Evaluating Multimedia

Background Information for Learners

Undeniably, the Internet is a vast ocean of knowledge and information that you can use for
numerous purposes. Specifically, for you as a student, the Internet is a big help. You can find data,
explanations of the concepts, video tutorials, research papers, and many more things that help you gain
knowledge and understanding about a lot of things. To sum it up, learning has become easier for you.
But in the millions of news and information found in the internet every day, not all are credible
and useful. Because of this, we need to analyze and evaluate the content of the multimedia that we are
consuming.
Selecting Criteria
In evaluating a multimedia product, there are two major aspects that are of main importance-
these are technology and content. Below is a chart listing key questions for each of the sub criteria
that can be used in evaluating multimedia:
TECHNOLOGY
Form/Style What are the elements(text, sounds, images, animation, etc.) used?
Do the elements help in conveying the message?
Do the elements follow the different principles of design? Is it pleasing to the eyes?
Medium/Format Is it easy to use?
Are the instructions easy to use?
CONTENT
Target
Audience Who are the possible users?
What aspects of the users are to be considered?(language barrier, reading ability
  level,
persons with disability, cultural differences, etc.)
Sender/Author Who is the author? How credible is the author?
Key content What is the tone ( informative, encouraging, entertaining, etc. )
of the multimedia product? Is the information correctly presented?
Purpose Does it meet the objective of the topic?
Dimensions of Critical Evaluation
According to Coiro (2017), students need to be critical in viewing online information having
noticed that for them content relevance is more important than content credibility. As a result, students
become agents of misinformation. That is the reason why students need to learn to make reasoned
judgments about the overall quality of information on a website benefit from clear definitions and
discussion of these dimensions:
Relevance: the information’s level of importance to a particular reading purpose or explicitly stated
need for that information
Accuracy: the extent to which information contains factual and updated details that can be verified
by consulting alternative and/or primary sources
Bias/Perspective: the position or slant toward which an author shapes information
Reliability: the information’s level of trustworthiness based on information about the author and
the publishing body

Learning Competency

Evaluate a creative multimedia form (living museum, electronic portfolio, others).
