CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

I. Introduction

Absenteeism in school is the habit of staying away

from school without providing a genuine or any reason for

not attending classes. Absenteeism is a truant behavior that

negatively affects the performance among students. It could

be curbed by creating clubs to keep students busy when they

were out of class. School should endeavor to have up to date

learning facilities to make students enhance student

retention.

The study of absenteeism is very important to

the .students. The word absenteeism means the absence of a

student from class when he\she is expected to be present at

school. The attendance rate is important because students

are more likely to succeed to academics when they attend

school consistently. It’s difficult for the teacher and the

class to build their skills and progress if a large number

of students are customarily absent.

The reason why we chose this topic is because we

want to inform all students, parents and teachers why

absenteeism occurs.

The purpose why we chose this topic is because we want to

inform everyone that absenteeism have a lot of incommodity

and also we want to help to find a solution to stop

absenteeism.

II. Statement of the Problem

This study is an attempt to present or analyze the

factors resulting to absenteeism among High School student

at Sta. Rita National High School in Sta. Rita, Cabiao Nueva

Ecija, S.Y. 2018-2019.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following

problem:

1. What is the profile of the respondents with regards to:

a. Age

b. Family status

c. Gender

d. Relationship between students and teacher

2. What are the factors resulting the absenteeism among high

school students?

a. Financial problem f. school projects

b. Broken family g. having bf/gf

c. Bullying h. age gap

d. Teacher i. hang out w/friends

e. Lack of interest j. being ashamed

3. What are the possible results of absenteeism?

a. Failed or low grades

b. Lack of knowledge

c. Dropping out in school

d. Ruined future

III. Hypotheses

What are the profile of the respondents with regards:

 Most of the 14 years old are always absent.

 Most of the girls are absent.

 Most of the poor are absent.

The five factors resulting the absenteeism among students

are:

The researchers believed that the five factors

resulting absenteeism among junior high school

students are financial problem, Bullying, School

projects, Teacher and Hang-out with friends.

What are the possible results of absenteeism among

junior high school students.

We believed that the possible result of absenteeism

among Junior High School students are lack of knowledge,

failed or low grades, drop out and ruined future.

IV. Significance of the Study

 Teacher- The study about factors resulting to absenteeism

among high school students give benefits to the teachers. In

this way teachers will be apprehensive about the absences of

their students so they can make plans and solution to

derogate the absences of their students.

 Students- The benefits they can get from our research are

they can release their emotions. It can help to reduce the

problem that they encountered by motivating them to make a

move to solve that problems. In this way we can analyze

their existing knowledge to develop their skills.

 Parents- The benefits of our research for the parents, is

they will know what is the problem of their children and

from this contents they can give more support, they can

serve motivation and dedication to their children because

nowadays teenager always think that they are having lack of

attention from their parents.

 Principal- The study of the factors resulting to the

absenteeism among the students can bring benefits to the

principal because she will be aware about the reason why

absenteeism occur. In this way she can find a solution and

make a task for the teachers to reduce or avoid the

absenteeism among students.

V. DEFINITION OF TERMS

Absenteeism

-A tendency to away from work or school without good

reason.

-The practice or habit or being absent from work or

school.

Apprehensive

-Viewing the future with anxiety or alarm: feeling or

showing fear or apprehension about the future.

-Capable of understanding or quick to do so.

-Having awareness or knowledge of something.

Completion

-The act or process of completing or finishing

something.

Customarily

-By or according to custom or established practice.

-In accordance with what is customary or usual.

Derogate

-To insult (someone or something).

-To say or suggest that something is not important or

worthy of respect.

Endeavor

-To endeavor is to strive something. The endeavor

itself is the you’re striving for, the enterprise or

undertaking it’s a primarily British spelling of the

word.

Incommodity

-A source of inconvenience/disadvantage.

Truant

-To be regular absent without permission.

Utilize

-To use something for a particular purpose.

METHODOLOGY

VI. Research Design

This research entitled “The factors resulting

absenteeism among high school student” used

descriptive method under quantitative research

because it sought to describe the opinions of the

respondents on the factors resulting absenteeism

among high school students.

VII. Scope and Limitation


The respondents of the study about the factors

resulting to absenteeism are 100 Junior High School students

of Sta. Rita National High School during the S.Y. 2018-2019.

VIII. Data Gathering Tools and Methods

We gather the needed information using the descriptive

method and instruments like Questionnaires and Survey. We

identified the specific problems we wanted to describe and

we analyze the factors resulting absenteeism among junior

high school students. It was seconded by determining the

number or size of the respondents to ensure the appropriate

instrument to be utilized. Then the decision of the

instrument was done after analyzing the necessary

considerations about the study.

Based on the data that the researchers conducted and

analyzed using descriptive statistics 52% of the respondents

agreed that lack of money is the reason why they are absent

while 6% of the respondents agreed that gambling is the

reason why they are absent.

The data above shows that lack of money is the reason why

most of the students are absent.

I. Summary of Findings

This attempt sought to describe the opinions of the

respondents on the Factors resulting absenteeism among high

school students. The study included 66 girls and 34 boys

from Junior High School. A self-administered questionnaire

was used to collect data. Data was analyzed by using

descriptive statistics. The study findings provided answers

to the question related to factors resulting absenteeism

among high school student.

II. CONCLUSION

The findings of this study revealed the reasons why

absenteeism occurs, namely factors associated with lack of

money, school projects, hang out with friends, bullying,

social media and playing mobile games. Factors on which

there were differences of opinions between groups of

respondents also identified.

Based on the survey result, the profile of the

respondents with regards to family status because most of

the respondents said that lack of money is the main reason

why they are absent. The opinion of the respondents and the

content of our hypothesis state that the factor number 1, 2,

3 and 5 which is the financial problem, bullying, hang out

with friends, school projects are accepted as a factors

resulting absenteeism among high school students while the

factor number 4 which is the teacher is rejected to be one

of the factors resulting absenteeism among high school

students.

III. Recommendation

Teachers must lessen the school project especially

if the project is not necessary and they must be

understanding in the situation of their students. They

must focus on their students especially when his/her

student experiencing bullying and they must inform the

parents when their students are being absent w/o valid

reason.

Parents need to make sure if his/her children is

going to school or not. They should minimize the time of

their children using gadgets.

Principal must find a solution to prevent bullying

and he/she should make a plan and coordinate with the

teachers to present it.

Students should be more dedicated in going to school

even without money and they must put an effort into doing

it.
