Communication is defined as
sharing and receiving messages to
achieve understanding. It is a
process of using words, sign, or
behaviors to express ideas,
thought, and feeling to someone.
It is derived from the Latin word
communis, which means to
impart, to convey, to transmit, or
to share.
According to Sipacio and Balgos (2016)

THERE ARE NINE ELEMENTS OF

COMMUNICATION
1. Speaker – is the source of information or
message.
2. Message – consists the information, ideas, or
thoughts conveyed by the speaker in action or in
words.
3. Encoding – is the process of converting the
message into words, actions, or other forms of
that the speakers understand.
4. Channel – refers to the medium or the means
such as personal or non- personal, verbal or non-
verbal, in which the encoded message is
conveyed.
5. Decoding – is the process of interpreting the
encoded message of the speaker by the receiver.
6. Receiver – is someone who decodes the message, also known as the
recipient of the message.

7. Feedback – is the reply, reaction, or response of the receiver to the

interpreted message of the speaker.

8. Context/ Situation – is the environment where the communication

takes place.

9. Barriers – are the factors that affect the flow of communication.

There are five basic Functions of Communication

1. CONTROL - if communication aims to regulate

behavior or action.

For example, a policeman approaches and orders you to

wear the face mask and shield properly when he sees you
across the street.

- Here, there is an order given by an authority that you need

to follow. With the policeman’s message, you are being
regulated or controlled by wearing the face mask and shield
correctly.
2. SOCIAL INTERACTION
- this allows you to interact with
others. Having a conversation with
friends or family members just sharing
stories or catching up with one’s life is
an example of this function.
.

3. MOTIVATION - there are people who are

effective in giving advices. They motivate others to be
better and inspire hopeless people.
.

4. INFORMATION DISSEMINATION
- this permits you to give announcements, to deliver
reports, and to share information. Any media, person,
organization, or groups of people that provide
information are using this function of communication.
5. EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION - when expression
of feelings is present in the conversation.
Common Barriers in Communication
- Communication may sometimes fail or not be effective because of some barriers. The
table presents common barriers that affect communication process and possible
solutions.

Consolidated Test
Effective communication has always been the key to all
healthy relationships. But because of the COVID-19, many
individuals are working from home with little to no face-to-
face interaction with others. This pandemic really affects
our day-to-day life not only in terms of health, economy but
also our social life. As a student, how COVID-19 pandemic
changed the way you communicate? Is it possible that we
can still apply the functions of communication during this
time? Do you think communication plays a vital role in
today’s situation? Justify your answer.
