Patented by its inventor, Paul T. Giguere of West Roxbury,.Mass., the de~ vice literally gives a “hot foot” to ice, inelt~ | ing it down to the pavement in minutes. Whenever he finds himself stuck on ice or snow, Giguere hooks the funnel-shaped de-icer to the tail pipe of his car, starts the» engine and lets the heat melt’ away his troubles. A series of baffles inside the noz- zle forces the hot gases to pass over the ice several times on their way out. The whole thing comes apart to fit in the car trunk. Letter to the Editor Gentlemen: In the September 1950 issue of Popular Mechanics Magazine the article by John Ratcliff discussing the free-piston engine attracted my immediate interest. What I read, I understood. However, there remained two points which were not discussed, namely. the mechanism for fuel injection (including timing) and also the method of starting“ the engine . .. I would like to know how the above functions are accomplished . . . Norman Ehlers, RR.1, Ludlow Falls, Ohio. The engine has a regular diesel-type fuel injector. There is no timing device, since the pistons are self-governed, depending on the rate and amount of fuel injected. There is, however, a pair of rode working off a cam, which keep both pistons working in opposition, so that they do not jly back and forth regardless of each other. The engine is started with compressed air from a tank activated by the starter. On the larger en= gines there is an auxiliary compressor. Boat “Steps” to Mu: Endless possibilities are foreseen for a device developed in England that controls the movements of a boat by musical tones. It operates just like a radio-controlled vessel except that musical notes of varying pitches are sent to it over a certain wave length from the controlling ship. Different notes operate different mechanisms on the launch. One note stops or starts the engines while another controls the steering gear and so on, The music-control boat is a tar- get vessel designed for the R.A.F. and the British say it cannot be jammed like ordi- nary radio controls. But suppose the opera- tor gets confused and puts on “Drifting and Dreaming” instead of “Show Me the Way to Go Home.” POPULAR MECHANICS WHAT ANI Wants to Every Know AUDELS aes a ee GUIDES—(4 Book S: AUDELS PLUMBERS & STEAMFITTERS GUIDES—[4 Book Set) $6 apeein feae ann ny Bet i i - er ae a ie Sees Leet es AbbeLS “OiL Eu es Sue Covering Working Prineptay, Rowtalletinn, Serica af nage Weatine, Wonning & A coding Ser ites Eapiniea Nev Hadcant Weatine, Fly Thatraed & Iodeaet, AUDELS REFRIGERATION & Ps AIR CONDITIONING.
