BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS:

What is MAC?

MAC OS is an operating system designed by Apple. This operating system is already installed to
all new Macintosh computer. There are different version of this operating system like OS X (O-S 10), El
Capitan (2015), Yosemite (2014), Mavericks (2013), Mountain Lion (2012), and Lion (2011). Apple
computers are expensive that is why it only has about 16% of users unlike Windows operating system
(80% of users) this is according to Stat Counter Global Stats- https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-
share/desktop/worldwide.
Steps on how to do fresh installation of MAC operating system

1. Download a copy of MAC OS installer

2. Save it to a formatted USB Flashdrive
3. Connect the USB Flashdrive to the MAC computer you wish to install
4. Restart your MAC computer (press and hold the option key while restarting)
5. Start Manager will come up
6. Select the option to install the OS from external drive
7. Select Disk Utility
8. Select your Mac's start up disc (Macintosh HD or Home) the Click Erase
9. Your startup disk will then be formatted
10. After formatting the startup disk, go to main Utilities Menu and choose install MAC OS
11. Choose your preferred location to install macOS.

*Note: Make a backup of your file first before doing fresh or clean installation.
How to format USB flashdrive in MAC Computer:

1. Insert your USB Flashdrive

2. Go to Application the select Utilities
3. Click/ Open the Disk Utility
4. Select the drive of your USB flashdrive then click Erase (rename the name of the disk to
“Untitled”)
5. It will be asking for format type, select Mac OS Extended
6. Choose GUID Partition Map from the Scheme options
7. Click Erase
8. Disk Utility will create the partition and the drive will be set up (it will take a while).
9. Click Done.

What is LINUX?
According to javatpoint.com, a student at the University of Helsinki in Finland, Linus Torvalds, wish to
have a free version of UNIX and started to writing its own code in 1991. After a while, this project
became the Linux kernel. Linus Torvalds wanted to use Unix 386 Intel computer but is unable to afford it,
so he wrote this program specially for his own computer using GNU C compiler in MINIX. GNU C
compiler and Intel C compiler are used to compile Linux code.

This project of Linus Torvalds started for fun but came up with such a big project. At first, he wanted to
call this as “Freax” however, it became “Linux”.

Linux kernel is published under Linus Torvalds’ licensed and is restricted for commercial use. He
released the kernel under GNU General Public License in 1992.

Today, home appliances like washing machines, DVD players, router and modem, refrigerators, cars,
supercomputers, web servers and others use Linux operating system.

Steps on how to install LINUX operating system:

1. Create a bootable CD or DVD and insert to computer

2. Turn on the computer and the boot screen will appear, press the “Enter” key

3. The next screen will appear. Choose “Skip” by pressing “Tab” key then press “Enter” key

4. Click the “Next” button when the Welcome Screen appears

5. Choose your preferred language, click “Next” button

6. Click “Next” button to allow the installer to partition the disk automatically

7. “Warning” dialogue box will appear, click “Yes”

8. Choose your preferred setting on how the installer automatically partition the disk, click “Next”

9. Another “Warning” dialogue box will appear, click “Yes”

10. The next screen will show you the default partitioning scheme for your size disk.
11. Set the “/boot” partition to “150M”, choose “Fixed size”, and hit “Ok” then “Next”

12. The “/root” and “/swap” partitions is part of volume group

13. Now, set the “/root” partition to “Fill to maximum allowable size” and “Force to be primary
partition” then hit “Ok”

14. Now, let’s move to “/swap” partition, set it to “2048M” and choose “Fixed size”, then hit “Ok”

15. The next screen will appear, hit “next”

16. Click “Next” to accept the boot loader setting

17. The next screen will let you setup the network interface. However, it can be done automatically by
selecting DHCP

18. The next step is to setup the firewall and Secure Linux Configuration. But you can just select “No
Firewall” then hit “Next”

19. If you select “No firewall”, there will “Warning” dialogue box. You can just ignore it and click
“Proceed”
20. Choose your preferred language support, then click “Next”

21. Setup your Time zone

22. Set up your root password for the server

23. Choose your preferred package groups for your installation, hit “Next”
24. “About to Install” screen will appear, hit “Next”

25. “Required Install Media” dialogue box will appear, just hit “Next”
26. Insert the Installer (CD/DVD) as requested
27. Click “Reboot” to complete the installation process

28. Click “Next” on the “Welcome” screen

29. Click to Accept the License Agreement then hit “Next”
30. Setup Date and Time, hit “Next”
31. Display screen will appear and will allow to set it up by choosing the model of your monitor and
choosing the right screen resolution, hit “Next”

32. Setup your user account

33. Click next on the “Additional CDs” Screen

 34. Click “Next” on the “Finish Setup” screen

35. The system will restart

36. Once restarted, enter your login credentials

37. You are now ready to use the computer with Linux OS
