Reflection

Writing can be many different things for many different people. It can be their job, their way

of communication, their therapy, and much more. I would say that’s kind of the basis of my

theory that I apply to myself and others as well. Writing has always been something that I didn’t

enjoy. It was always something I had to do because of school, which kind of took the fun out of

it. My writing can change with every piece I write. Writing holds no rules, and it can as flexible

as it wants to be. Depending on the type of writing you are doing, it can be analytic or creative.

There is always a piece of the writing because writing comes from your heart and your mind.

Before joining this class, I hadn’t really been in a writing class as rigorous as this one. This

class was especially challenging because it was taken in a 6-week course which means a lot more

work in a short period of time than in a normal semester. I felt that writing held a lot of rules and

had to be a certain way so that goals were met. I think this idea of writing closed my mind off

and cut off my creativity at a certain point. Every project has given me more and more flexibility

to be creative which I am not used to. The Multigenre Campaign was one of the most difficult

assignments I have ever done in a class. I think it was so difficult because it really forced me to

use my own mind to write instead of using stiff instructions to do an assignment.

The class discussions contributed to my theory of writing. During class, Dr. Healy would

engage our mind by asking insightful questions very often. These questions made us think a lot

about writing, and our style of writing as well. There is a specific discussion I remember that
focused on the rules we thought came with writing. I left class that day realizing that writing can

truly be whatever I want it to be.

I used several aspects of my theory to help formulate my work over the course if this

semester. I didn’t have as much of rigid instruction to my work as I has in pervious classes, so I

used the ideas of the way I used to do my work and input them in how I created my work now. I

created my own outlines that would help me keep some type of organization in my work, but I

also allowed myself to venture off that if needed. The outlines I created helped me know what

information I needed to gather to be insightful and reliable in my writings.

This class has taught me many things that will be of use to me in the future. I learned

skills in researching, analyzing, and writing. These skills will help me in my future career and for

any other aspect of my life. The work in this class had challenged my creativity which will also

help me with journaling which is something I have been trying to get into. I am thankful for this

class as I know it has made me a better writer.
