SCIENCE INVESTIGATORY PROJECT

Garlic and Cacao leaves as Natural Insect Repellent

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the pesticidal effect of Cacao leaves
and garlic extracts on mosquito and other insects. Insect repellent are important
tools in eradicating or preventing insects bites as well as insects that carries insect-
borne diseases. Moreover , one of the effective natural insect repellent is cacao
(Theobroma Cacao leaves and Garlic (Allium Sativum). This experimental
research was conducted to determine the effectiveness of Cacao ( Theobroma
Cacao leaves extract as natural insect repellent. It further looked into whether there
is a significant difference in the level of effectiveness between an all-natural insect
repellent and commercial as well as how long would the insect repellent take
effect.

Back ground of the study:

Cacao tree and the cocoa tree is a small evergreen tree it’s seeds, cocoa beans are
used to make chocolates liquor, cocoa solids, and chocolates.
Scientific Name: Theobroma Cacao
Family: Malvaceae
Kingdom: Plantae
We all know the insecticides is widely used before and all this years to
different kinds of insects, but some of those insect repellent sold in the market are
quiet expensive and has strong chemical ingredients which is dangerous to our
environment as well as to us.
I will introduce to you the Cacao leaves and Garlic as insect repellent as a
substitute to those chemically insect repellent in the market. How does it work? As
we all know Cacao leaves contains a toxic chemical called Tannin and it’s very
poisonous to insects, it can kill them.
What is Tannin? Tannin is a yellowish or brownish bitter tasting organic
substance present in some barks and other plant tissue.
Garlic or allium sativum, garlic products designed for used in food industry.
However garlic makes powerful natural insect repellent because it contain an
amino acid that converts to a substance called allicin where compound produced
when garlic is crashed or chopped. Garlic also is considered as antibacterial.
Insecticides or ovicides are widely used before and after these years to kill or
destroy different insect however, some of these ovicides /insecticides being sold in
the market have very strong ingredients that chose danger to our environment as
well to us.

Objectives:
1. To develop an effective insect repellent made of common house hold plants (Cacao
Leaves and Garlic).
2. To find a method that will effectively combine the plant mixtures without
producing unpleasant odor.
3. To concoct a product that won’t produce allergens.

Methodology:

Materials/ equipment needed:

Garlic Sprayer Strainer

Water Knife
Cacao Leaves Stock pot
Stove Chopping board

Procedure

1) Prepare the cacao leaves for boiling.

2) Heat the water then put the cacao leaves.

3) Wait until 5 minutes to boil.

4) Take out the cacao leaves from the boiling water and throw it away.

5) Crush the garlic.

6) Put the Distilled garlic into the boiling water. Wait until 2 minutes.

7) Get the strainer to separate the garlic from the water. Wait for the hot solution to
cool off then place it in the sprayer and now you’re ready to kill insects.

Significance of the Study

It is known that ” prevention is better than cure”. With the growing number of
mosquito-inflicted diseases today, the necessity of looking for insecticides that are
definitely effective in killing mosquitoes rises, Cacao leaves, being a locally
available product can be used as a raw material to be utilized in making concoction
that prevents the growth of mosquito population. Moreover, this Cacao leaves and
Garlic
insecticides is specifically effective in eradicating mosquitoes plus it is unharmful
to our environment and to ourselves.
Result and Discussion
The proportion of Cacao leaves and Garlic has a significant difference in the
repellent activity. I found out that the different proportions of Cacao leaves and
Garlic affect the number of mosquiteos being reppeled. In doing the expirement
using the small cage and spray the Cacao and garlic insecticides to the mosquitoes,
after few minutes the mosquitoes died

Conclusion:
Based on the results, I concluded that Theobroma Cacao leaves and Allium
Sativum Garlic bulb decoction is effective in repelling in terms of number of
mosquitoes and I conclude that this product can kill deferent kind of insect and it
can also help to prevent dengue.
