i.

Mill speed as a percentage of the critical speed

Critical speed = 42.3/ √D-d

=42.3/√1.6

=42.3/1.264911064

=33.44rmp

Therefore mill speed as a percentage of critical speed it becomes

Mill speed =25rmp

Critical speed=33.44rmp

(25/33.44)×100=74.76%

ii. Steel ball charge for such an empty mill in tonnes

Volume of mill =πr²h

=π(0.80)²×3.2

=6.434m³

Steel ball charge =43%

Volume of steel balls with void =43/100×6.434

=2.76662m³

Since steel voidage is 39%=39/100×2.76662

=1.0789818m³

Therefore steel ball volume =2.76662-1.0789818

=1.6876382

=1.688m³

Therefore since ball steel density is 7.8t/m³

Steel ball charge in tonnes becomes=1.688×7.8t/m³

=13.1664

=13.17tonnes

iii. Mill pulp density in terms of liquid-solid ratio

Solid exiting the mill=40tph(dry)

Pulp density=84%(solids)

Therefore

40tph :84%

X (liquid):16%

Therefore it becomes

16/84×40=7.61905t of water

Thus dilution ratio is =7.62/40

=0.1905

b.pulp density in terms of tonnes/m³

if 1tonne : 0.1905m³

then x :1m³

thus =(1/0.1905)×1

=5.24934832

=5.25t/m³

iv. Compute the mill feed water addition if mill feed contains 1.6% moisture

Pulp density=84%

Water content=16-1,6

=14.4%

Therefore

84% : 40t/hr

14.4% : x

Which is

14.4/84×40=6.857142857

=6.857m³/40t

40t/40 : 6.857/40=0.1725

1t : 0.1725

Therefore dilution ratio is 0.1725m³/t

v. Purpose of mill liners

- To protect the mil shell from wearing out caused by abrasion of the mill charge

- They make the internal working structure of a mill

- To create a grinding action

- To reduce noise when the mill is in action

- To lift charge so that comminution takes place with cataracting and to add impact and crushing
of ore

- To facilitate comminuition as the feed is dragged along the mill hence resulting in comminution
by abrasion

vi. Rate of ball addition/ball per hour if steel balls of diameter 75mm are used and consumption
rate being 1.02kg/t of ore

Given consumption rate=1.02kg/t

Solids exiting the mill=40t/hr

Ball consumption per hour =40×1.02

=40.8kg

Rate of consumption =rate of addition

Volume of one ball=⁴/₃πr³

=⁴/₃×π×((75/1000)×1/2

=0.00022m³

Mass of 1 ball=0.00022m³×7.8t/m³

=0.001716t×1000

=1.716kg

Number of balls added per hour=40.8/1.716

=23.77622378

=24balls/h
