Quick Workshop 1: Conduction (Fourier’s Law)

ANSYS Mechanical Heat Transfer

1 © 2016 ANSYS, Inc. July 14, 2016

Overview

• Goal
– Understanding the Fourier’s Law and how it is applied by the ANSYS solver for
modeling the conduction

• Model Description
– The model is a simple cubic block with two applied temperatures at each end

– The results obtained with ANSYS will be compared with a hand calculation

Boundary Conditions

Apply a temperature of 20°C to the + Y axis face

Apply a temperature of 120°C to the opposite side face

Solve the Model

Comparison with hand calculation

After evaluating all the results, the heat balance is equal to zero and the heat transiting
the structure is equal to 1210 𝑾

We will do the hand calculation using the same inputs:

Recall the equations in slide 11 of the Module 01
T L
• A=1 𝒎𝟐 q Where, Rth 
Rthcond cond
KL  A
• L=5𝒎
• K L = 60.5 𝑾. 𝒎−𝟏 . 𝑲−𝟏 (Structural Steel  look in the Engineering Data)
Rthcond is then equal to: 0.082645 𝑾. 𝒎−𝟏 . Given T equal to 100 𝑲 which gives q = 1210 𝑾

Go further

Suppress the second applied temperature and its Reaction Probe

Apply a Heat flow of 1210 𝑾 at the surface of the suppressed boundary condition
Solve the Model and comment the results
