Accomplishment Report in the Reading Action Plan 2021-2022

“To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.” (- Victor Hugo)
The person who deserves most pity is a lonesome one on a rainy day who doesn’t know how to
read.” - Benjamin Franklin
From this quotation, we teachers of San Teodoro Central School were inspired to make steps to
help our pupils from the primary to Intermediate level improve their reading skills .From the
reading action plan , the activities stated there were followed religiously so that our efforts in
levelling up the reading skills of Central pupils be successful and in return help boost their self
confidence that if others can read ,they can do it also without fear.
Profiling of readers help a lot to determine those pupils who needed the most help, the
struggling readers ,the best readers too and those with and without comprehension. The use of
Philiri Group Screening test help a lot in this matter.
We also seek the help of the parents and local barangay officials, by giving them orientation
first on how they can extend their help for the benefit of their children. In fact a mini library in
the barangay was proposed so that children have their place to read during weekends or when
they are free.
Some books from the library were donated and others came from stakeholders. The Education
Coordinator who was an elected barangay councilor take charge of the mini library. Children
can read books in the library and can borrow also but with the assurance that they will return
for others’ use.
Parents at home since its modular learning, were given task also to follow up the reading
capacity of their children. Through the reading kits distributed to all pupils in every grade level,
with different reading materials, they were asked to guide their children in reading., At first ,
they listened to a recorded voice of their teacher to serve as model on how to read the short
story or poem ,then they will imitate the way how it was read. Through messenger, parents
sent the videos of their children reading on their own. They were also told to asked questions
on what was read to determine their comprehension skills.
To be sure that pupils really can read as seen from the videos sent ,we teachers conducted
home visitations and have a one on one face to face with the pupil following the minimum
health protocols such as wearing facemask and with a small alcohol bottle. Base from this, we
were able to identify slow and fast readers. From this another strategy were applied to help
them cope with their problem and to encourage them more to read.
During Modular distribution, a reading material was also given for the pupils to read and
parents were advised to watch how their children read and if there were changes on their
reading speed.
Constant text/call from messenger of the teacher to the parents help a lot and the pupils were
the ones who benefited the most.
The result of the PHILIRI Post test revealed there was a big change in the reading capabilities
of the pupils in terms of comprehension .
During the Limited face to face classes on the last quarter, pupils reading skills were also
monitored through individual oral reading and comprehension checkup. The English
Coordinator together with the principal take time to visit rooms for constant follow up.
Teachers prepared stories for them to read with 5 questions to answer to test their
comprehension skills. The harmonious relationship between the parents and teachers was
considered as one of the great factors for the success of this endeavor.
