In this module, you will accomplish experiences to know what communication is and the
process behind it.

EXPERIENCE 1: WHAT IS COMMUNICATION?

EXERCISE: HOW I UNDERSTAND COMMUNICATION

Create a one-minute video presentation that reflects your understanding of what

“communication” is about. Be creative. You have five minutes to finish the task, from planning
to uploading.

Upload your video on Google Drive and share a link of it on Google Classroom for your
Learning Facilitator and classmates to see. Make sure to give anyone from APEC Schools
access to your video. Name your video file following this sample: ORC EM1_How I Understand
Communication_<Last Name, First Name>.

After uploading your video, answer the following questions:

1. How did you effectively communicate your message through the video?
2. Is effective communication important? Why or why not?

LEARN MORE: Read WIKI: Communication to know more about it. After reading the WIKI,
proceed to the Checkpoint below.

CHECKPOINT 1

After completing the exercise and reading the WIKI, tick the column that determines how
often you practice what the statements say. Do this as objectively as possible. Bear in mind
that there are no wrong answers. You can use your performance in the exercise as a basis for
completing this task.

Comment your level of proficiency in the corresponding forum in the Google Classroom.

If you get 7 and below, review the video you have uploaded for the Exercise in this Experience
and identify what your misconceptions were. Review WIKI: Communication, then try to
explain what communication is using your own words in the discussion posted on Google
Classroom.

EXPERIENCE 2: HOW IS COMMUNICATION CARRIED OUT?

EXERCISE: MY FAVORITE MOVIE/TV SCENE

Talk to at least one household member about your favorite movie or TV scene. Before talking
to them, ask their permission to record the short conversation. Be spontaneous while talking
to them, do not prepare any script as you want this exercise to be as natural as possible.
Record the conversation and upload the video on Google Drive without editing it. You are
expected to upload a 1-minute video at the very least. Share a link to it on Google Classroom
for your Learning Facilitator and classmates to see. Make sure to give anyone from APEC
Schools access to your video. Name your file following this sample: ORC EM1_My Favorite
Movie/TV Scene_<Last Name, First Name>.

After having the conversation and submitting the link to the Google Classroom, answer the
following questions posted on Google Classroom:
1. How did you carry out the conversation?
2. How did the person you are talking to respond to you?
3. What are the processes needed for communication to happen?
4. Did you think you were able to have effective communication? Explain your answer.

LEARN MORE: Learn how communication is carried out by reading the WIKI: Nature and
Process of Communication. After reading the WIKI, go to the checkpoint.

CHECKPOINT 2

After having a conversation with a household member and reading the WIKI, you are now
ready to have effective communication with someone outside your home. Nowadays, we
don’t have the luxury of seeing each other in person. The only way that we can talk to
someone outside our vicinity is through technology, using whatever applications are available
to us.

Talk to a friend or even an acquaintance from your class about the things that you both do
during your free time. Make sure to apply the things that you have learned in this experience.

If you feel that you weren’t able to have effective communication with that friend, identify
what went wrong in your conversation and try to correct these mistakes by talking to a
different friend.

Answer the following question in the Google Classroom after having your conversation.
1. How were you able to show each of the 3 natures of communication in your
conversation?
2. Which of the elements of the communication process were present and describe the
role that each element played in the conversation?

REFLECTION

Communication may take many forms. These are just a few examples of how humans
communicate their thoughts, feelings, ideas, and insights, ranging from simple head-nodding,
stretching of hands, and raising of eyebrows to daily phone conversations with friends,
constant exchange of text messages, and regular browsing of social networking sites. These
