Chapter I

THE PROBLEM AND A REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Presented in this chapter are the introduction, review of related literature

and studies, theoretical framework, conceptual framework, statement of the

problem, hypothesis, significance of the study, scope and delimitation and

definition of Terms.

Background of the Study

Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina has used a new learning method.

Separation of students and teachers in a teaching method. DepEd proposed

innovative learning strategies in response to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

The Executive Secretary's Office clarifies the applicability of the choice to tuition-

based schools and other non-DepEd schools. DepEd explains that private or

long as they are carefully utilizing only separation learning modalities and there

are no up close and personal classes (DepEd, 2020).

The platform for distance learning is called online learning. Online

Learning is a way to communicate through online that is delivered by using

internet it means there is no physical interaction and it is not the same with

traditional classroom. It is also refers to online learning or e-learning in other

terms. Online Learning was designed to help teachers and students to

communicate. In online learning, teachers, professors, instructors and students

should be organized for themselves not to struggle with the activities and

lectures. To make the information short, online learning means your educational

tool is based on online and by using the internet (Manoj K, 2019).

Based on Zakime (2020) due to the pandemic, online class helps students

continue to pursuit their academic without fear. The researchers want to support

schools using this research to further expand the knowledge of teachers and

students in the field of online class. Edmodo application captured the

researcher’s attention, because now a days due pandemic most of schools need

website is can be used for education networking that can provide tools for

teachers so they can communicate to the students easily and with no struggle.

Through Edmodo teacher can share any content, lessons, text and videos. This

app can be easily connected to the people that teachers want to talk to like the

students and parents.

Based on Ingres qr (2020) online Learning made to more accessible to a

larger group of people. Online Learning can help students improve academic

performance by being flexible and interactive. It can also offer students the

chance to learn new skills and to improve existing skills.

The Researchers came up with this study because on school year 2020-

2021 Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina used Edmodo as an educational

platform for online class. Due to the pandemic there is no physical interaction.

Researchers want to know the effectiveness of Edmodo to the senior high school

students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina. The Researchers also agreed

with this idea by considering that Edmodo is convenient as an online learning

platform and Edmodo does not consume much data. Teachers can easily posts

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Edmodo is a free and secured online social networking app for teachers

and students to use. According to Alqahtani, (2019) the findings of his research

show that using Edmodo leads to a statistically significant improvement in

learning skills among higher-education students. The results also illustrate that

students have positive attitudes toward the use of Edmodo in their courses.

affected our life from numerous views. E-learning or learning through the internet

take a one step further by taking advantage of the privileges proposed by the

technology; the students can also experience a learning situation in the current

Kongcham (2013) conclude to the article that the Edmodo is designed by

Jeff O’ Hara and Nick Borg in 2008 and it is a free and secure learning platform,

this website looks like Facebook and it allows teachers to create activities and

manage the account of the students, students who receives a class code can

access or join in the class.

According to Jarc (2010) students also share their activities assignments

and quizzes and they will receive their teachers feedback, Edmodo seen as

Learning Management System and teachers easily manages and set up their

online classes. Students can share their school works and the teachers will see it

and they will make a feedback and evaluate their work. Edmodo is seen as a

learning management system and it allows the teachers to easily manage and

setup their online class.

According to Cankaya et al. (2013) Edmodo is an application of education

related to the use of SNS. The fact that it is totally free of charge it is one of the

reasons why Edmodo has become so widely spread. In addition to its

In the educational environment, Edmodo enables the effect of social

media to be used. It provides a healthy space for teachers and learners in many

ways, such as teamwork, feedback, personalized learning, and so on. It offers

time, place and independence for learners and also helps to control learners and,

thanks to its elated features, enables them to share their information and ideas

according to Edmodo (2015). Edmodo allows the educational experience

available at any time to both teachers and students, and also to parents from any

location. Learners can perform the tasks they have been assigned and also use

the basic features of the program to communicate with their instructor in several

ways.

According to Ekici (2017) that this study was to create an online

community of practice by building a virtual classroom in the Edmodo application

and to evaluate the views of pre-service primary teachers on Edmodo effect on

their learning to teach science and Edmodo availability. The teachers used

education open up more possibilities because of accessibility.

Garuda Maintenance Facility class in Electronic Engineering study program of

State Polytechnic of Malang is that some students gain their understanding in

Edmodo and also them exploring it. They find out the advantages and

disadvantages about implementation of Edmodo. The study stated that teachers

have done activities via Edmodo. Also it helps teachers to present their lesson

via Edmodo.

BaseD on Hakim, Kodriyah & Inggris (2015) Edmodo is a online platform

that can connect people into another. Edmodo can assess homework, grades

and all educational purposes. With the help of Edmodo teachers can costumize

their own classroom for each student. Also this literature stated that could be the

effective solution to implement the classroom in blended learning way.

It is fair to say that education researchers and scientists agree on the

need to use technology in education to achieve permanent and successful

learning in individuals while improving educational quality according to (Komis,

Ergazakia, Zogzaa 2017).

a result, they decided to incorporate new learning modalities as a replacement

for the prior one. It evolved from traditional face-to-face classes to more flexible

online classes. Students have to adapt to a new learning environment as a result

Theoretical Framework of the Study

Research uses an approach that made the students, not only they have to

learn, but also they have to interact to the application. (Smulders, 2002). The

figure is the framework illustration for E-Learning usability of Zaharias and

Poylymenakou theory of e-learning usability employing motivation to learn. Which

employs (a) a combination of Web design and instructional design parameters

and (b) intrinsic motivation to learn (Keller, 1983). This research focuses on

usability evaluation of asynchronous e-learning applications where the difference

user and learner the user interface and the learning material. Rather, this

distinction is meant to emphasize the importance of content in e-learning

This research relies mainly on a theoretical framework (Zaharias, 2004,

2005, 2008), which employs (a) a combination of Web design and instructional

design parameters and (b) intrinsic motivation to learn (Keller, 1983), see Figure

1. Intrinsic motivation can be characterized within the self to carry out an activity

whose reward is derived from the enjoyment of the activity itself

(Csikszentmihalyi, 1975). The theoretical framework presupposes that all

The user of an e-learning application is both a user who requires to interact with

an interactive system as well as a learner who needs to learn. This distinction

aims at highlighting the special value that content brings to e-learning

applications. This framework incorporates Web usability parameters that satisfy

the user part of the double persona and instructional design parameters that

satisfy the learner part of the double persona and integrates them with intrinsic

motivation to learn. According to the theoretical framework, the usability

parameters were chosen from an array of studies for inclusion into the

questionnaire such as: Navigation, Learnability, Accessibility, Consistency, Visual

Design, Interactivity, Content & Resources, Media Use, Learning Strategies

Design, Instructional Feedback, Instructional Assessment, and Learner Guidance

& Support. All these parameters were carefully selected to associate them with

learners’ motivation to learn. Keller’s (1983) theory and related model, which is

perhaps the most influential model of motivation, was adopted in order to further

analyze and interpret the motivation to learn construct. According to Keller

(1983), the motivation to learn construct is composed of four subconstructs:

attention, relevance, confidence and satisfaction.
