C. Lesson Proper
The function concept is one of the most fundamental concepts of modern
mathematics. There are many approaches to identifying a function and relation.
Then, we have to be careful in dealing with them especially the differences between
these two expressions. Perhaps the most useful idea for modeling the real world is
the concept of function.

1. Motivation
Directions: Identify the X and Y coordinates of each ordered pair.

ORDERED PAIRS X -coordinate Y-coordinate

2. (4,6)
3. (1,3)
4. (-2,0)
5. (-5,-3)
6. (11,-4)
7. (-5,9)

A Relati on is a set of ordered pairs.

Like X and Y - coordinates.

In relation

All of the X -coordinates are called the domain .

All of the Y -coordinates are called the range .

Examples:

Name the domain and range for the following relation:

1. {(-5,3), (4,-6), (8,9), (-3,-7), (-4,8)}

DOMAIN: {-5, -4, -3, 4, 8}

RANGE: {-7, -6, 3, 8, 9}

2. {(-5,-3), (-2,0), (1,3), (4,6), (7,9)}

DOMAIN: {-5, -2, 1, 4, 7}

RANGE: {-3, 0, 3, 6, 9}

3. {(8,-9), (3,2), (7,-2), (-7,4), (9,1)}

DOMAIN: {-7, 3, 7, 8, 9}

RANGE: {-9, -2, 1, 2, 4}

4. {(0,-6), (7,9), (7,-2), (-5,-5), (-5,0)}

DOMAIN: {-5,-5, 0, 7, 7}

RANGE: {-6, -5, -2, 0, 9}

ALWAYS LIST THE DOMAIN AND RANGE IN NU MERICAL ORDER

A Relation can be any kind of relationship between sets of

numbers.

A Function is a relation in which each element of the domain

corresponds to exactly one element of the range.

Examples:

Determine whether the following ordered pairs is FUNCTION OR NOT FUNCTION.

1. {(-5,-3), (-2,0), (1,3), (4,6), (7,9)}

DOMAIN: {-5, -2, 1, 4, 7}

RANGE: {-3, 0, 3, 6, 9}

• In example number one, no x-coordinates (or x-value) is repeated;

hence, the set of ordered pairs is a Function
FUNCTION

2. {(0,-6), (7,9), (7,-2), (-5,-5), (-5,0)}

DOMAIN: {-5,-5, 0, 7, 7}

RANGE: {-6, -5, -2, 0, 9}

In example number two, -5 and 7 are repeated twice hence the set of
ordered pairs is a Not Function
NOT FUNCTION
3. {(0,5), (7,3), (2,4), (8,-5), (7,2)}

DOMAIN: {0, 2, 7, 7, 8}

RANGE: {-5, 2, 3, 4, 5}

• In example number three, 7 is repeated twice hence the set of ordered pairs is a
Not Function
NOT FUNCTION
4. {(-2,-1), (-1,0), (0,-1), (1,2), (2,3)}

DOMAIN: {-2, -1, 0, 1, 2}

RANGE: {-1, -1, 0, 2, 3}

• In example number four, no x-coordinates (or x-value) is repeated; hence,

the set of ordered pairs is a Function,

FUNCTION

To expand the concept of function more, can be express it in arrow diagram.

Examples:

The examples above are FUNCTION because no domains are repeated.

The examples above are NOT FUNCTION because there are values
which are repeated in the domain.

You can easily determine if a relation is a function by graphing it and doing vertical line
test.

Get a pen then your pen is a utensil to identify the graph if it’s function or not function
by passing throughout the graph.

If your pen touches two points of the relation, it’s not a function.

In other words, the vertical line test proves that none of the x-values repeat.

Observe the second and third graph. As you can see, vertical lines are crossing the graphs
and each vertical line touches two points in the graph therefore it’s not function. However,
the first graph is a function because it has only one point that touches the vertical line.

4. Value Integration (situational)

The study of function is not only beneficial in the study of Mathematics and
Sciences but also in our daily life situations. An example of this is the weekly salary is a
function of the hourly pay rate and the number of hours worked.
