In this class we will use the personal pronouns and the verb to be to give personal information
and talking about hobbies and interests. Also we will make a small activity from the book American
File 1.

Personal pronouns
A personal pronoun is a simple substitute for the proper name of a person.

The verb to be: am /is /are
The verb to be is used to say something about a person, thing or state of things to show a
permanent or temporary quality state of things job or occupation.

The verb to be goes after mentioning a personal pronoun either its positive form or the negative
one.

Positive form: Negative form

I am a good student I am not a good student


He / She/ It is in Spain. He / She/ It is not in Spain.
You /They / We are doctors. You /They / We are not doctors.

Verb to be with prepositions: a / in / from / at / adj + with

4. Karen is good at practicing sports.
5. Sarah is good with table games.

For talking about someone’s age and someone’s occupation we also use the verb to be, and it is
done by using the combination of words years old after the verb to be.

Examples to express age:

Maria is 24 years old. María tiene 24 años.


I am 20 years old. Yo tengo 20 años.

Examples to express someone’s occupation.

Karen is a nurse in a hospital Karen es una enfermera en un hospital


I am a fashion designer. Yo soy un diseñador de modas.

Examples to express ability of not expertise

Katy is good at playing video games. Katy es buena jugando video juegos
Susane is not good with mathematics. Susane no es buena con matemáticas.

A good profession
Studying a profession can be good for you and your future. When you study a profession you may be have
more opportunities to get a better job, which means that you can have a more economy level in your life. Also,
being a nurse, a medical podiatrist, or a medical doctor and working in a hospital can be a good option to
contribute to your society needs. I am a medical doctor and I like to help others to cure people.
