ACTIVITY
RATIONALE In support of Gender and Development program, Burauen
Comprehensive National High School conducted School-
Based Seminar Training Workshop on: a. Gender and
Development Sensitivity Awareness; b. Comprehensive
Sexuality Education (CSE) for all teachers of Burauen
Comprehensive National High School. The first speaker of
the aforementioned seminar was Mrs. Cheryl Lyn Cagara
Abordo, she was tasked to share inputs on “Gender and
Development Sensitivity Awareness”. The topic
“Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE)” was discussed
by the GAD teacher-advocates of Burauen Comprehensive
National High School.

As a teacher it is important to be gender sensitive


especially that we are encountering a lot of students and
co-workers in our day-to-day workplace. This seminar will
really help teachers to be gender sensitive and be able to

share this knowledge to the students as will.
The main goal of the said training was to inform the
teachers about gender related issues and concerns of men
OBJECTIVES and women in society, particularly in school. To promote
gender sensitivity in the classroom and workplace. To have
gender equality.
Prior to this event, our Secondary School Principal IV, Mrs.
Eleanor E. Cagara, on one of the faculty meeting at the BCNHS-
Social Hall informed all teachers to attend to a training about
Gender Sensitivity to help and support the Gender and
Development Program in our school. A master of this topic
was invited to facilitate and discuss on the topics related to
gender sensitivity in the presence of Mrs. Cheryl Lyn
Cagara Abordo, RSW, MPA, MA.

The training started with a welcome address given of our


Assistant School Principal II, Mr. Jeffry C. Advincula. This

was followed by the statement of the purpose delivered by
our Secondary School Principal IV, Mrs. Eleanor E. Cagara.
After that, a levelling of expectation in a form of activity
done by grade level was conducted and was facilitated by
Mr. Elmer Alcober. This activity is where teachers are able
to give their expectations on the training. Before the
Training proper proceeds, an introduction of the speaker
was conducted by Mrs. Liza R. Malate to properly introduce
the resource speaker of the day.

participants will go to www.menti.com and provide words
that comes up when “Gender Sensitivity” is heard. Words
like, equality, LGBTQ+, controversial and a lot more was
get through that activity. This helps the speaker know how
do the participants understand Gender Sensitivity.

The discussion focused on the Legal Mandates and Basis of


GAD. Various examples were given to illustrate gender
differences, inequality, equality, biases, and prejudices; be
it in school or real-life settings. Another topic during the
discussion was gender awareness and sensitivity. The
teachers were also accustomed to know how to
acknowledge gender differences and promote gender
sensitivity in a school setting. Each discussion was
accompanied by corresponding activities to assess the
learning and to enable the teachers to see situations that
are experienced that are related to issues and concerns of
Gender Development.

On the second day of training, Mrs. Liza R. Malate


discussed about the “Entry Points of Comprehensive
Sexuality Education (CSE) and Learning Materials in the K-
12 Curriculum/MELCS”. She gives insights and ways on
how Gender and Equality can be integrated on some of the
subjects on the JHS and SHS. It was also given emphasis
on informing students about the correct terminologies to be
used to educate the learners properly and to prevent future
miscommunication. The next topic that was discussed by

Mr. Marlon Gayanes was again under the topic of
Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE), “Learning Now,
Learning New, Learning Next”. This topic was focused on
knowing the different diseases caused by unsafe sexual
activity like STIs/STDs, HIV and AIDS. The discussion was
also focused on identifying different examples and
symptoms of these diseases, the reasons why young people
are at risk of having these kinds of diseases and also on
how it can be prevented. It was also highlighted the
importance of fighting these disease as one community,
and enlighten the participants to be more aware and open-
minded on this kind of issues. The last discussion for the
second day of the training workshop was about knowing
once Gender Identity that was discussed by Mr. Jordan
Refuerzo.

On the last day of the training workshop, the first speaker


to share insights on Laws against women and child and
also about gender-based violence was Mrs. Thelma
Reataza. This is where teachers are able to know and
understand these laws that will empower each one of us to
stand up for our rights. The next discussion was about
Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) Lesson exemplar
delivered by mrs. Shiela Mangallon, wherein she discussed
and showed examples of lesson exemplar made in
connection to Gender and Development. After all the topics
discussed, Mr. Elmer Alcober help the trainees on how to
create an action plan based on gender and development

issues faced by the teachers in their respective classrooms.

The morning sessions and afternoon sessions on the 3-day


training workshop were adjourned at 12: 00 noon and 5:
00 P. M. respectively. The participants left the venue filled
with knowledge about gender and development and
equipped with skills in the practical application of gender-
related concerns and issues in school and real-life settings.
The only problem that was encountered during the training
was the unstable internet connection since there are

activities where internet connection is necessary but the
ENCOUNTERED
speaker and participants was able to handle the problem
and look for alternatives to overcome the problem.
There are a lot of knowledge and lessons learned during
this training. Through this training we are able to
determine the true essence of gender sensitivity and how
important it is to have awareness on these particular
issues that is highly talked about these days. This is also
important to us teacher to know all about gender
sensitivity for us to pass on the knowledge to out learners
LESSON LEARNED
and to be able to be sensitive on their sentiments especially
that we are handling adolescents where gender role is still
developing. We are also able to relate this topic in our
workplace and also in our day-to-day living. We are
thankful for the knowledge shared to us by our resource
speaker, it will truly a big help for the development of a
gender sensitive school.
