Topic: Problem - Solution Grammatical Signals

MELC: Use appropriate grammatical signals suited to each pattern of idea
development.

Key Concept

PROBLEM AND SOLUTION

WHAT IS IT?
It provides information about a problem and suggests alternatives for a
solution.
solution

problem solution

solution

Below are some of the problem-solution grammatical signals that you

can use:

• The problem is if…then

• The question is in order to
• The dilemma is to solve this
• The difficulty is so that
• Solution one answer is
• Because steps involve
• Recommendations prevented
• as a result so that
• in order to
Activity 1
Directions: Read the following sentences. Identify the problem solution
grammatical signals used. Write the answer on the space provided before
each number

__________1. The local government delivers water to different barangays every

Saturday in order to solve the water shortage.

__________2. A meeting was held to solve the conflict among others.

__________3. The charity is not getting enough donations to support the Covid-19
patients and affected families. As a solution, the organizers doubled their effort to
encourage more donors and sponsors.
__________4. Emily knew she had to get to school on time, but her mother said she
couldn’t drive her. So, Emily decided to leave early and walk to school.

__________5. Shahnaz wanted a fresh banana for her cake. The store near her did
not have any fresh ones, therefore she went to another store and bought it there.

Activity 2
Directions: Below are paragraphs about problems and their possible
solutions. Encircle all the problem-solution grammatical signals that are
used in each of the paragraph.

Paragraph 1

It seems like there has been a surge in Covid – 19 these days. The
difficulty is, it is very hard for every Filipino to stop the spread of the
virus. The government ordered the IATF to formulate rules to stop the
spread of the virus. As a solution, senior citizens and ages 15 years
and below are advised to stay at home. Recommendations also include
that everyone should wear face mask and shield to protect
himself/herself from the virus.

Paragraph 2

Drug abuse causes multiple problems for countries and communities.

The medical and psychological effects are very obvious. Addicts cannot
function as normal members of society. However, the menace of drugs
can be solved. Education is the first solution. People need to be aware
of the effects so that they can avoid this problem. A second solution is
to increase police manpower and create effective laws to stop dealers.
In conclusion, there are concrete steps that can be taken to weaken
the hold of drugs in the society. The danger of drugs is too great to
ignore for us and our children.
Paragraph 3

Humans have always had an impact on their surroundings. Garbage is

one of our biggest effects on nature. Unlike other animals, humans
create too much waste for nature to keep up. With garbage comes
pollution. When you burn garbage it gives extremely poisonous gases
into the atmosphere. Even if we bury our garbage it will not go away. By
polluting the ground, it can seep into our farming soil and even into our
ground water. The biggest solution to our garbage problem is the fabled
R.R.R. (reduce, reuse, recycle). Imagine if everyone recycled their paper
instead of throwing it out and if every nation followed the same
ambition to reduce our garbage pollution, then our future will be much
brighter for our children.

Activity 3
Directions: Read each paragraph. A graphic organizer is used to show the
structure of the text. Fill in the missing boxes with the appropriate
information.

1. Having a cold is no fun. Coughing makes it hard to fall asleep. A sore

throat is painful. Try some tea with honey in it. The honey will soothe
your throat. There may be no cure for the common cold. You can treat
the symptoms though.

Problem Solution

Sore throats can be

2. A sprain is a tear in the muscle. Sprains happen when a muscle is
twisted or overstretched. They can be painful. If you sprain a muscle,
you should ice it immediately. Putting ice on a sprain will reduce
swelling and pain. It may help stop internal bleeding too.

Put ice on the

sprained muscle

3. Nobody wants to be stung by a bee. Bee stings are itchy and painful.
But what if the bee stings you anyway? One thing that you can do is
to put vinegar on it. The acid in the vinegar may reduce the pain and
swelling from the sting.

Activity 4
Directions: Identify the problems in your community and list down all the
solutions that you think will help solve the problem you have identified.
Use a graphic organizer below.
