Q1.1: requirement: v < 0; a > 0
(a,v on the same direction, they increase in speed)
A. constant  a = 0 (crossed out)
B. –x direction  v < 0 / increase in speed  a < 0 (crossed out)
C. +x direction  v > 0 / increase in speed  a > 0 (crossed out)
D. –x direction  v < 0 / decrease in speed  a > 0 (choose)
E. +x direction  v > 0 / decrease in speed  a < 0 (crossed out)
D

Q1.2:
Highest point means v = 0(m/s)
m
Acceleration is equal to the gravitational force exerted on the object  a = g = 9,8( 2
¿
s
g has downward direction  C is the answer

Q1.3:
h = 4m; g = constant = 9,8 m/s2
A

Q1.4:
Objects stated everywhere in the world have the same gravitational force, which means the same acceleration.
C

Q1.5:
Wrong. The instantaneous velocity can be zero.
We have the formulas:

; .
We see the average velocity depends on the stretch of roads and time traveled whereas the latter one counts on
the acceleration exerted on it.
Example given: A car travelling for 2 hours in a roads with 90km in length, but on the half way, the car has
been broken down. Therefore, the instantaneous velocity is equal to zero while the other is equivalent to non-
zero.
Q1.6: the given average velocity is 40mph
Situation 1: 30 mins at first with 30mph then 30 mins at 50mph.
At situation 1, we have the car travel in the same period of time during the two phases, but the velocity varies.
We can sketch out it by the diagram:

Situation 2: 15 miles at 30mph then 15 miles at 50mph.

At situation 2, we have the car travel in the same stretch of road during the two phases, but the velocity varies.
We can sketch out it by the diagram:

Therefore, we can predict that the first situation can get the average velocity at 40mph because:
+ The first stretch of road the car travel is shorter than the latter one.
+ Then the driver boost the car’s velocity, which means that the higher the velocity, the faster the car travel in
both situations.
+ Jump to conclusion, the end of the road which is reached by the second situation will be sooner than the first
one because of its higher velocity.
=> There is by no means the situation 2 will reach the 40mph on average.
Compare to situation 1, which is on the contrary
=> It is possible that the car in situation 1 reaches the average velocity at 40mph.

Q1.7:

We have the formulas: (with the free-fall phenomenon) and (with the throw-away
event)
a. Both the ball thrown down and the free-fall ball will have the same acceleration because they’re both exerted
by the gravitational force.
b. The both two balls will have equal velocities. Explanation:
+ In accordance with the phenomenon, the throw-up ball will have the same event when it reaches its highest
point  it becomes a free-fall ball as the first one.

Q1.8:
Time for the two bikes staying in the same position: (We have the two riders in the opposite direction)
S1 + S2 = S
v1.t + v2.t = 20  t.(10+10) = 20  t = 1(h)
We have the distance the bee travels: S = v.t = 30.1 = 30(km)

Suggested answers for problems:

Problem 1.1: We have 50km/h = 14m/s; 120km/h = 33,6m/s (according to the notes given)
The formula:

Problem 1.2:
The initial velocity equals to zero.

We have:

The time taken:

Problem 1.3:
v0 = 75km/h = 21m/s (as the notes given) a = -0,5 m/s2 (because the driver slows down the car)
a. We have:

b. The time taken:

c. The distance traveled during the 1st sec and the 5th sec.

= S5 – S4 =

= S1 – S0 =
Problem 1.4:
We have: h = 120cm = 1,2m. Let g = 10m/s2.
Choose the positive side in harmony with the direction of the object’s velocity ( a = -g )

Because the stretch of road the object travels means 2 times of the time “t”
 T = 2t = 2.0,5 = 1(s)
Problem 1.5:
We hear the water striking the ground at 2,5 sec, which means the time travel of water then reflects to your ears
is 2,5 sec.

 2,5(s)
We have: h = 1,8m
Let g = 10m/s2
Let the nozzle be the initial point.
We have: y0 = 0
 y = -1,8m
1 2
Formula: y = y0 + vot + gt
2
-1,8 = 0 + v0.2,5 + ½ .(-10).2,52 => vo = 11,78m/s

--- The end ---
