EOR: Thermal
EOR: Thermal

• Crude oil viscosity is dependent of

temperature (and API)
• Injection of steam or hot water will
reduce viscosity, improve mobility.
• Proven for heavy-oil.
• Increased safety risk for dealing with
hot fluids.
• Energy-Intensive.
• Continuous or cyclic injection.
• Heat Management is necessary to
successfully implement thermal
EOR.
• Casing vapor collection is needed.
• May be combined with Chemicals
injection

EOR: Chemicals
EOR: Chemicals

• Injection of chemicals to improve mobility

and/or reduce IFT.
• Commercially proven, but highly depend on
the implementation strategy and
oil/chemical price
• Chemicals used can be:
– Alkaline (e.g. Na2CO3, NaOH). Generate
natural surfactant, reduce IFT.
– Surfactant (+ Co). Reduce IFT, change
wettability
– Polymer. Improve mobility
– Combination of those chemicals in slugs
EOR: Chemicals

• Chemical selection is EXTREMELY

critical, technically and economically:
• Strict qualification and QA/QC of
chemicals
• Proper chemical slug design
• Chemicals may be degraded
• Chemicals are expensive and used in
large quantities. Need local support (?)
• Example Chemical Selection criteria :
– Surfactants : Ultra low IFT (correlate to
winsor III phase behavior), stable at high
temp, low adsorption, low cost.
– Polymer: Viscosity stability at high temp and
time, filterability, low cost.
– Alkali, Co-surfactant: Compatibility, safety,
low cost
