Writing Genre: A Poem

A. What is a poem?
A poem is a collection of spoken or written words that expresses ideas or emotions in
a powerfully vivid and imaginative style.

B. How to write a poem?

Rhyming words are words that have the same ending sound (from the last vowel
sound through the end of the word).
It's important to listen to the sound of the words and not just look at the spelling; there
are many words that have a similar spelling but do not have the same sound. For
example, "do" and "go" look like they should rhyme, but they don't. The same goes for "lost"
and "post."
It goes the other way as well. There are words that do not look like rhyming words
because of different spellings, but they do rhyme. Some examples include:
"blue" and "through"
"true" and "you"
"said" and "red"

Reading aloud helps you hear the rhyming words.

Writing Strategy: 5 senses poem

Taste, touch, sight, smell, and hearing.
Your five senses help you take in information from the world around you. These senses
are also a powerful tool to use when you're writing.
In Nature’s Way, the author uses the 5 senses to describe nature to the readers. Using the
5 senses in writing creates a clearer picture and makes the readers feel a part of the setting.

Breathe the scent of nice fresh air

Feel the breeze within your hair

Smell the flowers with your nose

Hear the buzzing of the bees

Watch a gentle cold stream flow
