Role Play Model

Lesson Title: Healthy Bodies

Targeted Grade Level: 1st grade

Academic Subject: Health Science

Lesson Goals:

Use Role Play to help students learn more about nutrition and exercise which are
two key components of healthy body.

Lesson Objectives:

 Teaching the importance of eating right and staying active in order to


maintain and develop healthy habits throughout life.
 Observe the MyPyramid chart used by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to
show the food groups and how they are divided up.
 Have students categorize foods into certain groups and discern healthier
options.
 Students will focus on how exercise helps the heart, lungs, muscles, and
bones.
 Role play will not only teach the students in a more exciting and engaging
way but also reinforce what is already learned.

Materials/Resources Needed:

 Food chart
 Different food options (this can be real foods such as apples and crackers,
depending on allergy precautions they can be given in class to eat)
 Play foods to help in role play.
 Exercise chart
 Exercise equipment if needed. Students can use their imagination when it
comes to exercise, so equipment is not necessary. Any body movement is a
great exercise.

- Introduce what does a healthy body need?


-Ask students to give their thoughts and ideas on what they think a healthy body
needs to thrive.
-Explore any issues or opinions.
-Time to set up parts.
-Chefs (Nutritionists) and Trainers: A great way to help students learn what helps
keep our bodies healthy is to firsthand feed and train the body.
Divide class into groups, nutritionists, trainers, and the bodies!
As a class after our role play is over, we can as a class write a chart of our top 5
foods and top 5 exercises.
Observing – During role play students will observe how exercise affects them,
listening and feeling their heartbeat

Evaluation:

A short quiz will be given as an evaluation. This will help to identify if any students
did not grasp the lesson. This along with making the chart after the lesson would
give a great insight into if the students grasped the lesson.
