SEQUENCES AND SERIES
5.1 Arithmetic Sequences (Page 81)
• In an arithmetic sequence, the difference between consecutive terms
is constant.
• If 𝑢𝑛 is the nth term, then
𝑢𝑛+1 − 𝑢𝑛 = 𝑑 = common difference, for 𝑛 = 1,2,3, …
• If a is the first term, the arithmetic sequence is of the form:
𝑎, 𝑎 + 𝑑, 𝑎 + 2𝑑, …
• The formula for the nth term of an arithmetic sequence is
𝑢𝑛 = 𝑎 + (𝑛 − 1)𝑑
⸫ 𝑛 = 28
𝑢28 = 55 − 2 × 28 = −1
𝑎 − 7 = 30
⸫ 𝑎 = 37
Let 𝑢𝑛 < 0.
𝑎 + (𝑛 − 1)𝑑 < 0

37 + (𝑛 − 1)(− ) < 0
