General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination
against Women (CEDAW) for legal implementation of the Declaration on the Elimination of
Discrimination against Women. Described as an international bill of rights for women, it came into
force on 3 September 1981. The UN member states that have not ratified the convention are Iran,
Palau, Somalia, Sudan, Tonga, and the United States. Niue and the Vatican City, which are non-
member states, have also not ratified it. The latest state to become a party to the convention is
South Sudan, on 30 April 2015.
The Convention defines discrimination against women in the following terms:
Any distinction, exclusion or restriction made on the basis of sex which has the effect or purpose of
impairing or nullifying the recognition, enjoyment or exercise by women, irrespective of their marital
status, on a basis of equality of men and women, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the
political, economic, social, cultural, civil or any other field.
It also establishes an agenda of action for putting an end to sex-based discrimination for which
states ratifying the Convention are required to enshrine gender equality into their domestic
legislation, repeal all discriminatory provisions in their laws, and enact new provisions to guard
against discrimination against women. They must also establish tribunals and public institutions to
guarantee women effective protection against discrimination, and take steps to eliminate all forms
of discrimination practiced against women by individuals, organizations, and enterprises
We are all entitled to human rights. These include the right to live free from violence and discrimination;
to enjoy the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health; to be educated; to own property;
to vote; and to earn an equal wage.
But across the globe many women and girls still face discrimination on the basis of sex and gender.
Gender inequality underpins many problems which disproportionately affect women and girls, such as
domestic and sexual violence, lower pay, lack of access to education, and inadequate healthcare.
These are:
1. Natural rights
2. Equal employment
3. Right to vote
4. Property rights
5. Freedom of movement
6. Informing women about their legal rights
7. Discrimination
8. Right to health
9. Right to education
10. Reproductive rights
11. Freedom from violence
12.Family law
