C. Lesson Proper
Function is like a machine that always makes a product or makes work easier.
Functions always have an input and a possible output that cannot be created
without a process.

1. Motivation
Direction: Complete the table. (Students will be providing the answer when
the teacher called them for recitation)

INPUT Y = 5x+4 OUTPUT ORDERED

2. Discussion/Lecture
We often use letter f, g, or h to represent a function.
We always write y=f(x), y= g(x), y= h(x)

Toevaluate a function, simply replace (substitute) the function’s variable

with the indicated number of expression.

If f is the name of the function, the value of f at x will be f(x).

Examples:

Given:

1. f(x) = 2x - 1

Find: f (2), f (5), and f (-2)

Solution:

a. f(2) = 2(2) -1 b. f(5) = 2(5) -1 c. f(-2) = 2(-2) -1

Answer:

a. f(2) = 3 b. f(5) = 9 c. f(-2) = - 5

3. Activities / Enrichment
Directions: Evaluate the function at the indicated values.

1. f(x) = 2x2 + x + 33
FIND: f(0), f(-1), f(1) and f(10)

a. b. c. d.

2. f(x) = x2 + 4x + 4
FIND: f(-1), f(3), f(-2) and f(2)

a. b. c. d.

4. Value Integration (situational)

The study of function is not only beneficial in the study of Mathematics and
Sciences but also in our daily life situations. An example of this is the weekly salary is a
function of the hourly pay rate and the number of hours worked.
