Design Update

New stuffing box upgrade offers overhaul savings of typically 15%

compared to the previous design.

Retrofit kits are available for the engine
types 42-98MC/MC-C/MC-S, ME-C and
ME-B. Extensive service tests with a new-
ly developed lap-joint lamella holder have
been carried out, see picture above. The
design with the lap-joint lamella holder in
the top groove has reduced the number
of oil filter back flushing considerably. The
lap-joint holder scrapes off soot, coke, cyl-
inder lubricating oil and other combustion
particles from the piston rod. The scrape
off is led to the scavenge box drain.
The lap-joint scraper lamella holders in the
three lowermost grooves have reduced
the stuffing box drain oil volume and, si-
multaneously, increased the BN number
of drain oil.
The initiatives have been made to optimise
the performance of the stuffing box. Sys-
tem oil consumption has been reduced,
and the cleanliness of the system oil has
been improved.
