C. Lesson Proper
The function concept is one of the most fundamental concepts of modern
mathematics. There are many approaches to identifying a function and relation.
Then, we have to be careful in dealing with them especially the differences between
these two expressions. Perhaps the most useful idea for modeling the real world is
the concept of function.
1. Motivation
Directions: Identify the X and Y coordinates of each ordered pair.
2. Discussion/Lecture

In relation
Examples:
RANGE: {-3, 0, 3, 6, 9}
DOMAIN: {-7, 3, 7, 8, 9}
DOMAIN: {-5,-5, 0, 7, 7}
Examples:
RANGE: {-3, 0, 3, 6, 9}
DOMAIN: {-5,-5, 0, 7, 7}
In example number two, -5 and 7 are repeated twice hence the set of
ordered pairs is a Not Function
NOT FUNCTION
3. {(0,5), (7,3), (2,4), (8,-5), (7,2)}
DOMAIN: {0, 2, 7, 7, 8}

RANGE: {-5, 2, 3, 4, 5}
• In example number three, 7 is repeated twice hence the set of ordered pairs is a
Not Function
NOT FUNCTION
4. {(-2,-1), (-1,0), (0,-1), (1,2), (2,3)}
FUNCTION
Examples:
The examples above are NOT FUNCTION because there are values
which are repeated in the domain.
You can easily determine if a relation is a function by graphing it and doing vertical line
test.
Get a pen then your pen is a utensil to identify the graph if it’s function or not function
by passing throughout the graph.
If your pen touches two points of the relation, it’s not a function.
In other words, the vertical line test proves that none of the x-values repeat.
Examples:

Observe the second and third graph. As you can see, vertical lines are crossing the graphs
and each vertical line touches two points in the graph therefore it’s not function. However,
the first graph is a function because it has only one point that touches the vertical line.

formula for x. values and simplify.

7. How do you read f(x)?
a. f x b. f of x
c. f parenthesis x d. f with an x inside the parenthesis
8. If f(x) = 2x + 1, what would be your first step to find f(1)?
a. Plug a 1 in for all the x's
b. Set the function equal to 1
c. Only plug a 1 into the left side

10. f(x) is the same thing as ______.
a. y b. x
c. input d. an equation
E. Assignment
Directions: Identify the domain, range of each set of ordered pairs, and arrange it in
ascending order. Identify whether each sets of ordered pair is function or not function.
