Definition

Cause and Effect Relationship is a sentence which show that an


activity happened ( effect )as the result of another activity (cause ).
This sentences usually use some connectors, such as :

Social Function

The function of cause and effect is : giving information why something happen.

(Karena sedang hujan, ia hanya tinggal di rumah saja)
- Momo went to bed because she was sleepy.
(Momo pergi tidur karena mengantuk)
- Momo failed in her test because she didn't study.
(Momo gagal dalam ujiannya karena ia tidak
belajar)

- Because of you, I’m happy.
(Karena mu, aku bahagia)
- We were bored because of the speech.
(Kami bosan karena pidato itu)

- He was absence due to his illness.


(Ia tidak hadir karena penyakitnya)
- Due to a lot of job, my father comes home late tonight.
(Karena tugas yang menumpuk, ayahku pulang terlambat malam ini)
- The old man was lost his foot, due to car accident.
(Lelaki tua itu kehilangan kakinya, karena kecelakaan mobil)

a. I come here because I love you.
b. Many children can not go to school because they have
economic problem.
c. The concert is cancelled because it is raining hard.

. Because followed by sentence ( kalimat )

2. Because of
a. I come here because of you.
b. Many children can not go to school because of economic problem.
c. The concert is cancelled because of raining.

Because of is not followed by a sentence. It is followed by noun phrase


( economic problem ) or gerund ( raining )

a. The cancellation of the game was due to heavy rain.
b. The success on business due to his hardworking.
c. Due to her arrogance, She has a few friends.

Due to is adjectival, it follows a noun ( heavy rain ) or pronoun (


his hardworking, her arrogance )

If you are doubtful as to which of these you can use, here’s a trick:
try to substitute due to with “caused by” and see if it works.

For example :
The cancellation of the game was caused by heavy rain. ( It sounds fine ) .

3. Thanks to
a. Thanks to my fitness coach, I am now much stronger and healthier.

( This sentence indicates that the speaker’s fitness coach was responsible
for his improvement. It shows that thanks to has a sincere/positive
connotation.)

b. Thanks to my little brother, my phone is broken.

(This sentence indicates that the speaker’s little brother broke the phone and
the speaker blames him for it. It shows that “thanks to" has a negative
connotation )
