Competencies: Explain the advantage of high biodiversity in maintaining the stability of an ecosystem
(S8LT-lVh-21). Describe the transfer of energy through the trophic levels (S8LT-lVi-22)
I. Direction: Study the illustration below and answer the questions that follow. Write the
LETTER of the best answer.
1. In the energy pyramid, what happens to the energy transferred from one trophic level to another?
A. increases due to metabolic processes as heat.
B. remains the same lessens due to metabolic processes as heat.
C. decreases or lessens due to metabolic processes as heat.
D. may fluctuate due to metabolic processes as heat.
2. What will happen to the the biological system if solar energy will be lost?
A. will become rocks C. will turn into water
B. will turn into dust D. will collapse

4. Energy pyramid represents the amount of energy transferred from one organism to another. From
the standpoint of food sources and health, what does the base part of the energy pyramid imply?
A. eating mostly plants C. eating mostly larger animals
B. eating mostly smaller animals D. eating animals regardless of size
5. Light energy that enters the biological system is transformed into _____ in organic molecules
through the process of photosynthesis
A. chemical energy B. light energy C. Mechanical energy D. sound energy
6. Energy content at each higher level of the food chain decreases. Only10% of energy is made
available to the next level. Which of the following justify this situation?
A. Some parts of the food( e.g. roots, leaves , trunk, bones, feathers etc) aren’t eaten by
organisms
so not all energy are taken in.
B. Lots of energy taken in is used by that organism for staying alive (e.g. respiration)
C. Most energy is eventually lost to the surrounding as heat.
D. All of the above
A. consists of all organisms that have the same mode of nutrition and the same number of
feeding levels away from the original source of energy.
B. consists of all organisms that do not have the same mode of nutrition and the same number
of feeding levels away from the original source of energy.
C. consists of all organisms that have the same mode of nutrition and different number of
feeding levels away from the original source of energy.
D. consists of all organisms that do not have the same mode of nutrition and different number of
feeding levels away from the original source of energy.
12. What would happen if the second order consumer will disappear?
A. Food shortage may occur. C. organisms will migrate in search for food
13. What would happen to a food pyramid if the producers were eliminated?
A. All the living organisms in the food pyramid can procreate more offspring.
B. More energy will enter the food pyramid
C. No way for energy to enter the food pyramid

II.DIRECTION: Choose from the box below the statement/s that explains the advantage of high
biodiversity in maintaining the stability of an ecosystem. Write the LETTER of the best answer. (5
points).
Commercial exploitation and population growth (including lifestyle and consumption patterns) and the
introduction of invasive alien species are the reasons of high biodiversity.
Watershed with adequate forest cover provides water that supports lowland agriculture, prevents soil
erosion and siltation of coasts and water bodies, and sustains the supply of surface and groundwater for
domestic use.
Rainforest with highest biodiversity provides shelter, water and food to several species which will
survive Drought or disasters also as competition with other species.
Loss of biodiversity in the agricultural ecosystem is a direct consequence of habitat destruction via
Conversion of agricultural land to other uses; the possible negative impacts of biotechnology.
The forest ecosystem provides ecological services that benefit agriculture, industries, water and
power needs.
High biodiversity is vital to ecosystem because it increase ecosystem productivity where each
species, regardless of how small, all have a crucial role to play.
