The Various Uses of Mathematics

Module 1 :
Nature of Mathematics

Math is the study of patterns. It

attempts to put the
occurences in the universe
into equations.

Math has always been a part

of human lives, even if it
cannot be seen by the naked
eye

Module 2 :
Language of Mathematics

In order to represent and

predict the information that it
is trying to uncover,
mathematics uses a variety of
symbols to do this.

As for grouping the data that

was gathered from these
patterns and equations, sets
are used.

Lastly, in order to identify the

reasoning of the patterns
involved, logic is used.

Module 3 :
Problem Solving
Parity is the "oddness/evenness"
of an integer. If given enough
information, even the parity of an
unknown integer can be
determined

Another method in solving

problems is to read it
backwards, since it might give
you another perspective of the
given information

All in all, using your brain and

experience is the key in solving
problems

Module 4 :
Data Management / Statistics

Statistics is basically
collecting and
analyzing data in order
to find patterns within
those samples

It measures a variety of
factors such as central
tendency, dispersion,
and relative position.
Statistics can identify
the system of a data set
which is useful for
many things in real life.

Module 5:
Voting and Apportionment
There are numerous types of voting
systems created for a variety of
situations.
Here are a few advantages and
disadvantages of each system

Type Pros Cons

Plurality Simple, Clear winner Doesn't represent the majority

Sequential Represents majority May take longer compared to others

Borda count A better version of Amount of points per ranking is

Plurality, takes into arbitrary and can be manipulated
consideration rankings

Pairwise Simple, Clear winner Also doesn't represent the majority

Approval Represents majority, Vote count may take longer, human

preference of each voter candidates would be neutral in order
matters to get higher rankings. (e.g. election)

Weighted Represents majority Not all votes are equal,

(depending on power of power of each voter is
each voter) sometimes arbitrary
