1 FFS Training Preparation

Recurrent Training on the Full Flight Simulator
Prepared with theoretical recurrent training elements and having experience in the cockpit as already type-
rated pilots, the trainees are able to safely operate the A320 from the very beginning of the recurrent
practical training.
The correct scanning and SOP-application are core elements during the recurrent practical training, as it is
during standard revenue operation. A good mixture of manual flying and automated flying will be provided
during the training missions to ensure safe handling in all flight phases within the aeroplane’s routine flight
envelope.
Proper crew coordination and efficient CRM behaviour are essential throughout the recurrent training phase.
Single CRM elements and associated behavioural markers will be highlighted by the instructor during each
lesson’s briefing and debriefing.
Lufthansa Flight Training uses Full Flight Simulators which are certified to JAR-STD-level D.

3-Year Cycle for Afriqiyah Airways

Every six months one STD recurrent training mission and one STD recurrent training mission is scheduled.
Consequently a total of 12 missions will be flown by every cockpit crew member within three years.

In line with EU OPS 1.965 this aeroplane STD training programme for Afriqiyah Airways is established such
that all major failures of aeroplane systems and associated procedures will have been covered in the
preceding 3-Year period.

Additionally this aeroplane STD training programme for Afriqiyah Airways is established such that all required
recurrent training and checking elements for low visibility operations as prescribed in EU OPS 1.965 (b) are
fulfilled.

If a pilot has to remain qualified to operate in either pilot seat, the training and checking program as
prescribed in EU OPS 1.968 has to be performed additionally. The lesson plans in this document do not
cater for the regulations of EU OPS 1.968. If required, an additional 30 minutes training and checking time
has to be considered during every OPC mission.

The specific topic allocation for Afriqiyah Airways is based on the AIRBUS FCTP Issue 10, SEP 2012.

This document covers in detail the missions

The Importance of CRM

LAT ensures the integration of CRM elements into all the phases of the recurrent training - by all the
ATO
personnel conducting recurrent training. ATO
LAT ensures that all personnel conducting recurrent training are
suitably qualified to integrate elements of CRM into this training.
One specific CRM sub-element is especially allocated to every recurrent training & checking mission. Thus
LAT ensures that all elements and all sub-elements are highlighted during the 3-Year cycle.
The TRT FPT lessons are used to become familiar with the aircraft systems, to train the correct instrument
scanning, to fully understand the efficient crew teamwork as pilot flying (PF) and as pilot monitoring (PM)
according to standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Documentation provided by LAT

ATO
Proper preparation by the trainees is required prior each practical training session.
For each single mission LAT
ATO provides lesson plans. This documentation gives important information and
training details which must be known before start of the next session:

Documentation provided by Operator

No practical training shall start without having studied the below mentioned documentation which will provide
students with all required system and procedure knowledge for the specific session topics.

FCOM
The Flight Crew Operating Manual
The Airbus Flight Crew Operating Manual (FCOM) is the support documentation for flight crews. It provides
them with the necessary information about the operational, technical, procedural, and performance
characteristics of the A320, to ensure safe and efficient operations of the aircraft during normal and
abnormal/emergency situations, that may occur on ground, or in flight.
The FCOM is intended to be used:
• Directly as flight crew operating manual or to provide operators with a basis for their development of a
customized airline operations manual, in accordance with applicable requirements
• As a comprehensive reference guide during initial and refresher flight crew training.

FCTM
The Flight Crew Training Manual
The FCTM is published as a supplement to the Flight Crew Operating Manual (FCOM) and is designed to
provide pilots with practical information on how to operate the Airbus aircraft. It should be read in conjunction
with the FCOM. In the case of any conflict, the FCOM is the over-riding authority.
Airline training policy may differ in certain areas. Should this be the case, the airline training policy is the
over-riding authority.

QRH
The Quick Reference Handbook is available to the trainees throughout the whole course as hardcopy
document.
The QRH provides information concerning
• Normal Procedures
• Abnormal and Emergency Procedures
• In Flight Perfomance
• Operational Data
• OEB’s (Operations Engineering Bulletins)

Example Briefings
The conduction of the procedures and theoretical knowledge will be discussed in a one hour briefing before
every single simulator mission. This will make sure the lesson’s objectives which are planned to be achieved.
Also after every mission there will be a detailed briefing in which feedback about the quality of the trained
exercises, gained proficiency, and trainee’s team ability is given.

Perfomance Data
A take-off data performance calculation has been prepared for each session (see “Environmental and
Aeroplane Set-Up”). The Instructor may change the performance data if so required.
The landing distance performance is intentionally not calculated for every lesson. However, there will be an
extended explanation of the standard procedure made by Airbus Industry for landing distance calculation
and VAPP determination with and without failures.

Use of Autoflight System (AP, FD, A/THR)

Although the use of flight directors, autopilots and autothrust is recommended, parts of the sessions will be
flown without these systems to get a precise feeling of the aeroplanes behaviour and to be able to take over
manually in all worst cases. The Instructor will advise the use of flight directors, autopilot and autothrust.

How the Instructor will give Feedback

Every Trainee could face some unwanted deficiencies throughout the course, which is normal. Since there
are only four hours of FFS-time available, this should only be discussed briefly to be able to continue the
mission.
The Instructor’s observations (positive and negative) have to be discussed sensitively and in detail during the
debriefing. A written feedback will be recorded in the Trainee’s training documents to enable him/her or
future instructors to review strengths, weaknesses and items which need improvement.

Reporting & Monitoring

After each Lesson is completed:
• The instructor will note deficiencies (if any) in the Traning Record. This shall inform the next instructor to
repeat the mentioned insufficient item.
• Trainer and trainee must sign last page of every lesson.
Major training deficiencies have to be reported by the instructor to LAT Head of Training or A320 Chief
Instructor without delay via telephone and e-mail.

Grading
Grading is optional and has to be agreed to by the customer before the start of training. If no other scale is
agreed on between the customer and LAT, the following table applies:

Grading Meaning
BS Performance, knowledge, abilities or skills are very poor and are definitely below
Below Standard the required standard for the stage of the course.
MS Performance, knowledge, abilities or skills are barely sufficient, just up to the
Marginal Standard required safety standard without any margin left. Errors and weak points are
discovered, which – if they accumulate – would lead to serious problems.
S Performance, knowledge, abilities and skills fulfil the required standard and
Standard correspond to the stage of training. Errors and weak points – if any – are minor
and isolated only.
HS Performance, knowledge, abilities and skills are very good. System understanding
High Standard is excellent and handling skills are not only safe, but elegant.

Navigation Data / Aerodrome Documentation

Customers can use their own route documents. If required, LAT can provide Jeppesen- or Lido-Charts.
FMS route will be installed during pre-flight phase of every FFS session. However, the instructor may give a
different but more convenient departure route and en-route clearance for subsequent exercises during the
lesson.

2.3 Recurrent Training Lesson OPC (LPC)

This document contains all relevant information required by the Examiner and the Applicant for the
Proficiency Check.
The mission is in any case an Operator’s Proficiency Check (OPC). Depending on the Pilot’s validity date of
his A320 rating, it also can serve as License Proficiency Check (LPC).
The Proficiency Check concludes the recurrent training for this period. Pilots shall demonstrate knowledge of
flight procedures, safe aircraft handling and efficient and correct handling of malfunctions according to
checklists. As the A320 is a MPA-aircraft, CRM constitutes an integrated part of Pilots’ knowledge and
abilities!
Only a general briefing about a Proficiency Check will be performed by the Examiner.
See respective hints and regulations on the following pages!
Trainees shall prepare the planned aerodrome thoroughly. During the briefing, any possible uncertainties in
the route documentation shall be clarified together with the Examiner.
OPC must be documented on the form provided by the Operator. If no special form is provided, at least the
LAT Training Record shall be completed.
ATO
If the mission is an LPC as well, the official form of the respective Civil Aviation Authority has to be used.
“Respective authority” is the authority, which issues the Trainee’s license!
The lesson plan cosists of 4 parts for every Applicant:
Part 1: Cockpit Preparation / Preparation for his first TKOF
Part 2: Handling of a technical malfunction (on TRE’s discreation)
Part 3: Engine Failure handling, with precision and non precision approach; incl. at least one go-around
Part 4: RH-Seat Check (TKOF with engine failure, non precision approach with GA; precision approach
with full stop landing
On the following pages find some EU-FCL-regulations which deal with a License Proficiency Check.

Test standards (Appendix 1 to FCL 1.425 §2)

• Examiners shall consistently apply EU-FCL standards during a test/check. However, as the
circumstances of each test/check conducted by an examiner may vary, it is also important that an
examiner’s test/check assessment takes into account any adverse condition(s) encountered during the
test/check.
• It is emphasised that test/check applicants should concern themselves only with flying and operating the
aeroplane (FFS) to the best of their ability. Definition of, and compliance with, the Test Standards is the
responsibility of the Examiner.
• Throughout the Proficiency Check compliance with briefing/checklists, procedures, anti-icing and de-icing
precautions, airmanship, ATC liaison and compliance, RT procedures, flight management and MCC will
be assessed.
• Examiners are reminded that applicants may appeal against the conduct of any test/check in accordance
with National regulations.

Purpose of a Proficiency Check (FCL 1.001)

• A Proficiency Check is a demonstration of knowledge and skill for a rating revalidation and may include
such oral examination as the Examiner may determine necessary.

Examiner’s approach (AMC FCL 1.425)

• An examiner should encourage a friendly and relaxed atmosphere to develop both before and during a
Proficiency Check. A negative or hostile approach should not be used. During the test/check flight, the
examiner should avoid negative comments or criticisms and all assessments should be reserved for the
de-briefing.
• The performance of an applicant under test conditions will often be adversely affected by some degree of
nervous tension, but the Examiner can do much to redress the balance in his favour by the adoption of a
friendly and sympathetic attitude. Any suggestion of haste during briefing should be avoided and the
applicant should be encouraged to ask as many questions as he wishes at the conclusion of each
section. Clear and unhurried instructions at this stage will not only serve to put the applicant at his ease,
but will ensure that the Proficiency Check proceeds smoothly and without unnecessary delay.
• Marginal or questionable performance of a test/check item should not influence an examiner’s
assessment of any subsequent items.
• Although Proficiency Checks specify flight test tolerances, an applicant should not be expected to achieve
these at the expense of smoothness or stable flight. An examiner should make due allowance for
unavoidable deviations due to turbulence, ATC instructions, etc.

How the Examiner assesses airmanship (Examiner Guidebook)

• Airmanship is not a single task but is a set of competencies, which must be evident in all tasks, conducted
throughout the practical test standard as applied to a Proficiency Check.
• It is the examiner’s role to observe how the applicant manages the resources available to him to achieve
a safe and uneventful flight. The examiner must be satisfied that the success of the flight was a result of
good airmanship and not good luck.

Briefing
Briefing time: 1:00 hour
Only a generic briefing concerning a Proficiency Check will be given by the Examiner. During the briefing any
open question concerning initial setup and FMS loading shall be clarified.
The briefing should cover the following:
• The objective of the test
• Licensing checks, as necessary (check type of licenses and valid medical)
• Encourage the applicant to ask questions
• Operating procedures to be followed (e.g. operators manual)
• Aims to be identified by applicant
• Simulated weather assumptions (see “environmental setup”)
• Contents of exercise to be performed
• Agreed speed and handling parameters (e.g. V-speeds, bank angle)
• Use of R/T

Debriefing
Debriefing time: on Examiner’s discretion
Actions by Examiner:
• Decide about grading to issue (PASS / PARTIAL PASS / FAIL).
• Give a verbal debriefing to the applicant – and the reason for your grading!
• Basically do not make entries in the Pilot’s License if it is a foreign license!
• Fill in the Proficiency Check Form as provided by the Applicant. If no specific form is provided, the LBA
Proficiency Check Form shall be used.
• As usually make the entries in the Trainee’s Training Record
• Hand over a copy of your TRE-authorization to the applicant
• Copy following documents (Training Record, Proficiency Check Form)
• Original papers remain with the Applicant.
