Additional Port Information
• Inbound vessel must give way to outbound vessel per good seamanship. Manoeuvre per COLREGS.
• Do not approach beyond Pilot Station. You do NOT have to blindly follow port / pilot instructions.
• Master and Bridge Team are always in charge of maneovering, even with Pilot onboard.
• Discuss Harbour Manoeuvering Plan with Pilot as soon as he boards and ensure agreement before proceeding.
• If UKC is less than twice the draft, beware of shallow water effects such as increased stopping distance or increased turning circle.
• Remember to proceed slowly and as per plan. In case of slightest doubt of safety of manoeuvre, do not hesitate to go full astern and drop both
• Duty officer is expected to be a ‘co-pilot’ and assist Master in monitoring of the manoeuvre. He must announce loudly the next change of
course or speed 1 cable before such change. He must also announce loudly any deviation from Harbour Manoeuvering Plan and alert Master &
Pilot.
• Duty Officer must monitor progress of vessel by parallel-indexing and be aware of position by using radar distances.
• Do not hesitate to cancel or abort manoeuvre when conditions are unfavourable. Such conditions may be: Zero visibility, wind speed > 25 kts,
Tug require for safe manoeuvering not available, gantries are not clear (at bow or stern ).
• Always berth in a parallel manner. Bring ship parallel to berth when one breadth off, stop thrusters/tugs when half breadth off.
