Topic: Paragraphs
MELC: Compose effective paragraphs

Key Concepts

• A paragraph is a group of sentences that develops one topic or idea.

It has three main parts.

• The first part is the topic sentence. It is called the topic sentence because it
states the topic or the subject of the paragraph.
• The second part is the supporting sentences. The supporting sentences
develop the topic. This means that they explain the topic sentence in detail.
• The last part is the concluding sentence. The concluding sentence
summarizes the paragraph and/or adds a final comment.

Locating the topic sentence

• The sentence which may be stated or implied and which contains the
purpose of the paragraph is commonly called the topic sentence. It may be
found at the beginning, middle and at the end of the paragraph.

Topic Sentence at the beginning of the paragraph

Example:

The environment in which an organism lives is known as

habitat. Earthworms live in the soil; a field mouse lives in a rice field; a lizard
lives in a house; the fish lives in water; a flea lives on the skin of a dog or cat;
frogs live in ponds and the squids live in the sea.
Topic Sentence at the middle of the paragraph
Example:
She hates to spend even for food. When a needy relative comes to
ask for financial help, she locks her door, closes her windows, and pretends that
nobody’s home. What a stingy person Aunt Asiang is. She wears worn-out
slippers and faded dusters. She never gives away old clothes and other old
articles.
Topic Sentence at the end of the paragraph
Example:
Eat a balanced diet. Exercise regularly. Set aside a period of rest
each working day. Avoid smoking and drinking liquor. These are some of the
ways to stay healthy.

Important elements of Paragraph Writing

• Unity- means that a paragraph should deal with one central theme,
one central thought. Every paragraph has one single, controlling idea
that is expressed in its topic sentence, which is typically the first
sentence of the paragraph. A paragraph is unified around this main
idea, with the supporting sentences providing detail and discussion.

• Order-refers to the way you organize your supporting sentences.

Whether you choose chronological order, order of importance, or another
logical way of presentation of detail, a solid paragraph always has a
definite organization. In a well-ordered paragraph, the reader follows
along easily, aided by the pattern you’ve established. Order helps the
reader grasp your meaning and avoid confusion.

• Coherence- it is the quality that makes your writing understandable.

Sentences within a paragraph need to connect to each other and work
together as a whole. One of the best ways to achieve coherence is to
use transition words. These words create bridges from one sentence to
the next. You can use transition words that show order (first, second,
third); spatial relationships (above, below) or logic (furthermore, in
addition, in fact). Also, in writing a paragraph, using a consistent verb
tense and point of view are important ingredients for coherency.

• Completeness- means a paragraph is well-developed. If all sentences

clearly and sufficiently support the main idea, then your paragraph is
complete. If there are not enough sentences or enough information to
support your idea, then the paragraph is incomplete. Usually three
supporting sentences, in addition to a topic sentence and concluding
sentence, are needed for a paragraph to be complete. The concluding
sentence or last sentence of the paragraph should summarize your
main idea by reinforcing your topic sentence.

Activity 2
Directions: Read and analyze the following paragraphs below. Identify the topic
sentence and its position. Write your answers on the spaces provided.

1. The sun must have a supply of energy I it is to exist. The Milky Way
must have a supply of energy if it and each of its parts is to keep working. The
universe must have a supply of energy or it would cease to exist as it is today.
Energy is necessary in the universe, and this is why the universe is called as
an energy system.

2. Volcanoes have destroyed villages and even whole cities. They have
killed and injured many people and driven others from their homes. Indeed,
volcanoes can cause damage and suffering.

Position: _________________________________________________________________________

3. When a camera flash is used in a low-light environment, the subject's

eyes may appear red in the finished photograph. What is known as "red-eye"
is the result of light from the flash reflecting off the pupils of the eyes. The
phenomenon of red-eye can be lessened by using the red-eye reduction feature
found on many SLR cameras. This feature activates a lamp which shines a
small light directly into the subject's eyes. When this happens, the diameter of
the pupil is reduced, thus tightening the opening in the iris. Since a smaller
pupil means a smaller host for the reflection, the chances of red-eye occurring
are greatly reduced.

4. People do it every day. They log on to their favorite website and browse
for hours, checking out bargains. They dump every possible wish into their
shopping carts, knowing they can cast each one aside before they finalize
their purchases. On the way, they may enter a sweepstakes in the hopes of
winning a trip to Japan, or maybe even a new SUV. And then, when they have
decided on their purchases, they enter private information without giving it a
thought. With a keystroke, they release their personal data into what may or
may not be a secure zone. Despite what much of the public believes, internet
shopping is not safe.

Position: ________________________________________________________________________

5. Constructing a wedding cake is a complicated process. Before any

baking takes place, the size of the cake and the decorative design to be used
must be determined. Then the layers are baked. On a large cake the bottom
layers may be as much as sixteen inches in diameter. Because of their size,
these layers must be baked one at a time, a process which may actually take
an entire day. Once the layers are cooled, same-size pairs are matched and
frosted. Since large wedding cakes are surprisingly heavy, half-inch dowel
rods must be measured, cut, and carefully driven into the bottom layers. These
wooden posts provide hidden support for the weighty upper layers. When all
the layers are set in place, flowers, garlands and leaves of frosting are added.
These delicate touches individualize the wedding cake and transform it from
merely a cake into a culinary work of art.
