THE FUTURE OF ENGLISH

English is a global language. In the current era of globalization, English is the language used
to communicate around the world. In English, there are 3 types of people who use English in
various countries, the first is people who speak English as a first language (L1), the second is
people who speak English as an additional or second language (L2) and there are also people
who learn it as foreign language (EFL).

For the first type of people who speak English because that language is their mother tongue,
for example, British, American and Australian. English is divided into two types, namely UK
English and US English, both of which have differences in dialect and vocabulary. Australia
is a mixed of the two types of language. The second type, characterized by sparse colonial
settlements in nglish keeping the precolonial population in conquest and allowing some of
them access to learn English as a second language, In addition Netherlands, a country that is
famous for its Ferris wheel, is a country where the most people use English as their second
language, Dutch citizens can at least speak 2 or even 3 languages, namely Dutch and English,
not even a few who speak German and there is also India, Pakistan, Italy etc who used nglish
language as their second language ( L2). The third type is that some countries use English as
a foreign language including Indonesia, Jamaica, Africa, etc.

Making English the world’s language makes people think that with the involvement of many
global economies English will be eliminated, but in reality English is quite difficult to replace
with other languages. Because English has been spread as a world language not only through
political initiatives, major financial institutions have been established in the 20th century,
again after World War II and with great American involvement. Since the US economy is
growing rapidly, overtaking the UK, and achieving the dominant economic position in the
world. As a result, American culture became much more influential around the world. The
economic shape is rapidly changing and it is affecting the surrounding countries such as Asia
it will make the proportion of wealth created and spent by the west will decline sharply in the
decades and will change the economic attractiveness of other language majors.

Not only that, English also provides extensive knowledge and information, therefore many
people want to learn English to get information in the field they are interested in. Usually
people who can speak English can speak other languages or are multilinguals.

In the 21st century, English has become a very important language to learn, because now we
have entered the era of globalization, that is a global process, where to reach all affairs that
include the development of the times, namely modernization has increased. Where people
from other countries can work in our country, and also has an accelerated exchange of
information, culture, and trade, so learning English is a must, even English is a compulsory
subject in schools in some countries. Entering the era of globalization which requires every
individual to prepare reliable resources, especially in the field of science and technology. In
order to be able to master technology well, adequate knowledge is needed so that we can use
it in facing the demands of a globalized world that is full of competition. In this case, the role
of English is very necessary both in mastering technology and interacting directly. As a
means of global communication, English should be actively mastered both orally and in
writing. As the world’s social language, English is not only a global communication medium,
English is also an academic need whose mastery is in the language aspect. Even before
entering the 21st century English has been used in several countries.

Because we are now in the 21st century, namely the era of globalization, the world of
economy and culture is increasing in terms of becoming increasingly interconnected and
interdependent, politically and technologically.

Long before the use of English, it has a long history in the world, there are two historical
mechanisms for the spread of English, including the first was the colonial expansion of
Britain which, in settlements of English speakers in many parts of the world. This has
provided a diasporic base for the language which is probably a key factor in the adoption of a
language as a lingua franca. In the 20th century, the role of the US has been more important
than that of Britain and has helped ensure that the language knowledge, but also leads
consumer culture.

In recent years English has become the lingua franca for economics and business in English
until today, in 1988, for example, the Danish Council of Trade and Industry reported that
English is used by Danish companies in more than 80% of business contacts and international
communications (cited in Firth, 1966).

By 2050 English is predicted to cover a huge fortune of $250 trillion, average world growth
at 4% in total. Compared to the proportion of world wealth in 1990 of $25% trillion in total.
This shows that in the next 60 years it is undeniable that the proportion of world wealth will
be increased in 2050 and the difference in total wealth is around 225$ trillion. The key to
understanding the future of business English will lie in the extent to which other languages
are becoming important trading lingua franca for internal commerce in Latin America and
Latin.

In conclusion, studying English in the current era is very important for our lives in the future
due to the era of globalization which requires us to understand languages from other countries
so that later we can compete with outsiders, especially in the field of technology and
information science.  English is the most widely spoken language in the world, and is also the
mother tongue used by more than 400 million people spread all over the world, the use of
English in the international world is used in everyday environments and also when working
in social life. And also English is used almost all over the world, especially with countries
that have bilateral relations, the only language used as a liaison language is English. In the
current era of globalization, the development of the world is increasingly dynamic, starting
from the development of free trade, as well as the establishment of several foreign-owned
companies in Indonesia, which makes the use of international languages such as English
increasingly important for us to master.
