the difference between port,
starboard, and other important concepts.

4. Capsize on purpose.
This may seem odd but it’s better to practise how
to handle a capsized sailboat within a controlled
environment, as opposed to an uncontrolled one.
We learn best from experience, and the valuable
sailing basics you’ll pick up from going through a
test-capsize in a small dinghy will serve you well
in the event of a real-life one.

5. Research tide, wind and weather

Check the weather forecast to be prepared for

/ On the 14th of August 1977, the King

of Rock and Roll died of a heart
attack at his Graceland home. The
singer was just 42 years old. If he had
lived, Elvis would have turned 80 this
year. To paraphrase Hemingway, the
death of Elvis happened “gradually
and then suddenly”. When he died, it
not only shook the USA, it shook the
world. Elvis had become an icon and
an important part of so many people’s
lives. A whole generation had grown
up, fallen in love, got married and had
children to the music of Elvis and then
he was gone at such a young age.
When he was buried, close to 90,000
people lined the funeral procession
from Graceland to the cemetery where
he was buried next to his mother. It
was the funeral of a King.

Elvis was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, in the heart of the

confederacy. Before Elvis, Tupelo was a town famous for
the 1936 flood, which killed over 200 people. His birth
brought both joy and tragedy, as his twin brother Jesse died
stillborn. His parents never had any more children. The event
would have a profound effect on Elvis.
Elvis grew up in relative poverty, which was quite the norm
for the Deep South, post-depression and post war. His father
spent eight months in prison for forging a cheque. As an only
child, Elvis was very close to his mother Gladys. In 1948, the

Lisa
Lisa Valerie Kudrow was born on July 30,1963 in
Encino, California. Her mother was a travel agent,
her father a physician. Her parents are both from
immigrant families from Belarus, Russia and Hungary.
She has an older sister and an older brother.
After graduating from a Los Angeles high school,
Kudrow received her BSc degree in Biology from
Vassar College. She worked in her father’s research
staff for eight years before becoming an actress. The
team studied the treatment of headaches.
She started her acting career as a comedic actress
in different sketch comedy groups. After appearing in
a few series and pilots, her first recurring television
role was Ursula Buffay, the eccentric waitress on the
NBC sitcom Mad About You. She would reprise this
character, and more importantly her twin sister, Phoebe
Buffay in the highly successful NBC sitcom, Friends
that ran for 10 years and is still her most remembered
and praised role. For her starring role as Phoebe
she won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a
Comedy Series, a Screen Actors Guild Award and
was nominated for a Golden Globe. She also became
the highest paid TV actress of all time (together with
Courtney Cox and Jennifer Aniston, her co-stars)
earning $1 million per episode for the last two seasons
of Friends.
Lisa Kudrow also appeared on the big screen with a
lot of success, mostly in comedic roles. She starred
opposite Oscar winner Mira Sorvino in Romy and
Michele’s High School Reunion (1997). In 2000 she
starred in the comedy-drama Hanging Up directed by
Diane Keaton opposite Keaton and Meg Ryan. She
also appeared in the gangster comedy films Analyze
This (1999) and Analyze That (2002) with Robert De
Niro and Billy Crystal. She also starred in dramatic

roles, such as in the biographical film on porn star
John Holmes, Wonderland,and in two films by director
Don Roos, The Opposite of Sex (1998) and Happy
Endings (2005). She also appeared in P. S. I Love You
with Hilary Swank, Gerard Butler and Kathy Bates in
2007, and as a school counselor in Easy A (2010), a
romantic high school comedy with Emma Stone.
Her most recent roles include three successful TV
series. The Comeback premiered in 2005 and had
its second series in 2014 with a possible season
3 in a couple of years. Web Therapy premiered on
Showtime in 2011 and is on its fourth series now.
Kudrow also had a recurring role in the fourth season
of the highly successful drama series Scandal as
Montana Congresswoman Josephine Marcus in a
multi-episode arc. She also reunited with Friends
co-star Courtney Cox in Cougar Town in 2009 as an
accomplished dermatologist.
Lisa Kudrow was an executive producer for the
American version of the originally British television
series Who Do You Think You Are? for NBC. The
actress first saw the series while filming PS. I Love
You in Ireland and was immediately hooked. The
show follows celebrities tracing their family trees.
Kudrow was also a subject of the first season and it
was discovered that her great-grandmother died in the
Holocaust. She also discovered family connections
and a cousin living in Poland.
Lisa married Michel Stern, an advertising executive, in
1995. Their son, Julian Murray was born in 1998. The
family lives in Los Angeles. Her view of her own life is
quite straightforward and admirable: “I found the right
man, got married, and just had to keep not reinventing
myself, just deciding that it doesn’t matter what you are
if you are a good person. ”

magazine that you are interested in reading,
it is a great motivator to broaden your
vocabulary too.

How to Have a Healthy Diet
Drink more water. Adult humans should drink 2-3 liters of water per
day. That is in addition to things like tea and coffee. Water keeps
bodies at the correct temperature and removes toxins that are the
inevitable result of metabolism and industrial life. You’ll be healthier
automatically. Water also clears your skin, helps your kidneys, helps
to control your appetite, and keeps you energized. It also keeps
you from drinking unhealthy beverages like soda and juice, which
are high in calories. The body barely registers the intake of these
unhealthy drinks and yet you still feel thirsty hundreds of calories
later. If you need the taste, splash some lemon, lime, or 100% juice
into your water. However, be sure that you eat plenty of calcium-rich
foods, such as broccoli, to support healthy bones as you grow older.
Eat breakfast. A light, healthy breakfast is sufficient enough to reap
the benefits of eating early. If it’s comprised of lean protein and
whole grains, then it will keep you from gorging at lunch. Research
shows that breakfast-skippers actually eat more! So, to curb your
appetite, don’t skip the first meal of the day. Instead of two choco­
late doughnuts and a coffee that’s more cream than anything else,
opt for eggs, fruit, and for a beverage, skimmed milk, fresh orange

cials urge
Public health officials have urged employers to allow staff to travel
outside of rush hour to avoid overheating on crowded public trans­
port as Britain faces the hottest day of the decade. The heatwave
has already triggered a level two alert but it could reach level three on
Wednesday as temperatures rise to 35C.
Public Health England (PHE) has urged people to look out for the
elderly, young children, pregnant women and those with serious ill­
nesses who could be badly affected by the heat. Commuter trains are
likelier to be busier than usual as Network Rail began imposing speed
restrictions over fears the track would buckle in the soaring heat.
Dr Angie Bone, head of extreme events at PHE, said: “Employers
should ensure indoor areas are kept cool and consider allowing these
individuals to travel to or from their place of work during cooler, or
less busy times of the day. For those working or exercising outdoors,
strenuous physical exertion during the hottest part of the day should
be kept to a minimum.”
The highest recorded July temperature was at Wisley, Surrey,
in 2006, peaking at 36.5C. A level 3 alert - one below a national
emergency - is triggered when the Met Office confirms a 90 per cent

you’ll feel throughout the day and the more you won’t need to eat
later in the day.
Eat well throughout the day. If half of your plate is vegetables and
fruit, you’re on the right track. Add in lean protein, low-fat dairy, and
whole grains. Once a steady eating pattern has been established,
your body will feel more comfortable. There may be a period of time
when your body is wondering where the sugary foods went, but
once you’re over the hump, you’ll feel better than ever. Remember
that not all fats are bad for you. Good fats can be found in oily fish
like salmon and tuna, avocados, nuts, and olive oil. These are es­
sential to a well-balanced diet.
Read the labels. Processed foods get a bad rap, and often for good
reason. However, you’ve got to choose your battles. That frozen
bag of broccoli isn’t nearly as bad as that boxed mac and cheese. In
short, avoid processed foods when you can — but if you can’t, read
the labels and watch for added bad stuff: salt, sugar, and fat. Food
that stays on the shelves often has added sodium, words that end
in -ose, and trans and saturated fats in the ingredient list. If you see
these on the label (especially if they’re in high amounts), avoid them.
You can find a healthier alternative elsewhere. It’s not worth it.

Charity Asthma UK say they have seen a rise in calls and social me­

Barber from the British Lung Foundation Helpline added: “During
hot weather, the air we breathe has lower moisture levels than usual,
which can have a drying effect on our airways. As a result, people
with respiratory conditions such as severe asthma may find it harder
to breathe, feel more tired, or find their lungs feeling heavy or tight.”
Storms cause mould and pollen spores to be swept up high into
the air where the moisture breaks them into smaller pieces. As the
broken spores settle asthma suffers can breathe them in where they
travel into the smaller airways of the lungs causing irritation triggering
breathlessness and other symptoms.
Storms are likely to hit the southern half of the country at the week­
end, as temperatures are set to reach their peak tomorrow before
easing off on Thursday.

An untouched Paradise in
Turkey’s Butterfly Valley
Located on Turkey’s famous, 500km Lycian Way and only accessible
by water, the 86,000sqm Butterfly Valley is home to roughly 100 spe­
cies of butterflies, including the endemic orange, black and white Jer­
sey Tiger. A waterfall that cascades from the 350m-high back canyon
wall eventually becomes a gentle river, watering the lavender-flowered
native chaste trees, the butterflies’ natural habitat. The Turkish gov­
ernment named the valley a preservation area in 1987 to protect the
butterflies and local flora.
The nearby Oludeniz, which translates as Blue Lagoon, remained
virtually unknown until travellers began camping there in the 1980s.
Today, it’s a particularly depressing example of paradise lost. The
town is filled with neon lights and English-themed restaurants. The
sea is dotted with faux-pirate ships and booze cruises. The beach is
marred with drunken, sunburned tourists, and the clear skies are pol­
luted with seemingly infinite paragliders launching from the surround­
ing green mountains.
In contrast, the Anatolia Tourism Development Cooperative bought
Butterfly Valley from the villagers of Faralya in 1981 and opened it
for tourism in 1984. Three years later, when the government deemed
the valley a national preservation area, the cooperative outlawed the
construction of permanent buildings. Today, they allow only tents and
ramshackle bungalows, and they’ve focused on natural growth as op­
posed to commercial. Olives, pomegranates, lemons, oranges, grapes,
walnuts, peaches, apricots, palm, oleander and laurel all thrive here.

to those who are willing to spend the night under the stars, living
gloriously free of the more luxurious conveniences of Oludeniz.
At one end of the beach, the temporary residents often sat at a bar
built into the rocks, sipping beers and, late in the day, watching the
sun set. At the other end, under the canopy of the Fish Restaurant’s
thatched roof, travellers take a break from the heat while enjoying
grilled seafood fresh from the water. Next door, a booth with air tanks
and wetsuits serves as an improbable dive shop.
For some, Butterfly Valley is a yearly retreat, a place to escape their
busy city lives for a few weeks or months. For others, it’s just a one­
time visit to a spot that seems to operate outside of time. Minutes
turn into hours and hours turn into days. You could be anywhere in
the world, but in this age, it’s hard to believe Butterfly Valley exists
anywhere at all.

Christie’s, said contemporary artists were exploring life today and
collectors want that. Oliver Barker, Sotheby’s senior international
specialist in contemporary art, said the newer buyers were more
engaged with the culture of our times.

Study for a Pope I (1961), which set an auction record for the artist
when it last came to market in 2005, sold by the late art collector
Gunter Sachs. Back then, it sold for £5.8m, while the estimate today is
£25m-35m - still some way short of the new Bacon record of £89.3m.
Speaking about Bacon, Barker said: “[He] speaks to the soul. He
captured what it means to be human like no other artist that came
before or after. His portraits are sought by collectors from all corners
of the globe because they express something universal, exploring the
deepest psychological depths of the human mind.”

celebrate both. This month we are looking at the topic of school from the beginning to the
end: from choosing a school for a six-year-old to taking part in a graduation ceremony. Three

on learning. I would like a teacher for him who is kind,
intelligent, loves children, has a good sense of humour
and can be strict when it is needed. I know I ask for a lot
but I would like the best for Peter.
Man: So we should start looking around. There are quite a lot of
good schools in this town.
Woman: Yes, but distance is also an important factor. I would not
like him to travel a lot. It is very tiring and takes a lot of time.
Time is very precious and I’d rather he spent the afternoons
playing and having fun and not travelling.
Man: OK: I’ll check out the schools nearby first on the Internet
then we can start visiting them. Personal impressions are
always vital. And we should also take Peter with us.
Woman: Of course. After all, he will spend most of his days in school
from September on so it’s just right to let him decide what is
suitable for him and which teacher he likes.

This month’s article is about young Hungarian businessmen, living and working in
Hungary, who are highly successful in the business world. The common feature in their
career is that there was a certain point when they had an original idea and also had the
courage to act on it. They put it into practice by generously investing their time, energy
and finances and finally it brought them success both financially and professionally.

Péter Arvai created Prezi which has rapidly become
widely used and world famous. Tivadar Limbacher
is the founder of Ma este Színház!, the last minute
online theatre ticket selling agency, while Ádám
Zeitler operates Milestone Institute to help Hungarian
secondary school students to prepare for studying at
universities abroad. All three of them are young and
successful. It’s certainly interesting to take a look at
how they have achieved their goals. Their example
could be a model for others to follow.
Péter Árvái
Prezi’
Prezi is a cloud-based presentation software and
storytelling tool for presenting ideas on a virtual
canvas. The product employs a zooming user interface
(ZUI), which allows users to zoom in and out of their
presentation media allowing them to pan and zoom,
and to size, rotate or edit an object. The user places
objects on a canvas and navigates between videos,
images, texts and other presentation media. Frames
allow grouping of presentation media together as
a single presentation object. Prezi was officially
established in 2009 in order to replace ordinary slide-
based presentations e.g. powerpoints. The word
‘prezi’ is the Hungarian short form of presentation. The
company was founded by Péter Árvái, Péter Halácsy
and Ádám Somlai-Fischer. The latter two were working

on a “zooming presentation” concept in 2008, and
Péter Árvái met them to talk shop. “I was so inspired
by the idea that we could help share world changing
stories that I convinced them to quit their full-time
jobs, and we started working on the Prezi concept
immediately,” he said.
Péter Árvái the cofounder and CEO of Prezi was born
in Sweden. His parents are Hungarian. He studied
economics and business in Sweden. He lived and
worked in Budapest, Tokyo, Stockholm, Singapore
and San Francisco. He says that his home is where his
friends live. He speaks Swedish, English, Japanese and
Hungarian fluently. In his free time he does yoga and
likes cooking and has started to write a cookery book
about Japanese cuisine.
His company provides extraordinary circumstances for
the 240 people he employs in Budapest, San Francisco
and Seoul. There are no set working hours, and his
employees don’t work in ordinary offices. There are big
community spaces with bean bags in the Prezi building
and free food and drinks are available for everyone
throughout the day. Team building is also special. His
employees don’t go to expensive wellness hotels but
rather use their time for helping others, doing charity.
They do a two-day renovation project as a company
each year just outside Budapest. As part of this project
Prezi employees helped for example gypsy people
renovating some of their houses in Bag.
Péter Árvái thinks that there are three elements needed
for success: a good, innovative idea, hard work and a
bit of luck.
Tivadar Limbacher
The Story of 'Ma este Színház!’
‘Ma este Színházi’ was founded to sell last
minute theatre tickets half price on the day of the
performance online. Tivadar Limbacher and his best
friend Attila Szabadkai the two cofounders of the
company came up with the idea of their invention
while brainstorming ideas enjoying a bottle of wine
one evening in February 2011.
There had been no last minute theatre tickets market in
Budapest before, so they created it. The idea of selling
last minute theatre tickets online was quite unique,
not just in Hungary but in a worldwide aspect as well.
People and theatres seemed to love their service
almost from the beginning as people in general like to
go to the theatre, but most of them don’t like to buy
theatre tickets well in advance. As for the theatres,
they don’t like half empty auditoriums. It’s better to
fill the auditoriums with theatre goers buying half price
tickets than to play to a half empty place, so almost
every theatre in Hungary joined ‘Ma este Színház!’. The

better future at home in Hungary. Milestone Institute

Mikor menj el nyelwizsgázni? Dezsényi István és Salánki Ágnes

Természetesen akkor, ha már eleget tudsz, és, ha szükséged van a bizonyítványra. Bár
az is előfordulhat, hogy a nyelvvizsgázással egyszerűen csak szeretnél kitűzni magad
elé egy célt a nyelvtanulás során. Reális képet szeretnél kapni a tudásodról, vagy arra is
gondolhatsz, hogy egyszer még jól jöhet a nyelvvizsga-bizonyítvány, és nem a körülmé­
nyek kényszerítenek a vizsgázásra. De honnan tudhatod, hogy már eleget tudsz? Van,
aki úgy gondolja, hogy megpróbálja, és azután majd kiderül, hogy valóban eleget tud-e,
és legfeljebb nem sikerül a vizsga. A tudásszinted felmérésére és tapasztalatok szer­
zésére ez a hozzáállás is jó lehet, de a legtöbben azért nem szeretünk megbukni egy
vizsgán, és amennyire lehet, igyekszünk biztosra menni. Hogyan lehet hát előre megy-
győződni arról, hogy már nyugodtan elmehetsz vizsgázni?

 USEFUL INFORMATION
Az írásbeli vizsgákhoz általában megtalálható egy feladatsor
az adott vizsgarendszer honlapján, illetve léteznek könyvek is
mintafeladatokkal, a vizsgára felkészítő anyagokkal. Ezeket
megoldva képet kaphatsz arról, hogy hogyan sikerülne élesben
teljesíteni a vizsgán. Érdemes arra is figyelni, hogy a könyv
feladatai valóban „eredetiek-e” , vagyis az adott vizsgarend-
szerből származnak-e. Ha igen, akkor bízhatsz benne, hogy
terjedelmükben, nehézségi fokukban és jellegükben is olya­
nok, amilyenekkel a vizsgán találkozhatsz majd, és nem csak
„utánzatok” , ahol a név ugyan utal a vizsgára, de mivel a kiadó,
a szerző nem kapcsolódik az adott vizsgarendszerhez, előfor­
dulhat, hogy nem sikerül jól bemérniük a követelményeket, és
az éles vizsgafeladatokhoz valóban hasonló feladatokat készí­
teniük. Vagyis figyelj oda erre is, hogy a feladatok jól irányítsa­
nak a vizsgával kapcsolatban, és ne vezessenek félre.
Tájékozódj arról is, hogy lehet-e szótárt használni a vizsgán,
ha igen, melyik vizsgarészekhez, és mennyi idő áll rendelkezé­
sedre a feladatok megoldásához. Amikor otthon nekikezdesz
megoldani a mintafeladatokat, érdemes, amennyire lehet, olyan
körülményeket kialakítani magadnak, mint a vizsgán. Ülj le egy
csendes helyre, ahol nem zavar senki. Legyen előtted egy óra,
amivel méred az időt, és megszakítás nélkül próbáld megol­
dani a feladatokat. Ha szünetet tartasz, felállsz közben esze­
getni, zenét hallgatsz, stb., lehet, hogy jobban érzed magad
és könnyebben tudsz figyelni. A vizsgán azonban meglepetést
okozhat, hogy más körülmények között nem megy olyan jól a
feladatok megoldása, mint otthon, mert egy idő után már nem
tudsz jól figyelni, koncentrálni. Az is fontos, hogy nyomtatott
szótárt használj, még akkor is, ha az elektronikus szótárak
használatához vagy szokva, számítógépen vagy telefonon. A
vizsgákon ezek általában nem használhatók, a nyomtatott szó­
tárak használatát pedig valószínűleg késő lesz ott a helyszínen
megtanulni és megszokni, ezért tanácsos ezt előbb elkezdeni.
Még ha sikerül is az igazi vizsgakörülményeket a lehető legjob­
ban modellezni, előfordulhat, hogy a vizsgán jobban izgulsz,
mint otthon, könnyebben megijedsz a nehézségektől, és ez
negatívan befolyásolhatja a teljesítményedet. Tehát, ha az ott­
honi vizsga kiértékelésénél úgy látszik, hogy éppen csak elérted
a megfelelési szintet, akkor azt tekintsd biztatásnak, hogy már
akár sikerülhet is a vizsga, de ne következtess belőle arra, hogy
már mehetsz is vizsgázni. Érdemes még egy kicsit készülni és
gyakorolni, addig, amíg egy olyan szintet sikerül elérned, amikor
már határozottan és többszöri próbálkozásra is meghaladod
a megfelelési határt. Ez ugyanis kellő magabiztosságot adhat
még akkor is, ha a félénkebbek közé tartozol, és hajlamos
vagy a „pánikolásra” . Jó, ha úgy tudsz nekivágni a vizsgának,
hogy ha az éles vizsgahelyzetben zavarba ejtő nehézségekbe
ütközöl, akkor sem esel kétségbe, mert meggyőződtél arról,
hogy már „bőven” fölötte vagy a megfelelési határnak, és tudsz
annyit, hogy abba még az is belefér, ha nem jön ki olyan jól a
lépés, mint szokott. Vannak feladatok, amiket egyedül is jól
lehet ellenőrizni, mert a megoldás a megfelelő betű, válasz vagy
szó kiválasztásából áll. Mások viszont szöveges válaszokat
igényelnek. Ilyenkor, ha saját magad ellenőrződ a megoldáso­
dat, legyél inkább óvatos, és ha a válasz nem teljesen jó, vagy
hiányos, inkább ne tekintsd helyesnek, és csak akkor fogadd el,
ha a válasz teljes, tökéletes, vagy ha a hibák és a hiányosságok

HASZNOS INFORMÁCIÓ
Az írásbeli megoldását - a levélírástól, a fogalmazásoktól elte­
kintve - könnyebb ellenőrizni tanár segítsége nélkül is, mint a
szóbelit, és ez igaz a hallás utáni értést mérő feladatokra is. Ott
is igyekezz a tudásod és a teljesítményed felmérésénél imitálni a
vizsgakörülményeket; és tájékozódj arról is, hogy hányszor lehet
meghallgatni a hangfelvételt, és mennyi idő van a megoldásra.
A szóbeli készségeid felmérésénél már elengedhetetlenebb
egy tanár - vagy legalábbis az angolban járatos beszélő -
segítsége. Ha a tudásod biztosan, határozottan meghaladja
az adott szint elvárásait, akkor különösebb készülés nélkül is
bátran nekifuthatsz a vizsgának. Ha azonban nem ilyen egyér­
telmű a helyzet, akkor megnő a szerepe a tudatos készülésnek.
Annak például, hogy az egyes témákat előre kidolgozod. Ha
olyan vizsgát választasz, amely lehetőséget nyújt a személyes
jellegű beszélgetésre, vagyis arra, hogy részletesen beszélj sa­
ját magadról, akkor érdemes erre erősen felkészülni. Ilyenkor,
még ha a tudásod alapján némileg bizonytalan, „kétesélyes”
lenne is a próbálkozásod, hogy átmenj a vizsgán, átlendíthet
ezen a tudatos, célirányos készülés, így legjobb fényben tudod
bemutatni a tudásodat. Érdemes tehát a vizsga előtti „célegye­
nesben” , amikor már elérted vagy legalábbis megközelítetted
az elérendő szintet, a célra összpontosítva így „hajrázni” .
Előfordulhat, hogy valaki túl hamar megy el vizsgázni, mert
nem elég óvatos, de az is, hogy túlzottan óvatos és „túltanul­
ja” , „túlkészüli” az adott szintet, és nem kellett volna annyit
várnia a jelentkezéssel, vagy akár egy magasabb szinten is
próbálkozhatott volna.
Vizsgáztatóként többször okoz fejtörést az olyan vizsgázók ér­
tékelése, akikre azt mondhatnánk, hogy már „egész jók, egész
ügyesek” , de vannak még hiányosságaik, javítani kellene még
a szókincsüket, erősíteni a magabiztosságukat, amire egy-két
hónap elég is lehetne, de külső körülmények nyomására, türel­
metlenségből vagy tájékozatlanságból már eljöttek vizsgázni,
így apró tényezőkön vagy némileg a szerencsén múlik, hogy le­
verik-e a lécet vagy sikerül-e valahogy éppen átugraniuk. Tehát
nem jó, ha túlzottan sietünk, és egy másik szóképet használva,
„éretlenül” akarjuk leszüretelni munkánk gyümölcsét.
Másrészt persze vannak olyanok is, akik ezzel ellentétben a
dolgok halogatására hajlamosak. Az ilyen típusú nyelvtanuló
mindig azt fogja érezni, hogy még mindig nem tud eleget -
mert mint tudjuk, a nyelvtanulás (is) egy véget nem érő folya­
mat. Természetesen jó, ha valaki minél alaposabban felkészül a
vizsgára, de egy ponton túl a halogatásnak már nincs értelme.
A félelmet nem azzal lehet legyőzni, hogy az ember a tökéletes
szintre próbálja emelni a tudását és a készségeit, hanem azzal,
hogy meggyőződik róla, hogy ha nem is tud mindent, az adott
szintet már elérte, ismeri a vizsgán rá váró kihívásokat, ezért
nincs mitől félnie.
Tudjuk, a legtöbben azért így is izgulni fognak a vizsga előtt - és
közben is. Ha nagyon izgulós típus vagy, dönthetsz úgy is, hogy
elmész egy próbavizsgára az adott vizsgaközponthoz, ahol tét
nélkül kipróbálhatod, hogy milyen a vizsga, és még értékelést,
hasznos tanácsokat is kaphatsz a próbavizsga után.
Tehát, mielőtt nekivágnál a nyelvvizsgának, beszéld ezt meg ta­
národdal - akár több tanár tanácsát is kérheted, ha lehetőséged
van rá -, és gondold át a fentieket. Tanulj, készülj, dönts, és ha
már döntöttél, akkor, mint egy jó sportoló, koncentrálj az előtted
levő feladatra - és a sikerre! Sokaknak már sikerült. Neked is fog!
