THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CACAO LEAVES (Theobroma cacao) AND GARLIC

EXTRACT (Allium sativum) AS AN ALTERNATIVE INSECT REPELLANT

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of cacao leaves (Theobroma cacao) and garlic
extract (Allium sativum) as an alternative insect repellant as extermination time analysis from the
selected insects, in which will be compared and contrasted from the commercial insect repellant.
The bases of the recommendation will be the result of the study.
Specifically, this study aims to answer this following questions:

1. Which among the set-ups has the least effectiveness in eliminating the insects?
2. Which among the set-ups is very effective in eliminating the insects?

Null Hypothesis

H01: There is no significant difference on the proposed alternative insect repellant on the
extermination of mosquitoes () in terms of its time duration using the following alternatives:
a. Cacao leaves (Theobroma cacao)
b. Garlic Extract (Allium sativum)

H02: There is no significant difference on the proposed alternative insect repellant on the
extermination of houseflies (Musca domestica) in terms of its time duration using the following
alternatives:
a. Cacao leaves (Theobroma cacao)
b. Garlic extract (Allium sativum)

H03: There is no significant difference on the proposed alternative insect repellant on the
extermination of fleas () in terms of its time duration using the following alternatives
a. Cacao leaves (Theobroma cacao)
b. Garlic extract (Allium sativum)
H04: There is no significant difference on the proposed alternative insect repellant and the
commercial insect repellant in terms of quick extermination of:
4.1 mosquitoes
4.2 houseflies (Musca domestica)
4.3 fleas

H04: There is no significant difference between the two products in terms of its effectiveness.

Summary of Introduction
Cacao tree is a tree having a yellowish followers followed by the fleshy pods from which cacao
is obtained. The dried partly fermented fatty seeds of South America never green tree that are
used in making cacao bean and cocoa bean.
Garlic is an herb that is grown around the world. It is related to onion, leeks, and chives. It is
thought that the garlic is native is Siberia, but spread to other parts of the world. Garlic is used
for many conditions related to the heart and blood system.
Insect repellant or also known as bug spray is a substance that is applied to the skin, clothing or
other surface to avoid insects to land or climb on that applied surface. And insects can be found
everywhere we go and one of the easiest way to avoid them to bite or come near to the people is
to use insect repellants. However, most commercial insect repellant that is on the market or
stores is expensive and also contains harmful chemicals which may cause harmful effects once
touch or apply to the skin of a person. Our group planned to develop an alternative liquid insect
repellant that that uses organic ingredients, human friendly, eco-friendly, and much cheaper and
safer.
